1/249 on my main for Shaper's Shawl. I only had 250 fish, and it took me 5 months to get them, I started at zero and traded them all in today....I've been fishing Matsya off and on since I got it on my mule on 08/18/2012. I was looking forward to selling the leftovers to try to buy a Hexed Jacket -1 off Mafai.....

    WHAT THE FUCK ZALDON.

2012, september end of the month to december end of the month :

    4->110 fishing skill
3/3 fish ranking (with less 200 fish each time)
    1/3 fisher's torque
    1/5 gugrusaurus
    1/20 lik
    1/13 noddy ring
    1/25 puffin ring
    1/27 mercurial sword

I was really happy, I really thought Zaldon was my best buddy

    Until 2013 :
    0/146 matsya
    Still fishing it

    I hate you Zaldon f*cking betrayer !

What is the actual record on matsya ? Cause I have the feeling I'll beat it...

Someone in the thread claimed to know someone over 800, but that was like a month after the item was released, and I thought it was BS then, but never said anything about it.

At 1/249, the cost is almost 100,000,000. Wouldn't you need to spend 500,000,000 skilling up to cover the fees? Maybe that's not unreasonable since legion materials are 4-6,000,000 here.

Christ how much are Matsyas on your server. Would be closer to 65m here.

Have some data for sardine balls. Over 7 days of fishing for 6~7 hours a day with 100+9 skill, Puffin/Noddy Ring, and no other bonuses, I averaged 85 haks a day with an average of 45 breaks and an expenditure of an average of 1133 balls. 1 hak for every 13 balls on average.

Pro, is that pulling in and dropping items, or just pulling in haks?

My catch rate is definitely better than 1/13 at 110+12. Think closer to 1/9-10 dropping items. Been taking a break from it for a few days, but I'll start recording data again soon.

So some results in making minnows. Limited sample size I know but about to shift my methods so meh. For this I'm using 22.8 sec I've measured from synth to synth and been getting lightning clusters for 40k a stack and fire crystals for 4k a stack average and 68 gil per ring from npc. Obviously prices will vary by server and mine is odd in that it's way more expensive to buy fire clusters but a little cheaper to buy lightning clusters most the time. Also to note I'm 104 goldsmith using gear and megamog for the ingot desynth and fish megamog for fish. And for the fiber desynth I'm 70 +3 (hq support) alchemy. So mileage will vary

First is copper ingots. I've bought 700 rings. This took 978 synths and produced 578 ingots. About 6.2 hours to synth. Assuming about 1 sec each to buy that comes to about 6.5 hours cycle time and 319266 gil. Or about 40 sec and 552 gil each to make on average

So far 36 hours fishing has netted me 201 bugbear masks and 8 moblin. Which netted me 784 glass fiber in 283 synths. So total to make 784 glass fiber it took 37.8 hours and 78611 gil. So a little less than 2.9 min and 100 gil per fiber on average.

So overall per to perform 1 minnow synth it on average 4min and 985 gil.

No as I said I am in the process of changing how I obtain glass fiber. Well more like testing to see how good it could be. Specifically I'm CW burning tonberries in abyssea. The reason why it looks like I'm going to change is because 30 min was all me and I got exactly 30. So about 10 min per mask fishing or about 1 min per lantern farming. Not to mention I got a stack of dried mugwort in that time which sells for 50k and chance for dark rings etc.The average amount will probably be less based on values for nq/hqs but hard to say with breakage. So waiting on results which so farm look promising enough

Edit: So 52 lanterns and 82 desynths later produced 192 fiber. Small sample size but assuming 1 min per lantern farm and those numbers about 25 seconds and 118 gil per fiber on average. Slightly higher gil cost (could just be sample size and can easily make up for in other drops) and alot less time

Just as a rough guide, 4min and 985 gil to make 1 minnow.

