Ok, ran some tests on auto-depletion with Lu Shang's. Test was done with no fishing skill gear or furnishings at start, and skill added gradually. I've never done any tests for anything in FFXI before so let me know if I did anything wrong.

Natural skill: 83
Target fish: Zebra Eel (70)

13 skill above cap: No auto-depletion (No gear/furnishings/support)
14 skill above cap: No auto-depletion (Legs)[+1]
15 skill above cap: Auto-depletion granted (Legs/Hands)[+2]
16 skill above cap: No Change in speed or amount of auto-depletion (Hands/legs/body)[+3]
17 skill above cap: No Change in speed or amount of auto-depletion (Hands/legs/body/The Big One).[+4]
18 skill above cap: No Change in speed or amount of auto-depletion (Legs/body/Waders/The Big One)[+5]
19 skill above cap: No Change in speed or amount of auto-depletion (Hands/legs/body/Waders/The Big One)[+6]
20 skill above cap: No Change in speed or amount of auto-depletion (Hands/legs/Waders/The Big One/Adv. Support)[+7]

Ok, now for the results on my testing to find the point of Auto-regen and stagnant.
Test results will be shown in this format [ rod used| level gap | result| reel in].
Those fishes that have "blank" under [reel in] means that i timed out/didn't bother. And all regens are found while the fish is still "alive".

Okay for this fish, i went East ronf with fly lure and only 2 fishes bite it. Cheval salmon and trout. Because trout is a dick to reel in so i didn't bother and i can assure you 95% chance that it is a trout biting when i test this. You will know why i say this if you read on.

TL;DR. The level difference between Auto-regen and stagnant is tested to be -24 and shining trout's capped should be higher. So far till now it seems that
Fishing skill 13 levels above capped = Auto-depletion
Fishing skill -24 to 12 = Stagnant
Fishing skill -25 and below = Auto-regen

Hmm, wiki put zebra eel at 71 capped and greatblue put it at 70. Even then with a lushang i find it hard to believe there isn't any auto-depletion at 13levels gap raw. Can you test this with a composite rod too?

Sure I can try with composite tomorrow if I can find one. Although, even if the zebra eels were 71, I should have seen auto-depletion at 83+1 skill if it was a 13 level gap, and I didn't get any auto-depletion until 85 skill (83 +2).

I've been sitting with 20 of them in my bazaar and 7 on AH on Garuda server, and no one has bought any for 3 days. Had my mule sitting there 24 hours a day.

Gugs and liks, taking me days to sell mine where as before it was hours.

Which might explain the seeming effect of the penguin ring, mayhaps the auto depletion adds onto your normal depletion with the rod, thus once you go voer the 13 skill cap with ebisu, which if +6 you could pull it off with +4 in gear, moglification, and guild?

I'll try taking stuff out of my MH to turn on my big one's fish skill + and combine it with guild support, ebisu, and +4 in gear to see if I get a auto depletion on lv 100 fish.

I already verified at 100 skill with ebisu and 0 gear/support/furniture that I auto-deplete ryugus as well as titanictus.

Buyers? How about ones for sale? There's only been 1 gug on AH for something like a week now, and I've never seen mules in Selbina whenever I've gone. I didn't want to have to fish my own gugs. Looks like I'll have to stop being lazy now lol

Definitely seeing that on Phoenix as well. Saw some guy running through whitegate the other day and bought 3 Liks' off him. As for selbina I haven't been seeing any in the last 4-5 days.

Went to borrow a lu shang from a friend and re-do the auto-depletion test. Following the same method of testing, it shows the exact same result as using a composite rod. So it can be safe to assume that lu shang doesn't have any hidden "+fishing" skills.

To Pun: I think you don't have to get a composite rod now. Using lu shang should yield the same result. Cause at 13levels above capped, the auto-depletion is really slow, did you leave the rod till time out to find the auto-depletion? Or you can use another test fish, Tavnazian Goby (75) with minnow at Rafeloux River. From greatblue,that is the only fish that bites minnow.

For those that are lv100 fishing, can you do the auto-depletion test too so i know i am not crazy lol. Using ahtapot since mercanbaligi is too low.

For those with ebisu at level 78~mid 80s, can you test on cave cherax in quicksand to see if you have auto-depletion? I remember when i was skilling it on cave cherax at lv81-ish with lu shang, there is auto-regen. This should put cherax at lv105 at least.

I did not leave the rod until time out for most of the catches because my sneak would be wearing. Instead I brought the eel to a very small sliver of health and pressed my nose against the screen to see if there was any auto-depletion. It must be insanely slow if it showed up for you.

I'm 84 skill now so do you want me to try with bladefish and be a natural 13 skill above cap, or go for goby?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and day a lt of fish probably have the wrong cap listed on various sites. Stuff like ahtapot, merc, dil, etc are so often skilled on it's obvious but things like zebra eels normaly only get touched for gps. I doubt pun goofed anything up in his test, I'm guessing the fish cap is just incorrect. I'll put together a quick up to date post when I'm home later with the findings and things that still need to be tested. But in short, one of the most important things is finding the true cap for titanictus!

Haven't check bladefish but the point i want to make is to find a fish that you can isolate with that bait so you can be 99% certain that it is that fish that is biting. Something like cave cherax in quicksand caves. Once you can isolate that fish, the best way to check auto-deplete is to leave the rod alone when it bites till timed out. You should see a distinct chunk of HP missing when you timed out. Well, i stared at the HP bar too lol

if you want to fish and really can't do the quest, then yes. Without a doubt.

otherwise you should really quest it. You get skillups the whole time.

I'll be blunt here, stop wasting your gil on luck and invest some of it in a sure-thing. Buy the Lu, go to Nashmau and start yanking up Istiridye like it's your job. AH some, NPC some, sell stacks to Bonecrafters for 5k each. Take that gil you're making until 53 and roll it over into your luck based crafting. After 53 you'll be making 100k a day off pure NPC, enjoy! The best part is you don't even need "solid time" to fish, an hour here, 30 mins there, is awesome if you can leave your guy in Nashmau. Otherwise it's pretty easy to get there through various ways, takes about 5 mins.

I enjoy blunt. I've been actually fishing more noble ladies, bluetail, cone calamary. I hq the calamary into black ink, and have reliable buyers for my bluetail and ladies.
