Might I ask the reason for wanting this exactly? There may be another solution

I'm not sure if anyone has bothered checking skillup rates between the 2. Though ahtapots being higher lvl they would probably be better once your lvl gets higher
Basically, but it's more 'why not?'-driven than anything else. I'll be NPCing pretty much once per day either way, so I figure that if only catching half of the possible options still ends with me meeting the fatigue cap but with ~120k worth the fish in my inventory instead of three stacks of mercs and 70 individual ahtapots, why not etc.

@Dasva I'm more or less insuring that I'm not misunderstanding any basic fishing concept. If there's something glaringly wrong about my conclusion, I figure you'll notice it

Oh no you got it right. iirc the bite rate between them was about the same so basically you would just double your fishing time but catch the same amount in the end. Was just figuring out the why. Though it sounds like that may not be forum friendly lol

The time factor is probably the confounding missing detail. If my playtime was valuable on days that I would do this, I'd be doing what would cap my rate in fewer real life hours.

    Thanks for the confirmation

My logs look like 2 seconds per ore bought. Seems high to me but that's what they say. And they cost 11 gil each. Fire crystal prices have gone up to 5k a stack sadly though still much cheaper than there clusters. (given the price you may want to farm. Just recently I was able to get almost 3 stacks of clusters in an hour of easy farming). So 30.8 sec per ingot synth and a cost of 460 gil. Now accounting for a 5% breakrate and assuming they are all worse case scenario full breaks that comes to 32.4 sec and 484 gil per ingot

Now the fiber is going to be a tad tricky. So far I've spent 3 hours and 40 minutes in abyssea farming for lanterns and gotten 208. This in turn I spent 276 synths to make them into 786 glass fibers. So total time spent synthing and farming should be about 324 minutes and given 40k per lightning cluster stack 76666 gil. However, also in that time I managed to get 8 dark rings (34476 npc price), 8 tower shields (4031 npc price) and 41 dried mugwort (sells 50k a stack). Completely ignoring the mugwort which for some reason stopped selling the day I started this I still made 308056 gil from those npcables (plus got myself a better dark ring). So in the end I spent 324 minutes to make 231390 gil and 786 fibers. So that comes out to each fiber taking 24.7 sec and making me 294 gil.

That puts each minnow synth at around 79.9 sec and a cost of 606 gil.

Some side notes the lantern farming is actually nowhere near as good as it could be. I haven't cleaved in over a year for 1 and I had minor amounts of competetion here and there. Plus Most the dark rings came from the last run when I got the bright idea to kill the garuda mob in area with sanguine blade for quick amber between cleaves. 1 big mistake I've make is not paying attention to what KIs I have/need. Could've been making a few sets. I know KKK skin is like 500-600k here and I tossed a few of the KI I need for it. However it's not as big as not keeping ffxiah open as last run I actually destroyed a box containing 2 helidors not realizing they sell pretty quickly at 160k each . So in reality if I hadn't been so dumb I might have almost broke even on actual cost. And of course trying to figure out why the mugwort stopped selling . And last side note using this method I can almost without a doubt say it is definitely worth selling the sinkers for 10k each lol. Doing the math would take an hours worth of time to make 45 with 9.4k profit would be 423k an hour lol. Yes yes I know I'm getting NQs too. But they are being used so the time making them isn't really counting against that and anyrate much better than using them. And yes I also realize I didn't really factor in the small amounts of running time and such. Partly because it's going to vary so much from person to person and largely because I've been busy doing other things so have spent too much time idle to really accurately time it. I'll probably do some run time tests and add that in to my results at a later date
So some questions because we need actual stats rather than "well I did this for a bit and did this but I coulda done this etc etc".

    • How many minnows does one round of all that farming/synthing give?
    • How much time is spent doing everything (including running to locations, trading mules, everything) for one round of synths?
    • How many haks do you get off how many minnows and how long does it take to catch them, leading to:
    • 80 seconds and 606 gil per minnow. How long and how much gil does this mean per hak?
    • How much of the process can be automated?
    • How much of the time spent gathering the bait before going fishing actually requires useer input?
    • What crafts are required, how long and how much gil does it take to reach the required levels?

This way we can accurately compare it properly and weigh up the two options properly. For comparison's sake, Sardine Ball fishing:
    • 1 round of synths: roughly 100 haks caught.
    • 1hr 10min for one round of synths.
    • 23:2 Bait:Hak ratio. 9min10sec per hak caught.
    • Total: 9 minutes 10 seconds and 620 gil per Hak.
    • Of the 1hr10min prep time, 1hour of that (synthing, buying materials) can be automated.
    • 10mins of active user input required, roughly 6 seconds of active use input required per hak.
    • Crafts required: fishing 28-31, setup cost: <1day <300k.

