Went from level 7.7 to 11 last night in West Ronfare. Slow start, but I think I'm starting to like fishing more and more.

I've been using the carp guide because I'm going for a Lu Shangs, would it be better to go with something else? I see someone mentioned the Jungles was pretty horrible on bite rates compared to other areas.

I swear we've posted this 100 times in here, but whatever. Another path recommended is to say screw moats and fish Nebs from 0-27. Take all the gil you made from that and buy a Lu at 27 then goto town in Nash until 90+.

Is Nash really the best place to fish in the early 40s? I realize that it's nice to be able to NPC everything, but I can target profit fish on the Selbina/Mhura ferry that sell for much higher prices on the AH compared to NPC prices for the Nash fish, and I still seem to be getting decent skillups. As long as I cancel all !!! fish I can avoid rod breaks, and my line breaks have been minimal (and cheap at only 300 gil a pop).

Has anyone done Nash and Selbina/Mhura Ferry and noticed any difference in skillups or bite rates? At the moment, my main reason for not going to Nash is I didn't feel like running there everytime I wanted to fish (I should have bought that damn pendant way back...) and I wasn't sure how the rod break / line break situation was there. I would really hate to lose 10K a pop for each rig every time my line breaks on something there (assuming it can break even on a complete stamina depletion).

As usual I can not account for non-Lu. I began in Nash at 27 with Lu and never lost a rig, lsmate of mine began in Nash at 7 with Lu and don't think he ever lost a rig. I had also tested fishing skill 0 in nash with about 5 casts and didn't have a line break. I know the line break is crappy sub 20 with Halcyon but sort of assume it's better 27+? It all depends on your personal goal, my goal was to zerg to 78 ding into ebisu, zerg to 90, then fish lik/gugs 90-100 making a killing. If your goal is slow and steady skill ups with more gil than ya nebs is definitely the way for you.

As for getting to nash, I prefer Ilrusi Staging point > escape > run north to Nash. Lsmates who aren't constantly on blm prefer Nyzul Isle path.

So, I guess a reasonable approach is to stick with Ferry fishing until I'm done funding my Lu, and then move to Nash. Seems reasonable. I've gotten 5 levels of fishing in 3 days on the Ferry, fishing about 2-3 hours a day, so it's not too bad. I started at 35 fishing (quit way beck before the minigame patch) and have just recently gotten back into it. Now that I can reliably land all the ! fish I get, the profit margin has improved quite a bit. As an additional benefit, I get to see the occasional traveler get raped by the Sea Horror from time to time.

I also have cooking 100+ on my main, and didn't want to lose it for woodworking, so repairing my Lu once I get it would slow things down. I'm pretty patient, so I was probably going to take a more laid back approach.

Edit: The Ilrusi Staging point > escape idea works perfect for me, since I'm usually fishing on RDM/BLM for 'super-sneak', and warp anyways.

If you fish daily in Nash, just set your homepoint there. It's not as inconvenient as you'd think.. Just go about your day and when you're all done a simple Warp and you're ready to fish again.

Did I mention Nash has a tenshodo NPC that sells sushi mats =p. Mercs = bream sushi and dils from talacca = sole sushi. That's another reason I rushed to 53+.

I'm too lazy to look everything up again, but you start fishing those at 53+? Fair enough, means I need to get my Lu by 53. >_>

Ganked this from my little guide, hope it helps

    Stage 1: Istiridye
    Fishing Levels: 0-53
    Area: Nashmau
    Bait: Robber Rig
Notes: These are incredibly easy to reel in and stack. If you are a bit patient they will sell on the AH for 7k a stack, or find a high level bonecrafter who synths them into black pearls and sell to them directly for a negotiable price. They also NPC for 300ish gil. I made 70k my first day just NPCing these while racking in a couple fishing skill levels from 30-33ish. I eventually dboxed them to a high level bone friend for 5k a stack.

