I tried Istiridyes for a bit with a rogue rig, and they're okay. But I caught about four stacks the other night and didn't get a single skill up. I know fishing is random, and you can expect those stretches, but that seemed pretty excessive for level 47. It makes me wonder if the skill cap for those was ever verified to be the same as Shall Shells (which I fished on my old mule ages ago in Bubu).

I'm able to land Mercanbaligi and Ahtapot pretty well, and the money makes those worth it. I may just stick with those until I get to the more common range for them. Can't beat the convenience of fishing there.

Shit varies. I had one night where I fished over 100 and didn't get a single skill up, and then another day I got like almost 5 entire levels.

Istiridyes to 53 are your best bet imo. After that, I personally prefer Talacca over Nashmau.

Also, for some reason I REALLY enjoy ferry fishing, Marlins give pretty decent/ok skill up (61 cap), but they're really rare. I think out of all the marlins I've ever caught since hitting level 30 (im level 61 now, about 200 marlins total) I gained somewhere around 1.3-1.8 levels off of em, and also got a merc kris out of it. Probably not the best "skill up route", but for casual stuff, it's extremely fun, and can lead to good profit and decent skill on top of it.

I'm currenly 47.6, looking for a good spot. I had been fishing in Qufim for calamary, bluetail, and the occasional squid. But I've been supplementing that with fishing in Nashmau before Einherjar, with mixed results. The money in Nash is good, but the skillups haven't been awesome.

I hate hate hate catching Bluetail. Way too bitchy for a fish that low. Any suggestions on other places in that level? I've read the guides and know about the usual places- I was more thinking of out-of-the-way, unusual places for a change of pace. Any suggestions? I have a Lu.
Trumpet shells are your friend, quite possibly one of the best money making fish in game as they sell so damn fast on AH and take so little skill to reel in.

Ah thank god.. 2 days ago I turned in my last Moat Carp. Thank all of you guys who contributed to my first post about where to fish for the damn thing. I am so sick of moat carps.

Finished the rod at skill level 50 on the dot, and in the time I started till finished the Lu accumulated 74,000 GP. So if nothing else, that Lu quest nearly got me Serpent Rumors :D. At 50 I ran to Tallaca Cove and finished my first Lu Shang's night with 6 stacks of Dil and a ton of Merc/Ahta's. Onward to Ebisu! (Also got to 51.2 that same night :3)

I have to agree with those saying Tallaca is a better locale than Nashmau, I'm pretty good at Stamina Fishing so I don't get monsters and with a cooking 100 buddy we're going 50/50 on the sushi, not a bad spot at all :D

From a lil guide I wrote for my lsmates on our forums:

    Stage 1: Istiridye
    Fishing Levels: 27-53
    Area: Nashmau
    Bait: Robber Rig
Notes: These are incredibly easy to reel in and stack. If you are a bit patient they will sell on the AH for 7k a stack, or find a high level bonecrafter who synths them into black pearls and sell to them directly for a negotiable price. They also NPC for 300ish gil. I made 70k my first day just NPCing these while racking in a couple fishing skill levels from 30-33ish. I currently dbox them to a high level bone friend for 5k a stack.

    Stage 2: Mercanbaligi & Ahtapot
    Fishing Levels: 53-86
    Area: Nashmau
    Bait: Shrimp Lure
Additional Location: Tallaca Cave, W exit of Nashmau through Caederva Mire near Einherjar entrance.
Notes: A friend prefers Tallaca Cave, the difference is in Tallaca you will also fish up Dil's which you will not in Nashmau. NPC rates seem to vary on these from about 600g on Mercs to 700-1.1k on Ahtapots. Mercs are the Eastern equivalent of Bastore Breams and Ahtapots are the Eastern equivalents of Grimmonites.

Nash skill ups were insane for me, but I was fishing 150-200 fish a day, and averaging 2-3 levels a day. If I have one bit of advice it's win a pelican's ring. It'll make your skilling ridiculously fast.

Just curious, is there a reason why you recommend starting mercanbaligis & ahtapots at 53? I was doing istiridyes for a while in nashmau, till lately when i discovered at 26 i was able to rig in mercans and ahtapots, have been doing them since and they seem really easy to reel in and of course the gil is alot nicer!

Bite rate on istiridyes is A LOT higher, also, I don't know what you're doing but, without slowing down my pc, I wasn't able to reel in mercanbaligi/ahtapots very well without an albatross ring at 53.

