There isn't really a standard page to go to for checking fish limits, but generally going here, then checking the actual page for the fish, will give you an idea. Looks like you were close, though~

Well all you have to do is check the wiki and try it out. As far as I know the information is accurate.

Today is the first time I've tried it and it's definitely much worse than haks/ebisu fish in terms of line breaks. In my limited experience it's something like 1 fish per 3-4 line breaks.

I did check wiki... I even said that in my post. Was just wondering if it was accurate given different answer on another site. Or if both work which ones better etc

Which bait? Wiki most recommends carp slice which is a lvl 17 cooking synth using the most abundant fish in the game lol.

Well, the thing is, slice of carp only yields 2 bait per synth so that's out. Trout balls use trout or w/e the Aht Urhgan equivalent is, but yield 12 per synth. As far as I know, Windy is only source of carp while trout balls can be bought in Aht Urhgan too. Of course if anybody out there is thinking the same thing as you, they are probably 300+ each. Frog lure is out, and Rogue/Robber will never catch anything. Which leaves...

Ewww forgot it only gives you 2... and given moat prices that's kinda crazy for live bait. Well you can buy trout or the aht urghan equivalent pretty cheap at like 6 different places not sure how well they stock it though. If you mean all that that leaves is minnow what's so hard about that? I've been tribox fishing hak's with it for awhile now only buying from the windy guild and never seen them run out or go up in price. And theres a few other places to get them as well

I was just walking you through my thought process on how to select appropriate bait. There's nothing hard about it. Also I was differentiating between bait and lures.

I don't think I was mean at all. I said that the bait options (carp and trout balls) can be hard to get and that it breaks your line a lot. I also explained why bait might not be suitable anyway. What's so wrong about that? I know I could have just said minnow right off the bat, but the information really is out there and at that time I'd only caught a handful of them myself. Someone bought up all the sliced carp so I didn't have a chance to test that anyway.

I don't know though. In my experience, if a fish bites something, it'll bite everything at the same rate. For example, I think that if you fished Abaia in a controlled environment where only they bite, they would bite everything equally, rigs excluded of course. If this is the case, then all you want to do when picking your bait/lure is to choose something that other fish don't bite. This is how I understand it to be, perhaps somebody can refute that.

I wouldn't refute it so much as reword it. The rate at which a given fish will bite your line is determined as much by it's maximum bite rate as it is by how often competing biters will bite at it, reducing the desired fish's probability of being hooked.

So the bait selection process is about picking a bait your target fish will bite, is available, and ideally is something that will have fewer trash bites. For example, Minnows or Sinking Minnows for Haks; Minnows give a larger chunk of their bite rates to Cone Calamari/Bluetail/Squid than Sinking Minnows give to Black Sole, making Sinking Minnow the better bait (albeit a drop in the bucket more expensive, and a nuisance to get at since its vendors are on ferries).

Yes, I'd agree completely with that. If you eliminated all other fish, minnows and sinking minnows would be the same.

At 7500 per stack Sliced Carp doesn't look usable at all. I went out with 48 bait to Lake Mechieume, 6 bites, 5 snaps, 1 catch.
