Lol I just fished up a Llamhigyn Y Dwr.. fuck

Guess I'm gonna start cancelling those uncertain ones, this one wasn't degening at all, but it also wasn't regening like ahtapots usually do, guess I should have used that as an idication

edit: oh and uh, I have a Lu Shang's <_< 32k GP away from key item, can I do it in 8 days!? That's an average of 4k GP a day.. maybe if I get lucky, will probably have to wait 2 weeks for my ebisu though :/

Hehe, I think I fished up one of those guys when I was skilling up there. Stamina regen/degen can be tricky, because when you reach a certain skill level, Ahtas and mobs will appear similar in their stamina behavior.

However! There is a very simple way to tell whether you have hooked a mob, vs. hooked an ahtapot, based on the behavior with which both fight. It's been a while, so I can't give you the exact timing of it, but ahtapots, when hooked, let the rod rest in the center for a second or two at the beginning of the fight. Mobs, when hooked, immediately swing left/right.

Also, I think for the duration of an ahtapot fight, whenever the rod reaches the center, it will remain there for exactly 1 second, each and every time (may not be one second...I don't recall). I forget how this differs from monster behavior (I think the time the rod spends in the center is very brief), but just keep an eye out for it.

I'm sure you already know the breakdown of messages, where "Don't know" = 99% mob, "Fairly Sure" = 50%/50% chance of mob/fish, and "Positive" = 99% fish (based on an old guide by Akrius, which, while outdated, was/still is a great guide for all things fishing).
    Allakhazam.com: Final Fantasy XI
However, by simply observing Ahta/Monster behavior, you can hook Ahtapots each and every time! You'll pick up on it very quickly!

I was quite proud when I find this out myself, heh. I felt like a "true fisherman," being able to tell the difference between fish and mob just by observing the rod (or for that matter, just by listening!).

Edit: For the record, I've spent most of my time in the Titanictus.com forums for the past few years, so this thread is relatively new to me. I think I'll have to spend some time going through this whole thread to make sure I'm not repeating what someone said five pages ago

and for fucking sake, skill up rate at 90 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyy lower than i get from 0-89 lol

so i guess, my real fishing quest begins here.....
0-88: 2-3 skill per day average
    89-90: 1 entire day(all 0.1s from ahtapots and dils)
90-90.3: 2 days fishing ptroy in nashmau..............jumped to black sole awhile, for 3 hours, 5 stacks of black sole, and all i got was 0 skill ups.

    all with pelican ring
90 plus I'm having good luck with Pelican + ptroy's, but it comes and goes. Some days I'll be @0, some days I'll get like 1.1 after a day of fishing... I'd just keep at it

    Definitely slow, though :/

    @ Juliano

If I hooked a !!! without terrible feeling I'd just touch nothing for 3 seconds, if the stamina bar depleted naturally it was a mob, if it stayed topped at 100% it was an ahtapot.

I just tried it out now, and yeah, it's really noticeable, mobs seem to just go left/right without stopping at the middle, and ahtapots always stop in the middle for about a second.

I guess it kinda depends a bit on what kind of fishing I'm doing though, I usually just hit up Talacca for <1hour inbetween events or something (and these sessions usually end up giving me the most skill up, go figure <.<) and I'm usually really focused on those runs, don't usually pull up monsters.

I hardly ever reach my fish cap for the day, usually around 70~100 a day, sometimes more sometimes less, but since I'm making a push to get 32kGP and 78 before next Sunday so I can get my Ebisu, I'm trying to sit here and actually hit my cap, so I'm watching a bunch of youtube videos while fishing to keep myself entertained so I'm not really focused which doesn't help with avoiding monsters lol

edit: just hit 64! 62>>64 today and about halfway to fatigue cap.

    Question...

I don't have the Signpost, but I do have "The Big One" in my Mog House. If I got 7 or so Cabinets, would that still give me the type of Moghancement: Fishing that I want?

With my current setup I have Moghancement: Fishing (increases skill) but the aura strength is a notch below overwhelming.

    Any help is appreciated.