Think I caught 100 sardines in about 5-6hrs? Say 6. Stack earth crystal cluster costs 80k, 558 per crystal. Horo Flour costs 36 gil, water costs 9 gil. Dunno how long 100 synths takes, say 38 mins, 368 minutes total, and 60,300 gil for 1200 bait. 1 sardine ball x12 synth taking roughly 3.68 minutes and 603 gil.

42.5 hours and 591k spent to make roughly 600 minnows.
36.6 hours and 362k spent to make roughly 7200 sardine balls.

I'll give you real data when I get back to fishing again, I just wanted to get a very rough ballpark comparison. I would say Sardine Ball:Hak ratio is about 1:9-10 roughly, say 1:10, and Minnows is around 2:3? You think that's fair? So looking at 900 Haks from minnows vs 720 from sardine.
    Roughly:
2Min 48Sec and 656 gil spent to catch 1 Hak with minnows
3Min 8Sec and 502 gil spent to catch 1 Hak with sardine

I can't stress enough how very ridiculously rough this is. However I think it could be quite fair to say the two methods will be close in effectiveness. I think Sardine Ball's main benefit compared to minnow synthing is setup cost. You're 100+ and 70+ in the two crafts you need. To make sardine balls you only need 31 fishing which is possible to reach in 1-2 days for less than 300k~.

Also, unless you have the means to store 600 minnows somewhere (which most wont) you're going not going to be able to do all that synthing in one big lump, you'll have to do a bit of each at a time, which means more time spent travelling. Whilst this is equally true for sardine balls, the travel time is hugely shorter (it only involves running between 2 zones and an AH in a starter city).

Finally, sardine balls is just a lot lot simpler - One fish to catch, one synth to make, and zero farming of materials. It's a much more casual approach I feel. (Good for me because my fishing mule is also my 2hm 2box which I use for almost everything I do alone).

And this is why I keep telling people to fish those with a mule. On a mule I can get 100 sardines in less than 2 hours. The bite rate is significantly higher with low skill, I don't know why.

100 sardines in 5~6 hours is pretty excessively long, probably a typo. I can get 350~450 in that time pending luck on doubles/triples which is enough fish for a week or so of haks

I'll agree most of that but travel time isn't that big of an issue with how close it is to warps. And. With bugbear mask I'm not farming materials either. That said if I wasn't triboxing the invent saving would be mighty tempting. Need more info on catch speed I suppose. Or convert my hak parses to times lol.

That said minnows you can farm lanterns like I'm starting to which looks like it will be much better if you want to go thru the work. And I sell sinkers for 10k though not sure if that's better than using them for me of course.

Might be that if a fish is really, really high enough on it's cap, the result ends up being a "no catch" instead a "holy shit, this is a fucking tough fish to pull in"?

Also, although sitting on one's rear in front of a vendor may seem easier- seriously. Go waltz around near/in Giddeus and obliterate the Yagudo en masse. Bang, piles of copper ingots with a goldsmithing cap of 1- and it's treated as a -synthesis-, not a desynth (ditto the grass thread w/wind, but who cares?) unlike virtually every beastman item out there. The resulting success rate is near 100%. Take any decent THF in. Tag a few Yagudo, run a lap around one of the big rooms, Cyclone the lot. Zap necklaces, melt down beastcoins if you're in the second-tier (Piper/Persecutor) or higher areas for silver ingots if you need them. Repeat.

I did this with an L50 THF/DNC- popped a Yagudo with a Flourish to get aggro and just booked with Flee down a few passages, turned around, stabbity-stabbity the resulting flock of birds, profit. Mind you, I also do it to slag down silver beastcoins and desynth anything promising for CC materials as well, but coming up with stacks of copper ingots is cake. Suppose you could do in Oztroja too, depending on your level- might be more profitable in terms of secondary goodies.

I'm on the hunt > vendor/fish side for gathering materials, though. If you've got lots of time- sure, sit there and fish up masks or desynth rings. Just feels faster going out there and killing something for what you need.

Oh missed it at first but 2:3 is the catch to hak bite rate but since lures aren't consumed on catch that means the 600 minnows will catch a little better than 1200 haks
