I saw a few people asking about fishing Hakuryu with Lu Shangs but never saw an answer about if it was possible. So I gave it a try.
My fishing is 100 and I couldn't even hook a Hakuryu. I spent 6+ hours trying but didn't hook anything that wasn't a black sole or a monster.
So my guess is either Ebisu is only rod that hooks it or maybe it needs Serpent Rumors to be hooked.
I was actually just about to post about Hakuryu and Lu Shang's, though I have more comprehensive info. Or, Everything You Wanted to Know About Hakuryu and Lu Shang's but Were Afraid to Ask - A Soliloquy in Fourteen Images:

Several fishing lines and one fishing rod were harmed in the making of this post.
Edit: Oh, and as of yesterday I do have Serpent Rumors. It's a legendary serpent, so that seems a likely answer after consideration.
Now that was one awesome post, bravo and thank you.
I approve of Finbar and his decorative post. Lack of rumors explains the nonexistent bite rate for my mule.
Since I'm on a roll...

As a note on hakuryu, I think you can only hook them in the "middle area" of the coastline. I tried at the extreme edge for a long time after making a trip to town and couldn't hook one at all. Moved to the center and bite rate went back to how it was originally.
I fish near the south edge and catch them, so it's not impossible at least.
Also, I'm not sure you need rumors to get these. I swore my girlfriend hooked one when she was skilling up with me. It was super hard and snapped her line on the lu's. I guess it could have been something else, since I don't remember what lure she was using (minnow, I think)
If you could confirm it, I'm sure we'd appreciate it. I only know that I can catch them, so it doesn't mean much unless someone without Serpent's Rumors can confirm otherwise. Wish I'd tried this a few days ago! Gigant bites on Minnow, but I don't think Gigant would snap the line of a Lu Shang's, unless skill has something to do with it. Also, you sure as hell should know if it was a Hakuryu or not, because I got the "You don't know how much longer you can keep this on the line..." message for every single one, even when lowering my FPS. It takes 25 seconds for that, so it took me at least 27-29 seconds for every single attempt. Not an easy fish to catch in the least with a Lu, and Gigant Squid doesn't give me much trouble.
Edit: Figured it was time for an avatar. If the shoe fits.
well the other problem is her fishing is only 30-40... so if she COULD hook them, I don't think it'd bite very often. I'll see if any happen to bite next time she hangs out with me out there (not the best place for her to skillup, anyways)
EDIT:
Lost count but Zaldon finally gave in and gave me both rings (Noddy was on the LAST fish I had... Puffin took two 120 min trips today to Abyssea - La Theine). I think I was somewhere around 1/50 on both of them.
Also, had to try a few Haku after getting them... it seems to make a SIGNIFICANT difference to me... I'm getting a lot more Haku's in a row than I did before, but I guess it could be weather based etc...
Have you guys noticed Puffin/Noddy = Haku heaven? Or am I just wishful thinking?
Post completely unrelated to the topic but..
and I know I'm a fucking idiot
but I JUST realized your name is Justin backwards
Edit: Also I've not really noticed much of a difference with and without new rings, guess I could try more without though and compare.
I didn't even realize that! Well I never get it, when someone uses thes backwards names.
I got both rings and I think that I notice some difference, as I get a decent biterate on things like Haku even during the worst moonphase.
However, I might just be imagining things.
Also, I was kinda shocked, these rings are not ex, so I sold a Noddy Ring for 1 M on the AH, cause Zaldon gave me 3 rings out of 20 Pelazoea. ><
Also, ^ epic post about Lu/Haku!
Whoa! They're can be AHed? I didn't realize!
How'd you get 3 if they're rare, though?
Yeah, they can be AH'd, hehe. I didn't think it would sell for 1 M, but it sold over the first night, so I guess I coulda charged even higher.
As I had a ring already, I needed to put it into my delivery box before trading more fish.
Presumably, one can make a lot of money of rings if people keep buying them.
Has anyone happen to find the location of Sekiryu (equivalent of Hakiryu) yet? Been fishing in warm and tropical waters without any luck yet =/
I am lving a friends fishing wail hes away and i have heard that if you fish with inventory full and release the fish that it will not count towards fatigue, my question is how true is this statement?
Not true at all. A fish lost to a full inventory counts the same as a fish pulled in.
tyvm Nibu ^^
These aren't concrete numbers, but I fished quite a few Armored Pisces pre-100 and post-100, the only difference being the rings I used. I kept Noddy Ring on the entire time, but Pelican Ring was swapped with Puffin Ring after I reached 100. Unfortunately I lost my log of pulls, but I remember on a daily basis the difference in pulls with Puffin Ring versus non-Puffin Ring was 3-5%. I'd need to test several thousand more fish (and keep track of my logs) to reach any kind of statistical significance, but thus far it doesn't seem to make a dramatic difference. A 5% difference on Hakuryu over the course of ten hours at five fish an hour, for instance, would equate to 30 minutes of fish, or two and a half fish.