The big one only has a strength 5, so cabinets will overpower it and force water if that's what it has been changed to.

Go here, and about 80% down Moghancements - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more you will need to find water powered items with less than 5 strength. I'm going to use about 25 water barrels once I can nab my lsmate to synth them, theyre pretty cheap ingredient wise.

To a point, this is true, but once you obtain a certain level of fishing skill, both ahtapots and mobs will automatically deplete stamina. I forget how many levels you have to be above the fish for this to occur, but it does happen. Of course, you can compensate by taking off pieces of fishing gear, so you will again be at a skill level that lets ahtapots retain their stamina when doing nothing.

Also the message you get when fishing a !!! is a hint as well. If you grab a !!! and the stamina bar doesn't deplete naturally always check the message. "You have a good feeling about this one!" is a good indicator that you have a monster. I believe that the higher level your fishing skill the more accurate your instinct is with these messages when it comes to monsters.

At 54 for me its rather easy to identify an ahtapot from a monster, as the bar refills when I don't tap, but for lower level big fish for GP I always check 1) Stamina Depletion, and if it stays constant check 2) the message I got below the !!!. If its a good feeling, I drop the line. Works pretty well for me.

Also, you can use ye old ancient method for determining the fish.

Ye old sweat drops! There are a variety of up to, if I recall correctly, 5 sweat drops, telling you much more accurately what the fish is.

The key factors to look for are: Size, this tells you how big it is, not very useful now since the introduction of music/!/!!!

How many: More there are, the more "tougher" the fish is, this is the equivalent of the estimation message. Not as useful BUT sweat drops are never wrong :D

By 90s your messages have become pretty accurate, but in the earlier levels they just be whatever they wanna be, sweat drops on other hand don't lie.

A master baiter will use the combination of sweat drops, exclamation marks, message, stamina, and behavior to tell exactly what fish it is.

On another note: fishes behavior changes depending on your rod yo, I've definitely noticed Dils calmed the fuck down when I swapped from lus to ebisu. They hung left and right and in middle more and headfaked a lot less.

    Man I'm such a nerd >.o

Bitch about your skill up rate!! No seriously. I moved to Sole from Pterygotus (cause I thought they were slow) before I made my previous posts on Thursday, and got all of 3x .1s in over 150 fish. Moved back to Pterygotus and got 1.1 levels yesterday w/ Pelican Ring, with no double skills.

yea i moved back to ptery as well

0 skill yesterday fishing 2 hours

sleep > wake up > brush teeth > fish and got 1.1 (with ring)!!!

wife ID stuck at 91.9 for 4 hours, and then i dc, come back, fish w/o ring and got 0.3 in 2 fishes......

talk about randomness at its best....

anyone notice the coincident 1.1 skills?.....

Which brings up an interesting question: If Phanauet Newt gets chosen as the Amateur level GP fish, are ya gonna do it? :O A whopping 1,120 points for 94 of the buggers! Who knows, you might need to if you want your precious rod anytime soon, muwahahaha!

Seriously, though, no rush~ Looking back, I would love to be in your position at 66 fishing skill and having the items for an ebisu rod, than myself at 100 fishing with no items.

I'm ranking up on Sunday after doing GP, to avoid Amateur rank.

I got a penguin ring a few days ago, I tried it once, and it made catching Ryugus SOOOOOOO easy, but I don't have the ww and don't want to keep fixing my rod, so I'm really excited to play with Ebisu and a bunch of hard to catch fish ):

I'm so jealous. I want my Ebisu! I'm sure you can get 27k this week, but it's gonna be close!

Almost forgot my 5k GP yesterday, stayed up till 4am getting those Monke-whatever's and hand them in (buggers wouldn't bite). Woke up to GP being Bluetail (5.07) and I had 5 of them conveniently in my satchel

    81,000 / 100,000 for my apron

    Waders: O

Then I start the push for Serpent Rumors! I know I should probably do this before the apron, but I really want an apron, so I'm going to start buying fish for Ebisu while I collect GP for rumors.
