    Re: Fishing

New Fisher here, started recently and decided to take the Carp Skillup route to work towards Lu Shangs.

Thing is, I pull in 5-7 Stacks of Moat Carp/day + a bunch of Gold/Tricolor Carp and Dark Bass skilling in Jugner which makes for a few Carp towards Lu's and about 10-12k profit from NPCing fish after factoring in costs of Insect Balls/OP Warps per day.

At this rate I'm looking at roughly 5 Months before I can pick up a Lu's.
Spending what little profit I get to buy Carp at AH I figure I can reduce the time to 3 Months. 4 if I rely on purchasing carp from people undercutting AH sales.

Hell, even if I catch nothing but Carp each day 'til the 200 or so cap I'm still looking at 2 Months time investment before being able to devote my Fishing time to skilling/profit.

Buying all the required Carp puts me over the AH cost of a Lu's, and buying a Lu's will eat up most if not all of my Gil at the moment.

Any recommendations on whether it's worthwhile to go after the quest?
I have a sneaking suspicion that in the long run a Lu will pay for itself, especially since I plan to use Fishing to supplement my Cooking, but dropping all my Gil is a bit of a gamble at the moment.

On a less QQ note; what Lures/Rigs do you guys recommend purchasing as long-term investments? Planning to take Fishing as far as I can.
And is there any Rig which I can use to target Moat Carp specifically?

    Re: Fishing

in the lower right corner of E-9 on the map of rolanberry fields resides a small pond where the only fish you can catch with insect paste are moat carp. you can literally do 180 moat carp in a day there(assuming 20 monsters and rusty buckets). it's the best moat carp spot in the game. a close second is the drop off in dragon's aery.

get yourself a robber rig for when you fish shall shells, a shrimp lure for everything you're ever going to make money with, a minnow(actually many many minnows if you're ever going to go for your ebisu), and a sinking minnow. other than obscure lures like fly lures, frog lures, and worm lures, all of which i have sitting on mules but never use, those will be your bread and butter lures. but the fact of the matter is, no rig or lure catches moat carp. it's insect paste or die. many many years ago(and i got my lu shang in dec. 04) it was believed that robber rigs could catch multiple moat carps. while statistically a rig could snag one moat carp every 3-5 hours, you're really just wasting your time.

one final note. if you want skill while you're fishing you're moat carp, kick it old school in rabao. insect paste + halcyon rod(or whatever you kids use these days, i had a carbon rod and i liked it), moat carp bite the majority of the time, when they don't the thing biting will be a sandfish, which caps at 50, and sells for 5-8k a stack depending on server.

    good luck and good fishing.

Cheers for the advice on Lures, might go splurge/craft a bit and mule them for now.

Probably going to stick to Jugner 'til 30-something. Sandfish don't seem to sell to AH well on Asura and they NPC for less than what I would get in Jugner.

Though I would have a better Carp:NPC Fish ratio...

Think I need to do more math on Carp/Lu's.

    Re: Fishing

Quick question about the pelican ring. I have one and have used it for quite a while but am confused about how it works. Does it increase the skill up rate, (do u get skill ups faster) or does it just increase the amount of skill up you get, when you do get a skill up ( like getting .1, and .2 for one fish). I say this because I've only seen 2 skill ups per one fish, twice, and i'm like 65/180 on my ring.

    Re: Fishing

That's one more time than I've ever seen it. I've only gotten the double skillup on the same fish once. And I just started my second ring not very long ago.

For me, it seems like it increases how many I get per hour. When I used it in Talacca Cove, I remember getting a steady .2-.3 per hour. If I didn't use it, the number was typically lower.

The ring seems to be the only way I can get skillups at all on these horrible Pterygotus. I've never gotten one without it, and even with it, the skillups are horrendously slow.

Another question, I read somewhere that its possible to fish up the zone? Is this true? Like, can you fish up a certain fish so much that it takes a while for it to respawn, similar to mobs? Just curious

I've herd this too, there might even have been an update note about it. I believe it was an anti-RMT counter-measure. If there are very few people fishing it is unlikely to happen though, and probably resets at JP midnight?

    Re: Fishing

Hey slightly new fisher here with some slight questions.

I'm currently 240/10?000 on Lu shangs and I'm fushing and buying carps to get the rod. My question is should I go try to fish for Forest carps or go the Carp route?

I want to catch as many carps as I can per day so I can get the lu shangs asap since most of my free time in the game now is to fishing. I'm currently 11.7 fishing skill with gear.

    Thank you for advice ^^

    Re: Fishing

I've got a bit of a dilemma, and I was hoping someone could give me some input. I'm currently lv 81.2 fishing, working towards being able to get my Ebisu. I have been unable to get a Pelican ring so far, and the ranking contest started again today with... a Three-eyed Fish, something I can't skill on. So... heres the question: is it worth it for me at this point to take time to try to get a Pelican ring? It seems I can still get around 1 whole level a day fishing to fatigue @ Talacca, so I'm really not sure if giving that up for a while will be beneficial in the long run.

I wouldn't recommend forest carp personally, when I had to catch them for GP they moved around more than Ryugu Titans do >_>

@62 fishing right now and trumpet shells aren't giving any skill up, even with ring (wiki says they cap at 63... i beg to differ lol)

was wondering if anyone had a good place to skill up at? I am doing noble lady atm (66) but the skill ups are quite slow. Still trucking on w/out a lu'shangs XD

Aim for fish 10-20 levels or more above you for a better skillup rate. Basicaly the harder the better (asuming of course you can actually real it in and your cheap rod doesn't break. :P)

hehe, u know whats funny. I never had my cheap rods break at all until like 59 or 60. It was weird, I would always lose the bait, and not the rod. But since then i've broken my halcyon rod like 3 or 4 times so far. I use halcyon + minnow for noble lady's but I break my rod / lose the lure quite often. I think i just don't fish them regularly enough to tell when its another fish (either that or i'm not paying attention XD)

I might try the zebra eel? i think in den of rancor, not sure of the bite rate, my friend said it wasn't good... and that there are IT scorps down there but they're lvl 70 and I'm willing to give it a try.

Zebra eels fucking suck. I fished them once for GP item, was easily the worst fish ever. You HAVE to have sneak on the whole time or you die, it's anoying to recast espeshly when it starts wearing just as you're realing in a fish. For skillups you need something you can just sit down ncie and safe and do it while watching TV.

    Re: Fishing

What do you guys do to break up the monotony of fishing?

Currently spamming for Moat Carp by the little pond in Rolanberry and I get 180-194 a day but it takes 4 Hours to get this done and I'm running out of Music and Movies to pass the time...
Still have about 7k left 'til a Lu Shangs too.

You guys reckon I should just bite the bullet and stick it out or go to West Saruta pond and do Carp/Dark Bass until 30 or so to help pull in the Carp that little bit faster with a higher skill?

    1. Find some friends to chat with.
    2. Watch movie/anime/TV while waiting for the right fish to hook.
    3. Do housework
    4. Do homework
    5. Read a book.

Before the update, these used to be so much better but you get interrupted often now.

When I was at 60, I think I spent all my time in SSG doing bream and grimmonites. At some point I moved to Talacca Cove because you get the eastern analogs of those (mercanbaligi and ahtapot) and the sole analog as well (dil). Stayed there until 90. Dunno about the bite rate or rod breakage since I had a Lu when I did it. Used a shrimp lure.