    Stage 2: Mercanbaligi & Ahtapot
    Fishing Levels: 53-86
    Area: Nashmau
    Bait: Shrimp Lure
Additional Location: Talacca Cove, W exit of Nashmau through Caederva Mire near Einherjar entrance.
Notes: A friend prefers Talacca Cove, the difference is in Talacca you will also fish up Dil's which you will not in Nashmau. NPC rates seem to vary on these from about 600g on Mercs to 700gish on Ahtapots. Mercs are the Eastern equivalent of Bastore Breams and Ahtapots are the Eastern equivalents of Grimmonites. Dil's npc for almost 800g each and are the eastern version of black sole which cap at 96.

can you imagine sea zombie only on pirate rides? and how many pirate u gotta see a day? + how many sea zombie u can get, and gut them?

prolly 10 drill calamries per day max

that extra 20 sec to reel in gugs is not worth your trouble

penguin + albatross is the best you can go, to get gugs at a reliable rate

i havent met anyone who really made full use of the mooching key item yet. those baits are just too rare compare to 15 stacks of meatballs u can get from NPC

if you got all items, try changing like 5 fishing belts, and then switch to crafting guild for skill items ^^

im done after signboard. fishing hole map not worth my time too

i need some woodworking apron and gloves
Ah I see. Guess I'll grab some belts (and I got the Fishing Hole Map, so I have all 3 fishing items with Overhelming Water Aura~)Yea I fished Sea Zombies and Cherax for 2 months or so and eneded up with those 8 Calamary and 6 Pugil. I agree Mooching sucks.

Since you don't have Lu Seraph... for Istiridye, you'll want to use Halycon Fishing Rod. For Mercanbaligi, use Mithran Fishing Rod. (Mithran is how old school people without Lu did Breams in SSG, canceling Grims as they could break the rod at the time.) You can do the same here, til you can afford Lu. If there are no Broken Mithran Rods on the AH, fish Ahtapots as well to break your rod, then sell it for 3-4x the rod amount, buy another and keep going lol.

    I really wish I knew all this lvling up, but I had a Lu anyways lol. >.>;

    Also ding 94!

Well, from my experience, the Jungle's bite rate wasn't the issue. The issue was that Forest Carp (think that is the right one, anyway, maybe Gold Carp, idk) were about 1/10 of the bites for me, which at the time was all I could skill up from. The rest were Moat Carp which was good too, and I did see that someone in this thread said, "Fish for profit, the skilling is bonus" or something, but to me catching 9/10 fish that couldn't skill me up just didn't seem productive.

Nebimonites, however, are just awesome. I'd definitely go this route if I were you.

I actually found the skillup rate was friggin insane after 11 on greedies in Selbina. There's an npc at the far corner of the water selling the lugworm bait, and you can sell the greedies right back to him.

Capped out on them in one sitting, was the craziest skillup session in fishing I've ever had, and have yet to come close to it again since.

In retrospect, I think at that point was when I became addicted. Selbina music is just awesome :3

Here are my top 3 ways to prevent burning out in fishing by the 50s:

#1, big fishing rule of thumb we all swear by, do NOT fish for skillups. Ever. fish for profit/goal (like moats for lu shangs or legendaries for zaldon items, etc), no skillups. Let the skillups come as nice little surprises whilst making money. You'll find fishing becomes less of a chore and more enjoyable.

#2, fish with a friend, or a group if you can manage. You have no idea how much more fun fishing gets if your sitting and chatting it up with your fishing buddies, random "A !@#$ I snapped my line," or "Whoot .3 skillup!" And "ding, lv 10!" "Grats dude!" make it so much better. Really livens up the grind and turns this long dull task into something you can actually look forward to. I know I staticed fishing from 1 to 30 with an old friend of mine. Sadly he quit awhile ago D:

#3, don't sit and fish in the same spot. As much and nice as nashmau is and how you cna get to 100 from lv 20 there, I'd strongly recomend against it. You'll fidn yourself burnt out by the time you hit mercanbaligis and just wont have the strength for the ahtapots. Instead, do a change in scenery every 5 levels, try fishing in new places.

Here are my top favourite fishing spots. Some not very conventional with low skillups, but beautiful, or nice music, or both.

First place: The manaclipper. The soft music with the wind blowing through your characters hair, sailing over the reefs full of fish below, and even the occasional dolphin jumping through the air just within arms reach, the manaclipper is by far my number on top fishing spot. Try it sometime!

Second: Selbina, As I said before, at the low level it is, the skillups are very fast and the music one of my favourite tracks in the game. Anotehr good spot to hang out with a whole group of fishers!

Third: Vunkerl Inlet, specificly the farthest north bridge. There is no music, but the area holds quite possibly the most breathtaking ffxi SS I've ever shot, you overlooking a long winding river slowly sliding down through vanadiel. A wonderful spot to just sit and take it in.

