    1. Is it supposed to be possible to pull up a fish that high? (I was between 14 and 15 skill.) Do you ever get a skill too low message and, if so, how does that work?

    2. Is it worthwhile for me to pull them in - ie, can I get skill off pulling in a fish that high level?

    Thanks!
1)Yes you can fish anything up at skill 1(almost). It is slower but the Lu shang gives you so much time and lowers their HP much faster. You also might get more *lack of skill* being that much lower

2)you can get skill ups from anything. Many think that you get better rates as you close in their skill cap.

I myself did skill up to 60 befor i went and started to make gil. At that point I just started to fish squids for gil. Making tones of money with slow skill up rates.

Man i miss the days of 20-30k per fish ; ; and making like 6mil a day off fishing lol

Yea, what dejet said in response to those questions.

Also, fishing I have found is all about lag ~ meaning, the more lag you can create for your game, the easier it is to fish up pretty much anything (sans fish breaking your lu shangs). Glad SSG worked out for you. The only setback of that place is inventory - you need quite a bit IF you are keeping Grimmonites, if you are not bringing them up and just fishing nebs and bream, you can stay there until your fatigue sets in pretty much.

I agree with the Armored Pisces option. They're at Lv. 100, and incredibly easy to pull up (for me at least) Also, the bite rate on them is MUCH better than Pterygotus.

The only thing is, you'd have to warp out to sell your catches to NPC, then hike back to Oldton Movalpolos, but hey....better bite rate, more chances at skill up far outweighs low bite rate any day in my book.

Have to warp to npc Cave Cherax too, but atleast we have satchels now. If you have 58 WHM/BLM or 75BLM/WHM you can teleport-dem > gusgen mines > oldton movalpolos > escape > then walk back in and you are not too far from the fishing spot.

Well, if I EVER get my freaking security token, that's exactly what I'm going to do with all my catches.

    2 quick questions:
    1. For pterygotus is the best bait lugworms or a sinking minnow lure?
    2. As for armored pisces did anyone start these earlier like maybe at 96 if someone went the dil route instead of ptergotus? I also wanted go verify sinking minnow is the best bait to use?

Yes, Lugworms will single out the Pterygotus in Nashmau, so that is the best bait. I believe Sinking Minnow will also snag some Ahtapot, and the ToAU version of Gold Lobster, IIRC.

As for Armored Pisces, I started on them as soon as I hit the Mercanbaligi cap at 86. They're cake to pull up, and Sinking Minnow single-targets them as well.

This is gonna seem like such a newb question but, the further apart from your desired fish you are, is the bite-rate far greater?

I was in Talacca Cove for shit and giggles, wanting a break from Shalls, and I was next to some JP Fisher who was reeling in Ahtapots, Dils and those Mercithingies every time he casted; same setup as me, LuShang/Shrimp. Yet I cast about 40 casts and got 6-7 bites; could this be because my skill is a crappy 48 and his a shitton higher?

    Just wondering?!

I went at 53 and had decent bite rates, it seemed like mostly Dil's that were annoying as hell. Even with albatross they sucked so I just went back to Nash. Some people say skill has something to do with bite rate, but I didn't really see a difference in the eastern shall shell bite rate from 25-53ish. Then again, dil's are like 50 levels higher.

Thanks for the replies on my earlier 2 questions. One more and I'll stop being so needy: Has anyone taken a different route from the high 90's to 100 and done it with Liks? I know some people said Lik's are doable with just albatross. Maybe .3 skill ups from legendaries and progress towards ebisu would be another option?

My wife is at 95+5 fishing and was working on Liks first since she had serpent rumors and I didnt. Would be lucky to get a skillup on some nights (using pelican and albatross rings). Using 2 rings (penguin and albatross) on the ferry we seemed to get more skillups off Gugrusaurus.

Ahh from reading some other replies here I didn't realize it was possible to pull Gugs in with just Albatross, I thought you also needed the other one that depletes stamina faster. Good news there.

edit: oh damn just notice liks and gugs both break lu, I don't have WW so I'd have to dbox to a friend. Does it break often?

Well, I went and did a 1hr 45min fishing session in Oldton Movalpolos using Lu and Sinking Minnow catching Armored Pisces.

    Armored Pisces caught - 45
Charges on Pelican Ring used - 4 or 5 (don't remember, was sleepy)
Pelian Ring skill up procs (the double skill up thingy) - ZILCH! NADA! ZIP! NONE!
Any skill ups at all? - .2 up on Fish #39 caught. .1 up on Fish #41 caught.

Those were the first fishing skill ups I've had in nearly 2 months of fishing in Oldton Movalpolos semi-regularly (maybe 2 or 3 times a week) in 1.5 or 2hr session. I was NEARLY about to call a to allow fishing skill ups to occur on my account again. LOL

one night fishing lik i hade 6 breaks back to back to back to back to back to back. made me go nuts lol

with 99 skill i think its something like

    20% break
    30% line snaps
    5% skill lose
    45% you will get.

they seem to break random and it gets you really mad when it happens a lot

Yea, Lu shangs breaks are really random for me. When i'm fishing for marlin for pirate chart, and hook a titan, i've gone 8/8 on titans on a single leg of that trip, and i've gone 0/4 with 3 line breaks and a rod break. In the last 6 titans i've hooked, 5 have broken my rod and I caught the other. Crappy thing is, I usually hope my buddy is online who I can d-box my broken rod to and he'll fix it, if not, its a long trek for me to the desert.

As soon as I got the satchel I jumped to Cave Cherax @94~. Bite rate seems random crap, somedays is great and others just sux (over than 20 back to back "didn't cath"). But I love them for some reasons.

Random 0.3, in a fishing session (3~4h) I got 4 0.3 and 1 0.2, which is just awesome (Pelican full time too). Of course others days I got nothing, but Pterygotus never gave me more than 0.2, mostly 0.1's. Also if you are not going for the key item to catch Lik/Gugrus (Moching?) with the rare/ex bait, they sell pretty well to NPC.

Edit: And as for Lu breaks, I only broke 1 in 10~ days fishing Cherax. I didn't fish any other Lu-breaker fish yet, so I'm not sure if this break/rate is normal or just my luck.

Edit2: Oh and no monsters to catch as well.