So in order to achieve the ultimate tier 3 + DELICIOUS PERMA PENGUIN RING effect, i should be looking at:

Aura strength 10, Fisherman's Signboard (Fishing skill) x1
    Aura strength 9, 9-Drawer Almirah (Water) x 10
Aura strength 5, The Big One (Fishing skill) x1

this will put signboard at rank 1, which is a 10 aura strength item, giving me fishing skill moghancement
total element strength is 105, giving me tier 3 overwhelming energy
the big one will allow me to move this tier 3 moghancement into moglification, giving me the full power

yay? or nay? correct me pls, im very eager to know this
Neat, I never knew about this.

I had a water aura of about 63, so I ended up buying 5 cabinets to get myself to 100+ (overwhelming).

The reason I'm replying to your post instead of Urat, though, is because I found it a lot more affordable to buy the cabinets than the 9-drawers. 5k vs. 50k, both offer +9 water element. Cabinet has less storage, but I already had capped storage, so it doesn't really matter.

FFXIAH.com lists the cabinet as having moghancement: fishing (item), but SE changed it to moghancement: Water a while back.

Edit: I already have signpost and The Big One, so I have Moglification: Fishing with this setup.

I'm curious to know if you notice a difference in depletion rate after the "upgrade?"

I went over to Vunkerl Inlet to fish up a couple Trumpet Shells with my Lu after setting up my furniture (I have 100 skill, wore gloves, pants, waders, apron). There wasn't any weather going on (having weather is good for trumpet shell bites), and I didn't want to stay on XI much longer as it was, so all I did was catch two of them. Didn't notice anything amazingly different...or any difference at all, really.

Of course, it was only two shells, which is hardly a good sample size. It was also 100% full moon, and watersday, if that makes a difference.

Could be I've simply gotten used to having Moglification + strong aura, and I don't notice the small step to Moglification + overwhelming aura, if it is indeed only a small improvement.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help

    Try 279.

I mentioned a few days ago that I did this testing.

Edit: Ah, I see what you were saying. I thought you were "challenging" my strategy, when in fact you were simply modifying your statement. My apologies!

    haha np ^^

anyway, both my ID hit skill 90.........

and for fucking sake, skill up rate at 90 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyy lower than i get from 0-89 lol

so i guess, my real fishing quest begins here.....
0-88: 2-3 skill per day average
    89-90: 1 entire day(all 0.1s from ahtapots and dils)
90-90.3: 2 days fishing ptroy in nashmau..............jumped to black sole awhile, for 3 hours, 5 stacks of black sole, and all i got was 0 skill ups.

    all with pelican ring

    yea just checked cabinets :D

10x7 = 70 storage + enough strength to get overwhelming

    also 10x cheaper!!!

    thanks for the heads up

I'm in the same boat (pun intended) as jualiano was. I have a fast pc and even slowing it down made ahtapots difficult in the mid 50's. I admit I couldn't wait to finish the istiridye wtage then when I was done I missed their ease and bite rate lol. If you can manage talacca or ahtapots/mercs earlier go for it whatever works for you. I also had a BCEr who bought them all for 5k a stack so it was nice. I couldn't handle talacca easily until the 70's using a decent slowdown method since there seemed to be less lag there than Nash.

That's really weird- I find I have no trouble bringing in ahts and mercs at 47, although obviously istiridyes are easier. I also have a fast PC, so it's not the lag making it easier for me. Maybe I just got better by wasting all that time on bluetails, lol.

I'll check out trumpet shells, and maybe supplement those with istiridye up to 53. Definitely working on my pelican ring, but not having much luck yet.

Thanks for the advice, guys. ^^

    Nanana lol

You use trumpet shells between istiridye and mercs to broach that 30 level gap. Trumpet shells are 60 something as I recall.

The bite rate isn't that great on shells but holy crap the skillups are fast. 50-60 took me like 3 days or so, fishing to cap every day.

Just fishing there I'd generally get almost 200 a day, which is about 17 stacks or so, at 20K/stack you're looking at well over 300K in shells a day, while skilling. It takes a lot of effort to just stop catching the shells even when your capped on em and move onto mercs, the money is that great.

Also, if you've leveled up bonecrafting to 100, you can make even more money by taking out the middle man and making the rings yourself, + make some profits off the HQs :D