Fourth: I'm sure we all agree lureimuiuiemuwhatever lagoon is a great spot to fish. The tavnazia theme is a very peaceful and quite song, careful you don't fall asleep to it though. If you look very carefully you can even see ducks swimming in the water! Every fishermen worth his or her salt has fished here for the legendary lik, which one needs to obtain the great ebisu. Not only that, but theres quite the spectacle to behold every day at a certain time.

I know the first time I saw it I nearly pissed myself cause I wasn't ready :3

Finally, last but not least, The kings fountain in quicksand caves. Here most people skillup the last high 90 stretch of fishing, mostly 99-100, on cave cherax, as it is the one and only thing you hook here. In this tiny little underground oasis you can see the roots of a giant tree dripping water into a crystal clear pond. Everything is silent, not even a flicker of movement around you. Quite posssibly the most serene and peaceful spot in all of vanadiel.

Other fishing spots I'd recomend to check out that are just cool, lets call em honorable mentions:

    Most creepy:

Carpenter's landing: Theres a tiny hard to find pond out in the middle of nowhere I stumbled upon while skilling up. I honestly can't even remember where I found it, but it does have the look of somewhere with something special about it. The sky darkens when you walk in and you can see the eyes of owls peering out from the trees at you. Definitly rated the #1 creepy spot in all of vanadiel, I'll hunt it down again sometime and put up some SSs for you guys

    Most Beautiful

Purgonogo Island takes the cake here. The quiet lapping of the massive beach that seems to stretch on as far as the eye can see, the seashells and soft sound of wind, another prime example of SEs attention to details. 10/10

    Most Adventurous

This one goes to the Devil Manta spot in Kuftal tunnel. Surounded by monsters that con easy prey and decent challange to even the strongest of us adventures, and even the occasional tough scorpion, along with a great monster lurking beneath the depths waiting to attack its next fisherman (who is often enough waiting for him with a handful of his buddies), I give kuftal the most adventurous award!

Hey guys, you should post your favourite fishing spots, maybe along with a SS of you there to show us!

Yea expect I avoid Carpenter's Landing like the plaque. Naively fishing Lungfish, Newts and others from thre have made me hate that zone all together :/ It is pretty creepy with the fog though.

Yeah, I tried out the jungles last night and I gotta say, I wasn't impressed. Forest Carp just seemed like a bitch to pull up, and I had too many times when I had the stamina just down to nothing and as I hit my button it popped back up.

I'll tough it out in Port San d'Oria for a little bit, but I may do as someone else suggested and move around to a few different places. Worse comes to worse, if I fish for profit I can buy my Lu Shangs and do the quest later to sell it off or for a mule.

It must have been early 2005 when I first started doing GP fish and the guild asked for zebra eels. My highest job was 38 whm. Sneak fishing right under those den scorpions that con dc to level 75's was intense. I ended up making a lot of gil everytime they came up at the guild fish though since everyone else was too chicken to fish them.

So, I've been trying a bit of fishing the last 2 days, probably only done about 3 hrs total. I'm using the guide that cdgreg posted.

However, I have yet to reach level 1. And I've only pulled up about ~3 stacks of Nebs, which would equal maybe 10k an hour. =/ I've been sitting on the Selbina-Mhaura ferry with a Halcyon Rod and Crayfish Balls, but sometimes after a boat ride I'll have only gotten about 3-4 Nebs and sometimes not even that much. I know 3 hrs isn't much at all, but not even 1 level...really?

Am I missing something? Does it just start off really slow? That's what I'm assuming... and hoping. lol

I think I would honestly suggest getting into the teens or at least cap out on Moat Carp before fishing Nebs (also make sure you are wearing all 4 pieces of fishing gear). I know people say you can start on them from 0, and you can, but i notice a substantial increase in performance by being maybe 15 levels or less away from the level cap of my target fish. My lost catches and line breaks have been reduced quite a bit by just gaining 7 levels on what I am fishing now. This is my experience not having a Lu Shangs yet, and I know much of what I have told by others is slanted a little because it's just so much easier once you have one (not insulting, but a friend I am getting advice from never had to worry about line breaks, but I do, as an example).

As much as people seem to hate ferry fishing, I enjoy the break every 15 or so minutes. It lets me get up and get a drink or hit up the restroom and not feel like I'm missing out on fishing opportunities. I guess it entirely depends on your pace, since I have been fishing when I get home after work, and am either talking or watching TV while I do it.

I will also second the 'fish for profit, take skill ups as a bonus' mantra. It seems much more enjoyable when I am surprised by a skill up, as opposed to hunting for one.
