I'm on a similar boat. Think I've done the runs about 50+ times and the only items aside from fish and random runes have been 3x Risky Patch, 4x Tourquis Earring, 4x Heron Ring (doing runs with new people to MMM), 3x Pirates and 3x Brigards Chart lol. I'm beginning to think Seagull Ring isn't for me~

PS: Man Today fishing was really really bad. I spetn 2 hours on the ferry trying and only got 3 Gugru to show for it...About 8 Line snaps though. Well this ride complete shattered my beliefs on the moon phase affecting fish (was 100% Full Moon of all things o.o)

I have read through about half this thread so far in between calls at work and plan to read the rest over the next few shifts. I think I have a rough plan of how I want to take my fishing but I thought I would get some opinions from everyone here.

I currently do not have a Lu Shang's Rod and afaik I do not have access to one through borrowing or purchasing. I fish from 0-24 in P.San skilling on Moat/Tri/Gold and turning in the moats for the quest. I currently have 1500 moats turned in. This leaves me with 8500 left to go for Lu Shang's.

I decided to try Nebs for cash to buy the moats to finish the quest but the catch rate was pretty poor (about 8 per trip) and the AH is pretty flooded with them causing the price to fluctuate a lot (2 days and mine haven't sold yet). I am thinking this method isn't going to work.

I am now deciding between 3 methods:

1.) Fish moats for the quest in Windurst while skilling on Gold Carp

2.) Fish moats in Windurst while skilling on Gold Carp and selling them on Jueno AH for 5k/stack and buying my rod. Rod is ~3M to buy

3.) Fish in Nashmau for Istiridye for skill/cash and either buy the carp to complete the quest or buy the rod outright (close to the same price given rod and carp prices on Lakshmi; I can buy carp for 4k/12 in San)

I am leaning towards #3 because I think it to be the fastest method to obtain the Lu Shang's but with only a Halcyon rod I fear I would have too many line/rod snaps. I could use crayfish balls to minimize loss on line snaps but how often would a Halcyon break?

Supplementary question: I plan on going for Ebisu eventually and I know that WW seems to be almost a must have if I plan to fish the Lik/Gugs. I originally planned to take cooking to 100 to go with the fishing. Would I be better off stopping my cooking at 60 (currently 48) and taking WW up to repair the rod; or is it feasible to take cooking to 100 and use profits from fishing/cooking to buy the Liks/Gugs for Ebisu. Current prices on Lakshmi are 18k for Lik, and 12K for Gugs.

Sorry for the long post, if anything has been answered recently in the thread feel free to call me a n00b and I will go back a few pages and search for it. Like I said I have only got to about page 65 so far and plan to keep reading it while at work.

Go with the third option. I wish I had realized the potential of that place earlier instead of running around to ridiculous places for fish that barely sold for gil at the npc. You can live in Nashmau practically forever, after you cap on those shells you can switch right to ahtapots and the bream version fish, which is even better gil/fish than the shells are.

Do whatever it takes to get the Lu it's worth it. As for ebisu this may not be convenient for you, but what I did was I kept track of my earnings from npcing all those nashmau fish over all the skill up and spent that on liks/gugs. This kept me sane, and controlled any possible gambling addiction that wanted to come out and destroy my original bank lol. Luck of course is nice to have, and I had it..got both parts in like 85 fish total dinging into ebisu, so it could be better or worse for you. If that's not your ticket, try to have ww leveled on your fishing account unless you enjoy travels to the npc to repair the rod, or if you can have an alt nearby to fix it.

As someone who is Fishing 55 and still without a Lu's, I think I can give you some advice.

I fished to cap on Nebimonites. They were great money, but I am checking your server's AH as I write this so I see that they are currently flooded.

    A) If you've noticed this a constant occurence, don't be afraid to continue fishing them. Try only putting up 3-4 stacks at a time but at a lower price by 500-1000 gil. A couple of other people's stacks will probably sell before you realize, and most of the time, the price rises back up to its previous level given their sales rate. And you still earn a very respectable amount for them.

    B) You can opt to hold them on a mule until times that supply is low and then sell them.

At 24, your bite rate should definitely be respectable on the ferry. Use Shrimp Lure for better results; just learn to differentiate between the Nebimonites and Noble Ladies as the latter might snap your line.

Once you hit 27, park yourself in Nashmau like everyone says and target Istiridye until 53. The bite rate is good. There are no monsters. It's an easy place to reach. Just be careful with losing your rig on items. Istiridye seem like they sell slowly, but if you keep them in constant supply, they actually sell decently once people realize someone is fishing them up regularly. They should sell for 6000-7000 gil per stack, depending on the current price for Shall Shells as they are a substitute.

If you still are lacking enough for a Lu's, get a couple of minnows and head to Buburimu Peninsula. Target - Bluetail (cap 55). These used to be somewhat difficult to reel in, but once I was Fishing 53, these were easier and even fun with a little extra focus. They sell well at the same price at Istiridye but at a faster pace.

