I am also curious, seems neither of us saw the huge post with pictures explaining the change over on the ebisu thread.

I'll paste what I posted for the sake of ease. In addition from reading BG postings over the past few months it seems like the buff also only applies to certain legendaries, not all. Anyways, here goes:




Arthars is right, I posted this on my LS forums a couple days after the update, haven't posted it on here for obvious reasons. But everyone knows now so whatever:

Ebisu Buff
I posted about this briefly on BG, but have not elaborated any further since it can in theory hurt my personal profits quite a bit. Therefore I'm not going to try to convince the general ffxi public of what I am about to post, it's not in my best interest. So, here are some of the theories as to what may have been buffed, and what I believe was actually buffed.

Cap Raise
1.) It was originally hypothesized that the Ebisu buff would only be an increase in the hardcap number of fish before you reach full fatigue for one RL day. Lu's fatigue number is 200, while Ebisu's fatigue number seems to float between 200-220 for some odd reason. Anyways, through some simple testing (not on my part), it was confirmed the Ebisu fatigue cap is still reached between 200-220. There was no buff in the category of fatigue cap.

Bite Rate Increase/Line Break Decrease
2.) Some hoped that the bite rate of Liks and Gugs would be increased because they really take a decent amount of time dedication to fish up. I've fished up as few as 0 in 20 minutes before, and 2 in an hour. From looking at the number of Gug bites per boat trip, there has been no increase in average number of bites. Sure, some rides you'll get 6 bites, but other rides you'll get 1, so no change there. Also, the line break rate seems to be the same as it was before. There was no buff in the category of bite rate increase or line break decrease.

Depletion Rate Increase
3.) Other than being unbreakable, this is what makes Ebisu really shine over a Lu. While I never tried to fish Lik/Gugs with a Lu, I believe Elipse can account for this fact.

a.) Pre-update I was able to fish up Liks easily with Albatross but did not have a chance at Gugs with paid support. The majority of players on BG with Ebisu also said it was impossible to fish Gugs with only Albatross except for one who said he can quite often reel them in with only Albatross, but always goes down to the wire with the "You don't know how much longer you can keep this one on the line for..." message. While I never took any screenshots of myself failing at reeling in gugs, Elipse can verify through some conversations we had, that I was saving up for Moghouse Signboard because I was hoping to be able to pull up gugs without Penguin's ring. The last time I tried gugs pre-update was as a 96 natural skill with paid support, I tried them on both my main PC slowed down, and my laptop, neither PC could I get the gug below 30-40% before timing out.

b.) The day after the update I was fishing up guild points on the ferry between Selbina and Mhaura. Originally, the only place and time you could fish up Gugs was on this ferry when the pirate's attacked. So, while I was fishing up GP's the pirate's just happened to attack and a gug bit. I was at natural 99 skill with no paid support and as you can see I was able to reel the gug in without getting the low time warning.

c.) I was utterly shocked at the above finding. I posted it on BG and was told gugs on that boat during pirate attacks are probably just easier because they're the original gugs. So, after Einherjar I hit up the mhaura > whitegate ferry and tried out my luck on those gugs. They were just as easy as the pirate gugs, I made sure you could see in this SS that I did not get the warning message of low time.

d.) I posted again on BG showing the SS and people pointed out I had support in that (+3 skill) which was a good point, so I went back and fished up gugs without support just as easily. This verified that my natural 99 skill was not what made pulling up the gugs possible, because pre-update I had 96 skill + 3 support equaling 99.

e.) The poster on BG who constantly fished Gugs with only Albatross pre-update also now reports rarely seeing the low time message compared to seeing it on almost every Gug beforehand.

I believe through my pre-update failures on gugs, and post update SS's of fishing up gugs *easily* with only Albatross, the buff to Ebisu was in depletion rate.

As you can see, the reason I am not pushing my argument on BG against the people who are screaming WTF EBISU WASN'T BUFFED AT ALL, is because I don't want them flooding the gug market. Many people, like myself, never had the ability to fish gugs pre-update because Penguin's ring is such a pain in the ass to acquire but this makes it easy.

I don't know why people say skilling Fishing is so slow. There's been a lot of days where I couldn't make time to fish, nevermind capping fatigue. Even with some days below fatigue, the gil's been great, I had a few stacks of Istiridye made into pearls and a few even sold on the AH. This contest's fish is Gigant Squid so that's nice too. I also got a bunch of Bluetail there for Marlin bait.

I'm a bit short of my Lu paying itself off, in the next week I'll break the 3M mark though.

Started at LV14 on August 18th, joined the guild on the 23rd and have 14k GP so far.

if your going for SKILL ONLY, you can easily gain 1-2 skill per day all the way till 100 or 2-3 a day until 90 with pelican ring. 90-100 is average 1 skill a day max if you fish till fatique

no one says its hard but most people are lazy to stand there and fish 200 fishes a day

if your fishing for pure huge money, then yes, skilling up is mad slow

i took 3 months from 40-76, doing just marlins for kris (62-76 purely on silver sharks from same bait). this is the slow part, but i was after big money

quitted kris after 15th drop and move on to a fishing break(son born :D) and then back to mad skill up and only took me less than 2 weeks to 100. this is the insane fast part XD

From when I fished way back when in 2004 (never got far, just fished for carp for OMG BIG MONEY as a noob), compared to now, the skill up rate is very nice. I remember it took me forever just to cap on Moat Carp, which given my reason for fishing, I didn't complain lol. But I've gotten to 32.3 from around 14 in the past couple weeks, and I'm pretty satisfied with that. As a gauge, I made a purchase of Dusk Gloves for ~200k before I started hitting fishing hard, and that was pretty much all of my money at the time. Just skilling up from 14 to 32, I've already made over 200k. Might not seem like a whole lot, and NPCing Istiridye only gets me 3,600 a stack, but it's steady, easy money, which is something I've never had in this game (if only for my own laziness) and it's very welcomed. The few times I've hooked and caught a Mercanbaligi have been exciting too, especially after seeing they NPC for 600 each lol.

Err..up until 60 I was getting 4-5 levels a day, after 60 it dropped down to 2-3 and then at 90 it stopped all together lol. These are the days that I cap out, that is

I can typically get a chart within 20 marlins, so I know it's not bad, I just typically don't have the time to go fish them out. Either doing stuff with LS or trying to solo/duo myself an Astute Cape (shit doesn't exist, swear to god)

But oh well, with the price of kris on Caitsith and how easy the fight is I'll have to make time
