I haven't tried step challenges yet. What counts as a "step"? Will opening a portal under yourself to spit you out somewhere else without hitting a movement key count as a step?

Any lateral movement count as a step, and they go up pretty fast (1 per second or something). Sliding over a ledge (of your portal) count as a step too, and moving out of a portal usually count for 2 step.

Yes, opening portal under your feet is the way to go, but even then, getting gold modal is really hard (didnt manage to get any). It's just frustrating, because you constantly have to reload to get the part perfectly

Yeah, they are ridiculously hard. I've only managed to get the first one.

What's really great is if you land on top of a box. Your step counter flies up and you have to start over.

Also, apparently using flings or loops to bypass platforms is considered cheating for the challenge maps. You don't get credit for it. Sucks.

Just bought orange box last night and I only bought it for portal rreally.

Truly amazing game, short but who fk'n cares, I don't think Valve realize the monster of a fanbase they made with portal, fingers crossed to a sequel (a long one!).

I'm in love with how fluid it is to just jump through portals and how awesome the levels are :D

I'm more in love with the voice acting / humorous tone of the game, shit is hilarious.

I'm a fan of the whole half-life series ever since the first one came out, and Portal just makes it so much better. I like how Portal isn't just a minigame but is also tied into the Half Life storyline as well. It seems highly likely given the events in episode 2 that you will get to use the portal gun in episode 3... would be so awesome

For those of you who haven't touched Half Life 2.. please do so. If you loved Portal you will definitely love Half Life. It's full of just as interesting, innovative puzzles and humor as Portal. I remember seeing the Portal trailer two years ago and waiting for it since. Valve planned on releasing it for free at first when you bought Half Life Ep 2, but now they threw together one package made of complete win. I really hope they have a lot more plans up their sleeves.

I didn't want to necro bump this thread, but I beat the game on Friday, in one sitting. In spite of the shortness of it, the ending song really made it all feel so complete. I wasn't expecting that. I'm going to start plugging away at the challenges soon. I keep looking everywhere to try and find a companion cube plushie or something. ; ; Such a fantastic game.

Even at my birthday party on Tuesday, as some of us would be playing Halo & such, people would rotate to the PC to play Portal. And then no one wanted to leave. lol

Old topic, I know. Game was awesome and no you don't need shit to play this, just turn the graphics/res down and you can play it fine. I seriously put it on this machine and it ran fine minus some slowdown after the mini-loads it does...

CPU: 800mhz Celeron (yes, 800)
GPU: Radeon 9250
RAM: 256mb

Probably ran it around 20fps average @640x480 with nothing special on, medium settings mostly. So lol@people with machines 32394879x's better that can't run it.

I finally played and beat portal today (story mode). No challenges. Just had to share the awesomeness of my accomplishment 3 years in the making.