But the general result that actually matters:
6 seconds of required user input required per hak.
9 minutes 10 seconds total time to catch one hak.
620 gil spent to catch one hak.

My initial thoughts is that Minnows will cost less gil per hak, but will require more user input time. I don't know how the two will compare in total time to catch one hak.

Edit: I can however quite confidently say I will never resort to synthing minnows because of the amount of time spent actually doing a repetitive task like farming the materials. I hate grinding the same repeated boring shit (it's why I hate dynamis) and Sardine ball all but negates any aspect of that.

There is a fair amount of stats in that lol but heres some sorta answers for now. Or why explanations of why your questions wont have as percise of answers and why I went with averages per synth and such. And some this will just be ideas till I can get home and actually run around and do better math

The first going to be hard since I break it up. There's a few reasons but mostly it's more efficient to farm as many lanterns as you can. But that produces way more fibers than you can use unless you have some ridiculous storage available. Plus as you mentioned some like tomorrow take breaks and do other stuff

Again given the nature of it having bridge synths and farming it's not going to work out as 1 round. To figure that out I'd realy have to add run times to each stage and approximate how many sessions for each stage. Though the fiber part will be easy as that is just 3 sessions. But do to invent reasons how many minnows I made and therefore how many ingots I synth and therefore time for that session is going to vary some. Also hq/nqs going to mess with it since I obviously only take 1 kind of bait with me when I go fish

I have parse numberw for the rates just not times. Wondering how best to go about that since would require a rather decent sample size and deals with varying fatigue on 2 lures no less.

I don't know if there is something that can effectively farm the lanterns so I'll say that part isn't. So if you really can't afford an hour farm session every few days then yeah just fish up masks. However everything else can be automated. Which pretty much answers the user ino ut question

The last question is pretty hard though. You only technically need 31 alchemy and 11 gold but it would probably be best to have higher alchemy for the desynth portion. I'm only 70 so anyone can get my numbers. However alchemy mains might do better on the desgnth and will hq alot more on the minnows. Trying to figure out how much it's going to cost to get there seems a bit excessive and highly dependent on the individual, the server and just what is selling.

Some questuons for you too. What kind of sample size we talking about for your results. Total bait used and fish caught and time soent catching exactly. What fishing setup. Ie still gear and furniture. And in your fishing times do you include running to npc npcing trading and running back as well.

Ok got some stuff to add some time in. Time to get gear get to cleave spot warp back degear and get to alchemy guild where I like to do the desynthing was 13 min. Given 3 farm sessions that adds another 39 minutes so brings that portion to a total of 363 and the average time per fiber to 27.7 seconds (woot add 3 seconds). That said I actually quit early one run so really it could be a second lower!!!

As I kinda mentioned the next stage is kinda odd so I ended up deciding to basically break it up into making enough to send my mule with a certain amount of the same type of bait. That being I generally send my mules out with 60 bait. Since I'm not alchemy main I can only achieve 25% hq rate which means to get 60 minnows I'd end up making 20 sinkers as well. Since I make ingots usually right before I make minnows I'll put travel to where I do ingots/trade my mules into the next stage and assume I'm just making enough ingots for how many minnows I'm going for. So with this in mind let's go to the ingot stage.

Using the math from before the actual synth time to get those 80 ingots should be 43.2 minutes. I timed it to be 2 minutes to warp to jueno then get to npc in port jueno since I do it for 2 mules instead of doubling everything else I'll just halve this so add 1 min so 44.2min to get ingots needed.

Given the average time to make a fiber 80 would on average take 36.9 min and 80 synths would be 30.4 min. So total time to time for a session would be approximately 110.5 min.

Now as I mentioned I just send my mules off with 1 type of bait. If anyone is curious that's because no satchel so don't want to run out of bait. Needles to say putting bait and taking it out of mh does take time. So I factored in 4.25 min to trade those 80 bait and then putting the sinkers into mh. So total time for runs I fish with minnows ends up being 114.75. But after 3 runs I end up with enough in mh to just pull them out and fish with them. I timed it to be 2 min to get them out and get back to the warp npc. So three 114.75 min runs and one 2 min run comes out to a total of 346.25 min for 4 fishing runs of 60 bait each. (For those who might think some of these details might seem not important now but will go into when I compare to values I get for catch per hour and nice to reference it on here).

So basically that will come to 86.5 seconds per bait including all the running and buying etc. In case anyone is wondering i purposely haven't added the time to get from fishing spot to npc then npcing it and then getting back to fishing spot as that's more of a cost of the fishing itself and this way can figure out how much it's worth it to sell/buy bait with.

As I write this it occurs to me that you could always bazaar stuff while synth (this goes for both methods) but it saves you like what 3 seconds a synth at most lol. Also considering going to ships to synth while waiting and such. But factoring the math into that would be kinda bleh. If anyone else can think of anything to add to the efficient (time and or gil) I'm all ears.

