Gugrus on Carbuncle stopped selling altogether a few days ago, though there are still 28 up at the moment, going for 30k each. I think the initial rush to get the "new and improved Ebisu© Fishing Rod" has died off, so hopefully they'll fall back down to 20k, maybe even 15k.

I have a little bit of gil left on me after my last gugru buying frenzy, but I'm starting to invest in getting another penguin ring. I have 108 marlin on me so far, and I'm stocking up on Sliced Bluetail to go for that final push. Once I get that second ring (and maybe even a 3rd, if I'm lucky), I'm finally going to start fishing gugrus up myself.

The only thing that's slowing me down is that I feel obligated to use the Pirate's Charts every time I get them, and damned if I don't keep on getting them after one or a few trades...I could keep on trading marlin for a Brigand's Chart while holding onto the Pirate's Chart, but that kind of feels wasteful D: Though getting a 3.5 million gil item from the Pirate's Chart fight could buy a lot of gugrus...

Well its taking me about 2 stacks of bait to reel one in, that's without apron mind you, so roughly 1 1/2 stacks of bait to catch a 25K matsya.

It takes me about 5 cherax to get a pugil, since cherax are wayyyy easier to catch than zombies. Thats about 90 cherax to get 1 1/2 stacks of bait.

Each cherax zaldons for 800 gil, so thats 72,000 gil right there, but you also lose out on 72,000 gil since cave cherax NPCs for double the price of zaldon reward.

So to catch 1 matsya you can npc for 25K, thats roughly 100 and some K, oposed to npcing all 90 cherax for over 140K.

Catching a matsya roughly makes you lose out on 40K =/

It's not that bad. I had 3 pieces of bait today, it was taking up space so I fished for Matsya. I got 2 bites, 1 line break, caught the other. I think I have 7 of those on mule somewhere. I don't fish for those much, I only do when I get rare/ex bait from Pirate's chart.

Ended up equipping myself and two others with Brigand's Charts, and had 112 marlin on me.

1st chart: 4 items, no mob

2nd chart: 3 items, 1 pugil (Held the pugil from this point onward)

3rd chart: ring (4th chest)

Then I kept warping back to Selbina to turn in more marlin for more charts...

Charts 4, 5, 6, and 7 all dropped rings as well (all 4th chest).

I ended up keeping three of them (I have 4 now), and giving two to one of the fellows who helped me (He has lik item as well, and is without gugru item, so it at least gives him the ability to start going after gugrus himself when he wants to!).

One thing to note: The BLM was complaining that after a while (like, probably an hour or so), the Pugil became resistant to sleep. While zoning the pugil does reset the strength of the pugil still, the sleep resistance stayed on there. The other guy was a WHM, and his sleep stuck just fine when the BLM was having trouble, but after a while, the WHM too was having trouble sleeping it. It wasn't hitting very hard, though, only 10-15.

So! I suppose I should start fishing gugrus for myself, now! I'm hoping 4 rings is enough (240 hours of enchantment!), but if I come into some terrible luck, I at least know that the rings aren't as hard to come by as I thought they were. Just have to get a few charts ready beforehand, make sure to hold the pugil, and maybe have a bit of luck.

What strategies do you guys use for the Pirates/Brigands Chart Quests?

I have an alt account with 75WHM 75BRD 38BLM 37NIN 37SMN 28BLU to help with the either quest.

I was looking at wiki and it says the Pirates Chart is an easy duo with 2 SMN. Wondering how to go about duoing this. (When to use astral flow, how the fight is going to go etc)

there is no strategy for brigand chart

its luck base, and only thing u can do is enhance your luck further, by not having pugil more than 1 time whenever you try

what nibu said is correct. USUALLY first chart is used to lure the pugil out, if it dont pop, well good for you if you only have 1 chart 0 marlins. If it pop, no big deal thats part of the plan, YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 100 MARLINS READY IN YOUR BAG IF YOUR SERIOUS ABT A PENGUIN.........get a friend, alt ID etc, hold the pugil and run to selbina get more charts > come back do the BC, this time no more pugils on hook andf you can safely open 4 box for the rest of your marlins. Getting a ring is almost 50% if you can open the 4th box. people usually fail because of having just 1 chart, no marlins and then popped the damn pugil, ruining the entire day. So yea, get 1 chart and standby 100 marlins at least. pugil will rage usually when your fighting your 4th chart. i didnt have that much marlin to go for 5th solo O_O how u get 7 charts nibu!!!?!???

pirate chart? 3x SMN sync and all judgement bolt/diamond dust the Sahagin for 100% win. 2 SMN is shaky unless you are prepared to do a longer and troublesome fight. for 2 smn to kill all 3 fish at a go, you need thunder day or ice day. and hope the 10% bonus proc on both diamond dust to ensure the sahagin die. Sahagin have slightly more HP than crab and kraken. usually 2 flow will kill kraken and crab, leaving sahagin with 2-4% HP, mishandling this stage with 2 SMN can be lethal because it can kill ramuh and u almost instantly.

However if u still insist to trying with 2 SMN, here goes........Same opening tactic for 3 SMNs, but this time you only have 2 flow. on your main ID, prepare a ether. after 2 flow went, if the sahagin dont die(also possible that either 1 of kraken and crab dont die due to resist, hell even 3 is possible if you mad unlucky with resist), just leave your alt there to buy time and die its ok, 200xp no biggie, while your main character run back to selbina route. after you think your far enough, pop the ether, and summon ramuh. carry on running until BP is rdy and stay until sahagin and gang come (100 fist should end) and judgement bolt again.

to nibu: 1 penguin = 1 ride = 2 gugs average for lushang

so 180 x 4 ring x 2 fish per charge = bound to get a gugs unless your damn unlucky O_O

just burn them all, dont be shy, because after u get ebisu, minor "penguin ring effects" are perma on ebisu and is good enough to reel gugs in w/o ring XD
