i've seen that happen a few times in nashmau to certain fisherman who may or may not want to admit they are botting. I will generally say something jerkish like "Damn, i'd hate to waste all that free gil when there is a NPC right over there". Then usually after a dozen or so repeats, they "wake up" (aka return to their PC) and then run to the NPC and clear inventory. I have reported people like this in the past, when I see it happen over and over and over, and funny enough, those people seem to not be on the server anymore.

Maybe not the right place to ask, but I always assumed fish botting wasn't detectable since it seems like a lot of people do it (ie. there's still a ton of sushi on AH). I have no idea how it works though. Does it only move the rod for you or actually instantly reduce Fish energy to 0 (vaguely remember reading something like this)? If that's the case the main way you could tell someone was cheating would be reeling in fish too fast, right?

I don't bot, so I have no idea how the existing ones actually work. But speaking as a programmer, if I was going to write a fish bot, I would figure out where in memory the game stores a value to indicate which direction the rod is pulling, as well as the location of the fish's "HP". That is, for the direction, there has to be some section of memory you can read to see whether it's left/right/middle. Then I'd just send the corresponding right/left key-hold whenever it changed, and have it press enter when the HP hit zero. Now you have a perfect fisherman with instant reflexes, that never makes a mistake. That'll pull up fish plenty fast, no need to do something blatant like reduce the fish's HP instantly.

As for urat, that's hilarious. Probably fell asleep while botting or something.

I was looking into Sole to skill and make money and I was wondering if anyone had some input on the bite rates in the various zones. I tried Port Jeuno like a month ago and after some absurd time I didn't even have 100 fish so I got really frustrated and stopped and went back to Pterygotus.

From some research I've found other than Sole you can catch w/ Sinking Minnow:
Sauro - 4 items
Batallia - 1 item and Jellyfish (rarely, it says)
Lower Jeuno - 4 items and Jellyfish (rarely)
Beauc - 4 items
Qufim - 3-5 items, depending where you fish

Is Batallia actually a good place to fish Sole? Would it be better/faster to go to Talacca and cancel the Ahatapots/Mercs? I would rather single out Sole if I can to maximize opportunities for skill ups.

He deserves to get caught just for using a horrible bot. lol. It's very easy to find the memory values for current and max inventory space. If you have the programming knowledge on how to make a bot then you should very well be able to program one that stops fishing when you've maxed out your inventory.

I'm seen two kinds of fish bots out there. All of the fishing minigame is played client-side, so in theory you can pull the fish out almost immediately (which appears to be what Urat was doing... STUPID).

1 type of bot just waits X amount of seconds and then pulls the fish up. It's assumed people set the # to be something that looks like a legit fisherman and since you're the only one who can see the HP (which never goes down) of the fish, it just looks normal.

The other type does what was listed above. It actually fights the fish, presumably by reading clientside memory and pushing the correct direction. When it hits 0 it pulls it up.

I'm really not sure much more than the programming standpoint on those, so I can't tell you which one is "better" or whatever, all I can say is they're both "botting" and equally likely to get you banned.

I had a friend fishbot every day from 8am to 5pm while he was at work, and often over night. He never got banned, and he made so much gil. He always told me how he did it (he used the first bot type) and set it to a delay that looked totally legit, so it was less likely to arouse any suspicion.

THAT BEING SAID (I'm a believer that knowledge is power, so I'll fill people in with anything I've seen/read and I encourage everyone else to do the same) there has been a lot of discussion about Aikar making a fishing plugin for windower and pros/cons.

I had considered making one myself, that showed what fish was on the line when you were fishing (this info is also stored clientside) but I'm worried that people would use it to be lazy instead of knowledgeable. I can guess 90% of the time or more what is on my line but other people would just use it to fish up Manta or something... I don't know...

At this point I'm ranting. If anyone has questions about the programming standpoint, I'll try and fill you in as best I know.

But as always, botting = bad. If you're a smart person, and really curious, I encourage you to download a few, see how their UI works.. educate yourself. But keep in mind it's entirely illegal and possibly immoral, and besides..

I imagine a majority of the reports of how many fish people turned in for ebisu are not typical (well, maybe not a majority, but definitely not a normal distribution). Either people report their results when they have amazing luck, or they report their results when they have absolutely terrible luck.

Looking at those numbers you gave, I'd say you're still on par. Wiki gives about a 1% chance on Liks, .5% on gugrus, but again, a lot of those stats might be from atypical experiences.

Can vouch for the "pull fish instantly" up part.

My FFXI had a glitch when they first added the mini-game and my patch update botched up. My rod would move by itself without me doing anything and fish health would go down. Of course it goes down faster if I actually play the mini-game.

However since the glitch also affected other parts of the game making it almost intolerable, I re-installed the game and fixed it.

So i got my signboard today (Woooooooooooooooooooooooooot!!) and i am going to go mess around w/ some gugrus to see if it makes them any easier.

My question/Concern is that i keep hearing water energy in mog house boosts the depletion effect, but i see no real evidence to back it up. Can anyone actually confirm that it helps or is it just speculation? I may be willing to give it a test if it isn't too expensive.
