For those who have fished up the MMM Ring... how well does it work? Noticeable? Negligible? ~ Worth going after?
For those who have fished up the MMM Ring... how well does it work? Noticeable? Negligible? ~ Worth going after?
If you're lucky sure, I've been losing on the first turn-in by the brothers way too often.
Personally I'll do freshwater until I get both rings, then try saltwater, targetting the three-eyed or something. Really the whole rune is silly.
As for the heron ring, not sure but really I get synth support while skilling and it does SEEM to help fish regain less stamina when the rod shifts. No idea on penguin, from what I've read it's not as good as the other stamina depletion ring but it's free with support on.
I assume ppl are losing with 117 because brothers keep getting three-eyes fish? They really worth ~1.5k? 2 of those and you lose.
The only time I ever lost V08 was a bug "brothers reel in 0 points! warp you to fail room now!"
Edit: The MMM thread is dead, unlike awesome fishing. So does anyone know what rune 108 Conditioning Contract does in fishing maze? And which rune it needs to be paired with?
I'm gonna ask a "stupid" question here. I have known quite a few people who have gotten the rings soloing blank mazes, or duoing fairly blank mazes without any fancy stuff like salt water/salinity shift (sp). What are you guys trying to accomplish tackling the difficult mazes that seem to be glitched instead of hitting up the basic mazes that have an acceptable drop rate? Are you hoping there's another ring or something?
For the people having trouble soloing, if you use frog lure on the pond in the main room, and a worm lure at the little pond down the hill to the left it should be an easy win. I generally won 3000 to 1200.
almost had another sweet pic to go along with my avatar but I took the pic a bit too early.

A lot of the saltwater fish cap higher, so for those like me that are nearly at the cap for every freshwater fish in the maze, can do MMM while skilling if you're under 80 :D
Not many do saltwater MMM though so there's still the possibility that there's other benefits nobody knows about.
Careful Cdr, once that guy takes your fishing rod its gone forever bro.
Yeah, there are things that people either don't know about, or at least, there are more things SE is going to do with MMM fishing.
For instance: http://www.ffxiah.com/item.php?id=17010&stack=1
If you'll notice in the "new items" list on ffxiah, the Goliath Worm appears right alongside all the other MMM ex bait ( http://www.ffxiah.com/?new_items ). Seems that either this is unlocked by using a certain rune in your maze (wherein you can catch REALLY big fish?), or perhaps it has yet to be implemented (along with adding new fish...perhaps Lik/Gugru/Matsya/whatever).
Edit: NVM, this is for the quest Songbirds in a Snowstorm http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/So...in_a_Snowstorm
It's generally accepted in other MM mazes, that adding more runes to up the difficulty, also increases the drop rate.
Just because a lot of people are getting lucky with few runes, and people doing more runes are getting bad luck, it's just that.. luck. I don't think there's really any actual proof that harder maze yields a higher drop rate, but it's generally accepted. It's kind of like direction in synthing. If doing something as simple as just facing some stupid direction can help increase your HQ rate, why not? Although harder maze->higher drop rate is a bit more accepted than directional synthing, lol.
Putting harder runes, as long as you can win it, still increases the marble reward, at the very least.
Few people already touched on this after your post, but nothing is proven yet so it's all opinion. My understanding from reading the MMM thread back when ppl were spamming NM voucher for koggel/gnole torque/etc is that making it harder = higher drop rate. Pure speculation. And I've now gone 0/56 on either Seagull or Heron ring with basic mazes (mules + static group)
But what I am sure of, is trying to get the most out of your maze runs. More marbles are always nice since the marble nerf it's hard to accumulate tons now (still have ~2k marbles saved up) and the trial runes, might/supreme for sure give more marbles per run. We got 2 Ebisu and a Lu, it's already easy, why not get a few more marbles? (some runs the brothers didn't even get to turn in their 1st round of fish, 3k to 0 ftw)
As for rune 117 Salinity Shift. The reason I'd put it in is for better chest rewards at the end. What I've been doing is stocking up for future GP on each chest (Elf/Mithra/Taru) now I'll try saltwater and save up some of those for future GP too now.
So since people mentioned buying stuff with marbles I went and looked...I think this guy needs a Spelunker's Helmet to fish in!
The Goblins sell some novelty gear:

Ganked from ffxiah.com

Go go speculation on hidden effects of spel... never mind..
I think another reason people are still exploring rune combos is to determine whether you can get the other Inside the belly rewards, since things like Brigands, Risky patch, etc are available from it.
I think it's unlikely that you'd get something like Saber shoot/Opal silk in the pool, but then I would have thought it unlikely to get Pirates/Brigands chart in there either.
As for the MMM thread being dead, it's still alive, just no one knows the answer, otherwise you'd have an answer within a day.
More than any other pieces of gear, Spelunker's Helm and Caver's Shovel have increased the rate at which people /check me. I'm leveling my staff skill just so I can use Retribution with a shovel. (Earth Crusher is the most fitting thematically, though.)
Also, the JUSTICE SHOVEL has totally increased drops in Salvage and Dynamis. One time I wore a shovel and we got a linen pouch. Proof positive! >.>
Last evening with my fishing friend Krish we had two great runs.
On my run I got a Seagull ring (/cheer), and then on his mules run we got the biggest treasure pool I ever saw. Heron ring, Brigand Chart, and three runes, the fish and giant dokko too. As his Jeuno mule does not need a ring, he thoughtfully passed it to me, so now I have both. I plan to test these on Liks as soon as I have the time.
He also had a friend have a ring drop not long before we started.
We noted that it was a full moon. Moon phase always has had some effect on what runes seem to drop, perhaps it plays a part in the other stuff here....
Now we need to get rings for his main! Onwards!
I've found Seagul>Heron by a landslide on Liks/gugs. But looking forward to see how other people feel.
I was thinking that seagull/albatross might be the best combo for Liks for me. Being rid of having to get penguin rings to land them might make it bearable to go back to that grind. But I'll be testing asap.
