Ok i just clicked on raven's link on titanictus site and saw a wall-o-text lol
Anyway i have read it and i think that theory might still hold true cause that guy didn't state which rod he is using to do the testing. Sorry if he did mention.

So what i am thinking is that there are 3 categories of rod, the common rods/lushang/ebisu. Assuming what that guy tested is still true unless SE changed it, lushang and ebisu might have hidden "+fishing skills". And lu shang and ebisu have different hidden "+fishing skills".

To test if it is true that +20 fishing skills above the fish's cap will generate auto-depletion, we will have to test it with 3 categories of the rods. Once we actually know the exact auto-depletion levels, we can actually tell if ebisu/lushang has hidden skills. From then, we can conclude whether support is +2 or +3. Anyway, at 100 + all possible skills + support, can you stop lik/gugru's regen?

uhm... If I'm reading this right then you don't have to pull against the fish/rod direction to deplete? I use a control pad, not the keyboard. If so, this is not true any longer. Or, I suppose not with a normal fishing rod (I fish with the mithra rod).

I'm a level 30 fisher, and I'm fishing carps in Windy for a Lu (over halfway, yay). I have all four pieces of fishermen gear, which would make me 34 fishing skill, so I would be 23 over the 11 moat carp cap. I have to pull against the fish or the stamina refills. It does not automatically deplete. I wish it did O.O

Then that guy on titanictus probably tested it with a lu shang or SE did something to it. Hmmm, the moat carp regen its stamina or the HP remained stagnant if you didn't touch it? That will be interesting if the fish still regen when you are 23 levels over it lol

Edit: Ok, after seeing pixiehawk's post, i went to do some real quick testing. Using a mule with lv7 natural skill + hume fishing rod on moat carp at Knightwells pond, the fish didn't even regen. The HP just remained stagnant. Then i switched to lushang and still got the same result. So i am not sure how is your moat carp still regen-ing at level 30. You are probably hooking gold carp.

I don't believe so, then again I haven't paid attention since I upgraded to waders so I will check today after work.

edit: just realized I can add +1 skill more buying up a fisherman's body instead of apron, will try that out too.

105 skill + advance support. Liks and gugs regen. I'm only missing the furnishing + skill item which I'll probably never bother getting.

Silver Sharks were auto depleting for me last night at 97 w/o any gear on (so... 21 levels over cap) w/ a Lu Shangs.

Ok so i decided to be less lazy and do some testing. Please read what i wrote, interesting findings i assured you.

Firstly to start off is to prove the theory on Titanictus's link about 21 levels above cap so auto-deplete starts. So i went to buy a composite rod and do the following tests:

    Testing:
    Target Fish: Jungle Catfish (lv80)
    Natural fishing skill 97.6

Rod | Level gap | Result
    Composite rod| +17 | Auto-depletion

Testing disapproved that auto-depletion starts at above 21. Next:

    Target fish : Mercanbaligi (86)
    Natural fishing skill 97.6

Rod | Level gap | Result
    Composite rod | +11 | Stagnant
    +1 (tunica) | +12 | Stagnant
    +2 (tunica+hand) | +13 | Auto-depletion
    +3 ( no feet) | +14 | Auto-depletion
    +4 | +15 | Auto-depletion

    Ebisu | +11 | Auto-depletion

This testing shows that auto-depletion starts at +13levels above fish's capped and ebisu has hidden strength.

    Target fish: Ahtapot (90)
    Natural fishing skill 97.6

Rod | level gap | Result
    Composite rod | +7 | Stagnant
    Ebisu | +7 | Auto-depletion

Trying to see the strength of ebisu here.

Lastly and most interesting of all, so how much does fishing support gives?
Assuming auto-depletion is really at above 13levels.

    Testing: Assuming support is +2

    Target fish: Ahtapot (90)
    Natural fishing skill 97.6

Composite rod + 4 equips + fishing support(2?) gives me level difference of +13 and the result is auto-depletion.
Next, i removed a +1 from my equips, which gives me a level difference of +12 and the result is stagnant.
    Conclusion: fishing support gives +2

I will leave the strength of lu shang and ebisu to another day.