As far as catch speed I'd like to focus on a mule that has as close to same fishing setup as noodles so going to wait on what he is using before parsing catch speed

Edit: Almost forgot the how much of it is not automated part. I suppose it depends on what you use. All the running and buying and synth can be automated so that really leaves trading and moving invent and the cleaving times. Based on the time spent cleaving compared to how many lanterns I ended up with 16.8 seconds of a fiber synth is none automated. Out of the 346.25 min session time 14.75 were spent transferring and trading so 3.7 sec per minnow. So basically 20.5 of the 86.5 seconds is non automated. A little less than half that if we go by per hak

Couldn't you just note down your start time, and then check the log files for the last successful catch? Would give you X haks in Y time with Z lures.

The fishing time includes only time spent at beaucedine actually fishing, and time spent preparing ingredients. It doesn't include time spent running to/from beau and selling haks to the shop,as those should be very similar (if not identical) for each method.
As mentioned my sample size is small, I would have continued to add to it, but I haven't been fishing recently. It is currently inaccurate but obviously it's accuracy will grow as I continue to add more results to it.
Have Fishing stall, Waders, Smock, Torque, AH hands+legs, noddy and puffin for 112 skill. Don't have The Big One or any other fishing furniture.

The above (to stress: small sample size, to act as a starting point) numbers result from (as posted above) 103 haks in 14hr 45mins off 1188 bait. As I start fishing again I'll simply add the total time, total bait, and total haks caught to this total.

Really looking forward to amassing a decent sample of data for gil/time:hak for both methods and comparing, should be interesting. Might go fishing tonight, depends how late I finish up in abyssea ungimping my new mule >.>

I just hit 53 on Istridye (last three levels were incredibly fast, like 40 catches to get 3 full levels - Makes me wonder if there's a huge skillup boost for fishing near the cap). What setup do I need for Tavnazian Goby?

I can but I don't have actual log files except for most recent stuff. For the data I've collected I just got rates and such. So yeah if I can get catchs over time I would be able to figure out lures from that.

True same total time so the value of the time difference would be the same. But the ratio would differ a little which may be useful comparison
Hmmm none of my characters have torque but I suppose the difference shouldn't be big enough to mess with the results. Just gotta make sure not to use my 100 character. Hmmm my main would be closest but it doesn't fish much anymore do to bait making and ah camping... arggg

Noodles did you pull up items with those numbers? I've done quite a few sessions with sardine balls and I've seen numbers like that on occasion but that seems to be on the better side of the spectrum for me. Many times I'll have used more like 14-15 stacks for 100ish hakuryu; same gear as you, releasing items.

I reel in and drop items, yes. The first time I tried I released items and got a similar catch rate to what you say you get

Where should I be trying to fish Gobys? In Lufaise at the central pond (Leremieu Lagoon), I notice that I get quite a few monsters, crap items, and Dark Bass with Halcyon/Minnow. Also, I successfully pull up Gobys.

Leremieu was where I got them. It sounds silly but sometimes there's "dead spots" around a fishing spot where you wont pull up a specific fish (catfish at jugner lake I'm looking at you), so if you haven't caught some in a dozen casts move a bit.

I did my mule on the south bridge right outside Tav (VW tele). I think I did Mithran/Minnow so I could skill up on "too small" catches. (Not 100% on the rod, sorry.)

Awesome, getting a lot of them there. I'm actually able to pull them up sometimes, though.

I guess it's worth noting that you can do the same thing with Istridye in Nashmau by using a Composite Fishing Rod (+Rogue Rig) instead of Halcyon. I figured out that switching my rod like this is why I ended up getting 3 levels of skill in 40 catches.

Someone should write up a non-Lu guide, there's definitely a lot of questions around the topic

This is all I've done so far:

    Stage 1: Istiridye ( 40-27-13 )
    Fishing Levels: 0-53
    Area: Nashmau
Rod: Composite Fishing Rod (too small) / Halcyon Rod (pulls them in)
    Bait: Rogue/Robber Rig
Notes: These are incredibly easy to reel in and stack. They NPC for ~300 gil.

    Stage 2: Tavnazian Goby ( 160-30-7 )
    Fishing Levels: 53-75
Area: Lufaise Meadows (Bridge near south exit)
Rod: Composite Fishing Rod (too small) / Halcyon Rod (pulls them in)
    Bait: Minnow
Notes: These are also incredibly easy to reel in and stack. They also NPC for ~300 gil.

I'll note that at the moment my bite rate against Gobys sucks though (Composite/Minnow). I'd estimate maybe a 33% bite rate or less.

How often did Ist break your line at full depletion?