    STILL MISSING THAT DAMN ROD?!
    I am.

Thank god for Trumpet Shells. They sell for 18000 gil per stack on your server and cap at 63, but unfortunately, they have a low bite rate. This is where I am currently at in my journey, and I have only fished up 5 stacks so far. Even though Great Blue says they can break Halcyon Rods, they haven't yet through my 5 stacks, so I'm hoping that's wrong. Anyway, this stage should help you greatly in reaching that 3 Mil gil goal.

How reliable are the trumpets for you? I tried them a few times, but never liked the low bite rate. With the neb/aht path you are possibly making more npcing them (I think they are 600/700 per fish) and you could catch roughly 50 an hour, which is certainly a faster skill up method compared to the trumpet shell path.

Well, if you're talking about targeting Mercanbaligi and Ahtapot in Nashmau with Shrimp Lure without a Lu's, that's just not feasible as both will snap your line.

I tried targeting Mercanbaligi with Minnow (cheap and easily replaced - 1 fish pays for ~3 minnows), but I didn't find the bite rate to my liking, but it is definitely possible. I suppose you could also try the same for Ahtapot using Crayfish Ball or Peeled Lobster.

Interestingly, Pterygotus are very easy to pull up; I pulled one up in the 30's. I've fished them once in a while for no reason in particular, but I don't know why any sane person would do that as the bite rate is horrendous...most people say about 15% which seems accurate from my sessions.

Back to Trumpet Shells, I really can't say since I haven't fished them for about a week, so I forgot at what rate I was catching them...but I do believe I was landing them at a rate of at least 1 stack if not 1.5 stacks per hour.

I'm sitting at 55.6 skill right now. I got the first 0.5 fairly quickly...about the first 20 shells. Then, I got only 0.1 on the next 50 shells roughly? I haven't been using my Pelican Ring since I want to skill up as slowly as possible as much as I hate the thought seeing as I'm still about 1 Mil gil away from Lu's.

Ahh yea I was placing assumption on having Lu, bought mine early so I've no idea what snaps/breaks other rods.

Then, yes, use a Shrimp Lure like the 5 other people with Lu's in Nashmau.

Either make sure to note that you're talking about fish botting or stop throwing out bullshit numbers, because all you're doing is giving this guy false expectations; there's no fucking legitimate way you're catching 50 an hour on a consistent basis, especially so far from the cap. It's more like 35-40 fish per hour (~$24,000 gil/hr).

I'm going off of memory that was a long time ago, but I am fairly sure it was around 50 on the top end, I'd be surprised the low end being below 40, and no I never fish botted. Yea there are shitty periods when the fish don't bite, but that's when I don't go fishing since it's less productive with my time.

If you are able to play on a different platform other than PC that could be helpful for your fishing too. Pretty sure people complained a lot about having a harder time realing in liks/gugs on PC compared to PS2 due to frame rate. Suggested method to fix that though was to lag up your PC to slow down the reactivity of the rod.

Trumpet shells bite rate is massively effected by current weather.

As in it helps when there is Thunder weather?

Like I said, I only fished up 5 stacks but if I noticed anything, I caught more with either type of weather in effect. And I don't know for sure but there was weather for most of the time I spent there.

I recently got my LuShangs and got my fishing to 57 after taking an 8 month break from the game. Ive tried some various spots for gil fishing, since Im not too concerned with skillups at the moment. I like the Selbina/Mhaura boat, but am finding I have more stacks of fish then I can sell at a decent rate, so I tried Nashmau. The only thing I dont like about Nashmau is the constant reeling in due to no bites. Is this due to the number of people fishing, or is it some other factor.

Bite rate of Nash should be pretty darn good, like 25%+, have you tried a couple different times? Using shrimp lure right?

Yeah I am using a shrimp lure, but there are a few times where I can go 10 casts without a bite, but this is rather rare. I also zone when I go NPC the fish I do catch. Maybe my expectations are too high after spending so much time in Windy fishing carp and getting a bite virtually every cast. But seeing you say the bite rate is 25%+ makes it seem a lot more tolerable.

There will be times when it's "fished up." You can during those times goto Talacca Cove, or atleast when you're a little higher go there. If you want to be safe just cancel any !!! without positive not enough skill/terrible feeling.

I generally just did something else for a few hours when that happened or went to talacca. You may find talacca harder because for me there was less natural lag, which made the fish fight a lot harder, but that depends on your setup.

Nashmau is probably around 25% for merc/ahtapots if I remember right, but it's been atleast a year. If you're super pro you put /fish /echo cast cast cast cast cast in a gkey so you can re-cast without bringing ffxi to the forefront. That way you can read firefox and only switch to final fantasy when you actually have a bite.
