Thanks Nits. The other 4 Gugru was from a friend was doing the Ebisu quest and had those left over and gave them to me after he got his item. He is the one who promised me he'd fish up all the Lik and Gugru I need. So I guess now it's just the Liks I need.

I have a feeling I'm gonna go for a long stretch on those. Course I won't worry about that till I'm higher in fishing. For now I'll sit where I'm at for items. It's gonna sit in storage till I'm ready.

Considering starting this quest but a bit torn.

If I'm 91+ stuff fishing, sitting on 95+ GP, and want to start this quest, do I plan to buy the fish or have any hope of actually fishing them up?

I don't have MMM rings, but can get an albatross (sitting on a chart), no mooching. Also, I have more gil than patience, and no WW. But I know me, and I'll srsly start getting whiny if I have turned in 500+ fish and still no rod.

what to do??

-Prestige/Completion
-Sell off Lu / never have to lend it out

Honestly, if you are a small fish fisher for gil, Lu does just great. Ebisu is more for the Fishing Community Prestige and big legendary fish fisher.

There's really no massive benefit from ebisu other than unbreakability which is most useful on gugs/liks. Everything else that you'd fish for profit can for the most part just as easily be done with Lu.

There's a few things to consider, first off, what is the market like on your server for gugs/liks? Go check out Selbina a few times, during NA primetime, JP primetime, the weekend, random mid-weekday, etc. If there's already multiple mules sitting there bazaaring Liks/gugs the market is already probably pretty flooded. The lik/gug market is really a very silly scheme, the more fish you sell, the more competition you cause. I haven't sold any fish in a few weeks, but when I was, there were 3 other bazaars in Selbina, all of which bought fish from me while trying to get their ebisu. My point is, as you make money through these sales (if the market isn't flooded) you are in essence killing your own market. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, there's nothing you can do about it lol.

Secondly, buying the fish vs fishing them yourself. Fishing them yourself...fuck that to put it bluntly. One of my best in-game friends was buying liks from me and also trying to fish them on his own with a Lu and a dual box WW account to fix the broken rod. He was averaging somewhere between 2-3 Liks PER HOUR. Breaking it down, that's 30k-45k per hour, assuming you can find a seller for 15k each. Sure you'll have some great hours where you pull in 60-75k worth of liks, but you'll have another where you pull in 0-15k. Sanity wise, there's no way I'd be able to deal with the breaks, especially if you don't have WW. I think general statistics show a 66% success rate pulling in lik/gugs WITH AN EBISU vs line snap, but more like 25% success rate WITH A LU vs line snap/rod break. I'll probably get some hatred from people who fished them all themselves, so let me say I'm not saying it's impossible, but I don't have the stomach for it.

Thirdly, a HUGE benefit imo skilling in the 90's is owning an Ebisu. I skilled 90-99 off ONLY LIKS. I use Albatross ring only and an old PC. I sold privately to buyers for anywhere between 10k-15k per fish depending on who it was and when I had no buyer stored the fish on mules. Trust me, at some point you will sell all the fish, it's only a matter of time. This is why I hate people undercutting below 15k per fish so god damn bad. Someone will come along who wants 100+ fish, don't sell them consistently for lower just because the buyer isn't around right now. That's a soapbox rant, but my point is, between 90-100, I was pulling up probably 20-30 Liks per day and easily easily easily made the gil I invested back. I loved it, skill ups while making 300k a day, can't beat that if you're patient.

Fourthly, it's a status thing. If you've been patient enough to level fishing to 90, you've earned the prize, not the prize a level 1 fisher can buy off the AH, but the price that an endgame fisher has. Sure, someone can argue uhhhh any fisherman 28+ can get the items!!!! Sure, but you need to be 78 with 100k GPs to get the key item. An ebisu really is a status item when it comes to fishing.

Lastly, if you decide you are going to go for Ebisu you need to be willing to spend it all. I don't know how much gil you have, but you need to fully understand that it all may be gone and you'll have nothing to show for it. If you half ass it and give up after being 0/150 on the first item you've wasted 3m and probably scarred yourself mentally lol. Remember, you can sell the Lu after which will cover one of the items most likely, but ya you'll definitely be paying a chunk out of pocket. However, assuming you skilled in Nash post 53 you've probably made a decent chunk of change npcing 40 levels of fish.

On average, it seems about 1/200 on EACH item. So the "average" cost seems to be about 400 fish. This is 4m at 10k each, or 6m at 15k each. Assuming Lu shangs is 3m+ on your server, you will on average spend 1-3m out of your own pocket.

On a more personal note, a few years ago I went 1/137 HQing cursed mitts which cost me about 27m. Buying the -1 would have cost me 10m, and not a month after I uncursed them Morrigan's was released. From that day on I pretty much vowed to never again invest gil into something that could not be re-sold in the future. However, I broke that rule for M robe and Ebisu rod. I felt buyers remorse for the M robe even though I'm a career BLM and have RDM, but never once felt buyers remorse for the rod.

In the end it's your call, just be ready to blow every gil you have with absolutely no promise of success in the end. If you want further advice on how to do it cheaply, contact your local bazaar'ers, check ffxiah.com listings, and make friends with high level fishermen. Shit I just checked, you're on bahamut and the fish are 10k each on the AH, you can probably buy some privately for 8-9k each. You'd be nuts not to buy the fish at that price, fishing up your own 2-3 an hour is silly at a gil earning ratio of 20-30k an hour lol. Goodluck, last piece of advice, expect nothing out of the first 150 lik and first 150 gugs, it will make the early failures much easier to stomach!

edit: oh ya, just because you have Lu + high fishing + albatross doesn't mean you will be able to fish liks/gugs. It depends more on your PC/ability to slow it down.

I have a few goals: Finish the last .9 on my CC mule, finish GS on my other one (i have to have signed HQ jewelry from QueenofJeuno i mean come on).

Then, I'll think I'll look at what's left and go for Ebisu if I still have the itch.

Or change my mind tomorrow and start buying fish...At least you ruled out even trying to catch them for now!

So yesterday marked the end of the fishing contest on Titan. I spent like 3 days fishing for Gavial fish. Highest fish I could muster up was a 108lm/245pz fish. I ffxiclopedia'd the sizes. Highest they go is 130lm. I figured "hell I might have a chance this contest."

Went to check results. BAM! Not even ranked. Pretty much top 10 people all had 130 capped fish. I was kinda upset but oh well. I used both meatballs and minnow fishing both Gusgen mines and Drakenfall in North Gusta, using a Lu Shang's. Was I doing something wrong?

To be blunt, I'd say the only thing you did wrong was not fish them enough. I know you said you spent 3 days fishing them, but unless that was 3 days to cap or something probably not enough. When I was in the fish contest market I'd look at ffxiwiki size and figured there's no way to win without 5 or so less than "biggest." In addition, a lot of times ffxiwiki sizes are actually SMALLER than the largest possible. If you would have asked before the end of the competition what size I thought would place I'd probably say 125+.
