Yes. I've taken mules in with level 0 fishing and they do fine, believe it or not.

103, 104 (Silence, Amnesia), and a couple others.
4th run I DC@20 min >< but was on my way to winning...
5th run was killing the Giant Catfish, 1st pond, Frog lure. When that pond dried up hit 2nd with shrimp lure and worm lure and scored 3 Monke-Onke.

9 marbles, rune 108 (conditioning contract) and risky patch, in addition to the standard fish prize.

Here's my findings thus far in freshwater:
1st pond, Frog Lure, Giant Catfish
2nd pond, Shrimp/Worm Lure, Monke Onke
3rd pond, Frog Lure, Giant Donko.

And to those of you hesitant to get started MMM Fishing, don't fret. Head to Duplidoc, check out the copiable mazes, look at all the runes on those mazes and pick one that looks good.
Lu Shangs helps a LOT, but isn't vital to success. Fish like normal. Use baits and go for it. Bring a fishing friend, have fun. You'll learn quickly. Good Luck

I've found that if you lack a Lu Shang's, using the MMM Fishing Rod that the goblin offers seems just as good while in the fishing MMM. Don't forget to switch out of it once you exit though, because it's absolutely terrible everywhere else.

Hmm. Since the MMM rod is EX, you should be able to hold more than one (so long as the moblin is willing to give you another rod while you still have one). Further, you can break the rod (not sure on what fish).

I wonder if you can repair the rod, and if so, if having multiple broken MMM rods could be a cheap way to skill up a bit in woodworking. Anyone try to repair an MMM rod like a Lu Shangs? (only using a light crystal)

Dang after a 1 bite/0 reel in boat trip I just had my best ever: 8 total bites, and 6 gugs reeled in all in 1 trip. I really like this seagull's ring, I'm killing gugs on average of 30-40 seconds now.

My best ferry ride for Gugs was: Hooked, nothing for 4 casts, then bam! 7 Gugs in a row, not in 1 ride, *in a row*. Was nearly 8 gugs in a row if you don't count those 4 nothings at the beginning. It's a shame I only pulled up 5 of them, 3 line breaks (in a row), then 5 pull up (in a row).

It's a level 100+ legendary fish, can break Lu, and only appears during pirates attack

With Lu + Albatross maybe, otherwise no. Although I'd say just spend the time skilling, probably not worth hours hoping for pirates.

few questions, i did some searches but didn't find the answer. though i read alot of discussion about this from cdgreg/urat and others.

1) stuffed "big one" and fishing hole map virtually provide same effect by itself, If you don't have hole map. "big one" can provide same effect.?

2) "big one" + hole map = moglification? which is not +2 fishing but +1 fishing? does it reduce line snap?

3) "big one" + hole map + signboard = moglification, would there be a point to even get a signboard if effect = #2 above? 200k GP is alot to get over time, if its no better than #2.

any concrete testing done with moghance and mogli? like line snap rate down?

Big one is pretty much the same as Map, the only difference is aura strength of 5 vs 9. Both will provide you with Moghancement fishing which is +1. Some will say omg you need moghancement fishing skill, but atleast in my key items it said moghancement fishing and in the description it said increased skill. I know a long long time ago it was moghancement fishing skill, but don't get hung up on that.

You will NOT get Moglification without signboard. You NEED signboard + big one or fishing map to get moglfication. No concrete testing afaik, all I know is the moglification adds a natural penguin like effect. As for line snaps I don't know anything about that.

It does not matter if you have both map + big one or large amounts of water energy, it is still only +1 skill.

edit: I have recorded snap ratio since getting signboard. This is with 100 skill, Ebisu, waders, moglification, Apron, paid support, etc.

example: 18 caught, 9 snaps.

it's very consistent.. sometime i would sit at say 20 caught, and 7 snaps. I can rest assure that the snaps are going to be coming... then 15 mins later it's 22/11.

I may get streaks of catches, but in the overall run it comes out to 2:1 ratio. I also try different moon phases and didn't seem to matter, that ratio is same... just with more bite rate.

Ya my #'s work out to about 66% success rate. I had my best streak ever the other day, 8 straight successful reel ins lol. I also never bothered getting map, doesn't seem worth the effort.

You sure can, assuming there are actually sea zombies on your AH.

You can try but i doubt you can get any good ones off the AH for your fishing contest, although i have a friend that bought marlin from AH and won the contest in top20. Besides, you also have a chance that you might bought the one that had already been registered in the contest.

btw sorry I misread your original post about zombies as pertaining to today's GP's not fish ranking fish. You can use AH fish as long as they're not marked with something like Fishing Ranking: X.

You really have a few choices here pertaining to winning a ring:
1. You buy all the zombie's that show up on the AH for a week or two, then re-sell everything once you have decided you have a "winner".
2. Hop on the boat every once and awhile and try to contact a fisher who fishes them directly.
3. Keep an eye in Selbina near the fishing guild and look for Bazaar's with Sea Zombie's, don't be afraid to spend 100-200k for a guaranteed winner. Imo it's well worth the gil that you'll make back eventually.
