Wow, this makes fishing scary easy.
Wow, this makes fishing scary easy.
New fisher here, I've been skilling up and am wondering about the usefulness of the various rings and where they fit into the fishing equation.
Penguin - Increase skill at tiring fish
Albatross - Increase fishing stamina (time you can keep a fish on the line)
Seagull - Increase fish stamina reduction
Heron - Reduce fish stamina recovery
Pelican - Skillups
To me it seems the seagull and the penguin rings are pretty similar. Are the effects about the same strength? Where does the heron fit into the equation? Is it even worth going after the two MMM rings?
edit: I would assume so, but do the temporary fish caught in MMM count towards your daily cap?
Honestly, you aren't going to really care about rings until you are going after Ebisu. Then the ring to wear fish down faster and extend your fighting time are going to be valuable to you. The exception to this is the skillup ring, which if you fish smart, you aren't really going to care about until 96 > 100. The rings are nice, but with the exception of Ebisu fish, they are un-needed. (imo)
For confirmation:
I can get the items for Ebisu from Zaldon without having yet obtained serpent rumors from fishing guild npc? Specifically, I can get Saber Shoot and Opal Silk without the key item Serpent Rumors or activated the actual Ebisu Quest yet, correct?
Correct, I got both my items well before I had enough GP for SSR.
1/5 Mercurial Sword
1/1 Pirate's Chart
1/3 Brigand's Chart
Quite the evening :D
Didn't get M. Kris drop but the ring was the goal anyway.
Dinged 83 fishing last night. Holy shit skill ups are slow these days ; ; I knew it was coming but wow.
I've had the worst luck on the ferry these days.
I had back to back NM pirate rides and then a Sea Horror x.x. I nearly deleveled. I guess after my luck with the M. Sword I had it coming.
I've seen the "skillup in nashmau only" guide, and was using that in the past, and decided that I'm gonna go back to working on fishing skill, but can someone tell me why I shouldn't skill on lik/gug at the end if I only have Lu's, if I'm able to repair it myself? Why only use them for skill if you have Ebisu already?
I haven't looked too much into lik/gug catching, yet, so just curious, mostly.
They can be quite annoying to catch, and you need fishing rings to get them aswell. With Lu's your line will break and your rod will break frequently, but if you can repair it and keep lots of bait/crystlas on you then it shouldn't be a problem. Use them to get yourself Ebisu, then try and find a buyer to sell to and make some good $$ :]
Just in case anyone was curious (never seen it posted) I fished Sandfish off and on since like 9am this morning with Ebisu + Sabiki Rig and I've got 272 FISH (not catches). So you can go past fatigue if you're catching fish that catch 2-3 at a time (with sabiki/rogue rig/etc).
Good luck![]()
I asked a long time ago and always meant to check it, but got bored lol I don't have the attention span to fish as much anymore =( Thanks for figuring it out, though!
I've been browsing this thread for years, so I suppose it's about time I joined the fray.
I hit 86 less than a week ago, which was both a celebration and a cause for sadness. On the bright side, I'd been fishing in Nashmau and Talacca Cove purely on Mercanbaligi, Ahtapot, and Dil since 53, when I capped on Istiridye (which I fished on from the mid-30's when I finished questing Lu Shang's). So 86 was the first fish I capped in 33 long levels, but it also meant I was down to a 66% opportunity for a skill up.
I'm now at 88.7, most of which (and the least of which) coming from the last two days, with a 1.8 level day followed by a 0.1 level day. I think that averages out about right. Hitting 90 is going to be even more cause for celebration and sadness, with six entire levels with a 33% opportunity for skill ups if I stick around. Turned in the Gigant Squid about an hour ago, which makes Fishing my first Veteran craft.
Also got my Fisherman's Apron about two weeks ago. Doesn't seem to help much, but damnit it's nice to look like a fisherman. Serpent Rumors is next (at 41k points already), just in case I get lucky sooner than later (0/30 Gugrusaurus and 0/4 Lik so far). I'm debating between Waders and Fisherman's Signboard after that. One looks cool, the other might have a more tangible benefit.
Does anyone know whether Moglification: Fishing makes much of a difference with fish stamina? Does overwhelming energy make a difference?
Lastly, I finally got around to entering the Fishing Ranking contest. The fish was Titanictus. I caught 'em myself and sold the extras and just barely squeaked by with a first place finish.
Spoiler: show
Not sure if I should use the ring from 90-96+ or just wait until 96. I'm tempted to rig the contest and go for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-10th in future contests to see if I can get every fishing title out there...
As an aside, is Woodworking worth it? I happen to be 62+1 already, which I leveled back in 2004 and didn't have the foresight to continue it back when it would have been 100 times as profitable. It's not a very exciting craft, but I wouldn't mind fishing for the serpents myself, plus getting to the early 90's would be cheap enough. It's really between wood, cloth (57), and gold (51).
The fisherman's apron didn't seem to do anything for me either until I tried to fish for items only and mistakenly left the apron on haha. I loaded my moghouse with 65 rusty buckets for overwhelming water energy with moghancement: fishing(the +items while fishing not the +skill hancement). With that setup I'd land items nonstop, equiping the fisherman's apron and I'd get nothing. The reduces chances of fishing up items buff seems really strong but you'd have to specifically fish for items only to see it.
No idea on the signboard, I always forget to equip mine inside the house. Looks cool though
Use your pelican ring every time you fish for skill. If you don't waste your charges you should be able to hit 100 easy with a bunch of charges left over. Should check out armored pisces, you could hit 100 easily with a new ring and a 3-4day grind.
As a person without woodworking, I'd say it's worth it if you really want to catch the serpents yourself. I break my Lu on 33% of the serpents and it's kinda annoying of always circling between Selbina and Rabao. As an aside, is Woodworking worth it? Aside from the benefit of having WW for the Ebisu quest, there are ways to make money with it nowadays, at least on my server. An example would be to make ninjutsu tools (Shihei Toolbags rocketed up to 66k, although Nebimonite price hasn't changed for months, Jinko is a 2.8k synth and a stack goes for 24k). It's ridiculously cheap to level in the higher levels compared to what it used to be. (4k divine logs...)
However, to my knowledge, it doesn't make huge money in 1 synth. like say.. if you got a cerb+1 on leathercraft. (But then again, HQ cerb and dusk prices are dropping extremely as well.)
As you say, it doesn't seem particularly exciting as a craft and I know people who regret the choice of leveling woodworking. Yet, I found myself a lil greedy recently when I found I have to buy overpriced toolbags, because I can't make them myself effieciently.
Yeah, that's all I've been able to justify with Woodworking as well. It's not terrible, and with the way gear is being replaced it would largely depend on if they update the main crafts or just stick with Synergy. I could easily level it and delevel it for Ebisu fishing, but someday I know I'll have to throw away those mitts if I don't take it to 100... And, of course, there's always Bonecrafting. I'll spend a few days fishing Trumpet Shells some day to see how much I'd enjoy the prospect.
I'm 93.1 with 131 charges left on the ring. I stopped using any more charges on the Pelican, not because I didn't think it was helping (though it's hard to tell - holy shit do skill ups come slowly now), but because I'm simply not in a rush. I figure I'll use it once I get impatient with skill ups, if that ever happens. Hitting 90 was big, but since I know 100 will come inevitably, I've no need to force it. Though any more 0.1 days and I might change my tune...
