Never... well, I only used Composite from 50->53, but I did 50->53 in one sitting without any problems and then followed it up with another 160 catches despite getting the "too small" message because I wasn't paying attention to the fish level cap.

Alright wth am I doing wrong. I'm down by the water at H-10 in Oldton trying to fish up bugbear/moblin masks with a Sabiki rig without rings or smock and for the last 17 minutes I've either gotten a ghost crab or no bite.

What are you trying to fish up? Because if it's Armored Pisces, you should be using minnow or meatballs

It sucked for me with Sabiki when I tried it, too. I got better results with the Fishing moghancement (go go rusty buckets) and a Shrimp Lure. I also keep Noddy Ring on, personally. No idea if it makes a difference. It's still pretty slow, imo. If you're willing to put in some effort, go for Tonberries in Abyssea.

I use blu for farming tonberries. Partly cause cleaving is easy partly cause I don't like eatting grudges

I think I did robber and I kept on of the rings on. That said yeah they can be real streaky. Go 60 casts with no bite catch a few in a row. I'm pretty sure I have parse data somewhere in the last several pages

Just as a question for the future, if FFXIDB wanted to collect fishing stats that would rule out previous superstition, what would it need?

So far I have come up with this list:

About the fisherman:
1) Timestamp (Moon phase, vana'time, day of the week, etc.)
2) Moghancement: Fishing
3) Equipment (including rod and bait)
4) Position in the zone (aka which body of water you are fishing from)
5) Heading (direction you're facing when you cast your line)
6) Fishing skill level
~~7) Time fishing? - I have no idea how they would monitor fatigue~~

About hooking the fish:
1) Fish code for bites (given a specific rod/bait combo)

About the results
1) Fish that are pulled up (related to fish code)
2) Non bites
3) Breaks (line and rod)

If you're bot fishing overnight, the only real advantage to lu's is the greater npc price of nashmau/talacca(sp?) cove fish in the 53-75 stage compared to gobys unless I'm missing something.

I remember mathing it out, and I would have made around 1m in the npc price difference in the time it took me to get through that skill range with rings (I got 2 characters top 20 in giant catfish ranking using composite rod lol, while skilling on them), but lu's AH price tanked more than that in my time from 0-78, so it was a wash.

For fishers make sure it's exact position. Different spots on the same body of water can have different results at least from what I and some fishers have seen. Possibly additional furniture. Food effects.

As far as fatigue that might be a toughy. You could record catches since last jp midnight and get that part but I don't know if anyone has quantified the effects of zone fatigue. You could use time between pulling line in till next cast but casting doesn't show up in logs and Thatcher would have to assume everyone is casting

However you could probably do something about capped fatigue since data past that point would be bad. Oh different fishing rings too

If you're looking for the least effort, just do sardine balls. Much less effort than minnows. Whether its better or not still yet to be seen, but its certainly easier.

That reminds me while rather early imo I got as many hours as yours and nice to see where things are trending maybe. Anyways using similar gear setup to yours minus 3 skill (btw you said you have 112 skill while having +12 in gear/mog does that mean your base skill is still 100 or typo?) I've caught 203 in 24 hours and 40 minutes. So looks slightly faster catch rate as thought but really both our samples might be too small to say that for sure.

Oh and side note for purposes of comparing it to other stuff like how many minnows it took or bites or whatever this would be character 2 from my parses

With all this talk about leveling fishing w/o a Lu... is there a reason to keep one? I just picked up an Ebisu for my husband's account on Sunday, so my three mains have it. I only have one mule leveled (thanks crafting torques) high enough to fish w/o hitting the 20/day limit. Selling the Lu won't get anything in itself - not going to finish a REM stage or anything - but it's not a terrible chunk of change.

Thoughts?

Depends is that mule on a different account and do you run all the accounts at once? If so might be nice to help it lvl faster if you wanted to. If not no real point in lvling it since no point fishing on it over the ebisus

Does it actually help you level faster? Does it improve bite rates or something? I just see it costing ~6mil and can't figure out why, when Ebisu materials cost about (or a little less than) that much on average.

I'm getting about 0.6 levels/hour with Composite at the moment (53+), no zoning. I'm 62.5 now (was 53 two days ago and haven't been fishing constantly). In another two days I should cap out on Gobys. Then I guess it's 3 levels in Port Jeuno on Black Sole -> rank up for Ebisu's (Inventory Space +2). After that, I'll probably never cap out and will leave everything in the MH forever.