I had suspected that the Lu (and possibly Ebisu) applied some sort of effect similiar to skill boost, but I didn't think it would actually be so literal...

I will have to make sure each level I test with Lu and a different fishing rod to check results.

Edit: Aren't Giant Catfish level 31, not level 80?

    Jungle Catfish are 80

So if I'm reading this right, Ebisu gives like a hidden +6 skill for auto depletion?

I'm getting auto-depletion on grimmonites(90) at 80 skill with just Ebisu.

Thank you very much Windfoxster. I have a half day from work today so I'm omw right now to try to see if gug/lik will regen with max items/paid support. I just bought a fishing harness so will let you know how that goes. I have one more favor to ask assuming you can actually do it. I'd like to once and for all squash the theory that different levels of water energy while having moghancement fishing skill = higher levels of skill. If you currently have Moghancement: Fishing Skill (or now adays it's just fishing but can be distinguished through reading your key item) can you start with faint water, verify it's +1, load up to either powerful or if you're really crazy overwhelming water and verify it's still +1? If you don't have that ability I think I can pull it off later using ahtapots + whatever rod you were using (I think carbon).

I'm going to try to borrow a Lu from an LSmate to test its hidden attributes. Is anyone reading this lower with Ebisu? All my lsmates with ebisu are 100 now =(. From my auto-depletion with ebisu but 0 extra skill on 100 Ryugu/Titanictus we "know" the hidden skill on the rod must be atleast +13 then?

Anyone reading this who's in the 80's with Ebisu lol? If the hidden skill is something like +20 then it's going to be very hard to test unless we find someone real low since even @ 90 skill with ebisu guesstimating it's +20 already puts you at 110. I think the best fish to test on are Pterygotus since they're VERIFIED at 99 unlike Legendaries which we just assume are 100 because that's what wiki says. 99+12 = 111 which should not auto deplete, 99+13 = 112 should auto deplete. So basically I think we need to find a 90 skill ebisu owner or below and have them stack skill gear (assuming they don't deplete yet) and slowly remove pieces/support until there is no more depletion. I think at that point we can simply subtract 13 from the level gap and figure out the hidden skill stat?

I know there's a lot of "if's" in there and I'm by no means a math major, so let me know if I made some big mistakes in the proposed testing process with pter's.

*100 + Ebisu (13 atleast) + 2 (support) +5 (gear) +1 (furniture) = 108 + hidden ebisu (13 atleast) = 121 DOES NOT stop gug regen while the rod is in the middle. If auto-regen works in the same manner that auto-depletion does that would mean gugs are AT LEAST 134 skill?

More, I have auto-depletion on Titanictus/Ryugus with 100 skill + ebisu with 0 gear/support/furniture which means ebisu gave me at least +13 I believe.

edit: ohhh Kaeli is 80 skill with ebisu, our perfect test subject! Anyway you can try some fish higher than grims where you are NOT YET auto-depleting and try to figure out at which level you do begin auto-depleting by adding gear/support?

Thanks! Your best bet may either be Black sole/dils which are 96 or Pter's in Nashmau which are 99. If you need bait/location advice let me know. I'm just fishing gugs F5'ing this.

I think it will be faster for you to test on the moghancement thing you suggest, cdgreg cause currently my moghouse is mog:alchemy lol

Right now i am trying to find the point between auto-regen and stagnant with my mule.

np lol. That's the real reason I started this "quest." I wanted to put that ghetto theory to rest once and for all. The idea of proving what paid support is was simply a cover to make it seem more meaningful lol. Looks like we stumbled upon something though along the way .

Definitely auto-deplete on pterygotus, skill 80, Ebisu only. Even took off the apron just in case.

hmm wtf lol. If I'm doing the math right that means you're sitting at ATLEAST 112 skill putting you +32 over your natural skill level...If you don't mind testing and want to go hit up the ferry with some meatballs you can see if !!! terrible/positive you dont have enough skill autodeplete. Those fish are at least 100 skill if not higher. While you may not be able to reel them in to verify whihc they are, ryugu titans whip the rod back and forth like a weedwhacker. I'm not sure where great blue is getting their fish level from but I'll have to play with some of the more rare ones that they have marked 120+.
