Do you know why people deny Global Warming is happening? They don't want to give up their lifestyles, so they ignore the science. The science is becoming impossible to ignore, to the point where George Bush, who up to two years ago was still claiming that "all the science wasn't in, no proof of Global Warming yet", to a month ago, where he held a summit on Global Warming after the UN session in NY on Global Warming, talking about the need for every nation to cut carbon emissions before it was too late.

Al Gore has been talking about Global Warming for two decades, since he was in Congress, has created a foundation to combating its effects, and, along with the United Nations council, was awarded for being one of the most influental people at getting the issue into the public spotlight. Anyone who says "wtf" to Al Gore is talking out of their ass, and probably has never had more exposure to him than an episode of South Park.
    Quoted for truth.

And I love how dipshits are bashing the Peace Prize just because they dont like who won it. I bet none of you would turn down the noble prize if it was handed to you. Still a big fucking deal in my book.

    QFT..

As to the reasoning behind why this three-decade effort on Gore's part to bring awareness to global warming and its effects.. think about it this way. A good number of conflicts and wars both inside and between countries over the past thousand years have been caused by desire for natural resources - fossil fuels, mineral and precious metal deposits, etc.. We are now starting to see the first conflicts regarding access to water, because supplies of water underground are going dry and becoming polluted. Awareness and action on global warming tries to address both these problems, and brings societies and countries together peacefully to solve a problem that affects all life on the planet, including mankind.

Oh and the thing about him saying he invented the Internet is a fucking myth, made up by GHW Bush's campaign during the 1992 presidential race and parroted in 1994 by the congressional Republicans. Can we please stop repeating it?

It is folks like yourself who make me happy Gore and the watchdogs got a Nobel in the first place. Call it egotistical to believe man can have that drastic an impact on the world, but having seen the evidence, I do believe it to be true. Gore is the public face of that, which is why he shared the prize with the folks who did the hard science.

Otherwise, the field of public opinion would be neatly held to "Oh, it can't be happening" and we'd never have seen Kyoto or even a push towards that sorta of pollution control.

At least it wasn't like in 1973 when Henry Kissinger was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize, then the Nobel Prize Committee immediately awarded themselves with the Nobel Irony Prize.

I don't think this is true of the people scratching their heads over the award.

Let's take a look at the last 10 recipients:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jody_Williams : Worked towards an international land mine ban. Only The US/Russia/China didn't sign it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Trim ... on_Trimble : Convinced Northern Ireland to ratify the Belfast Agreement

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9dec ... i%C3%A8res : Offers free medical services and training to some of the most war-torn nations on the planet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Dae_Jung : Worked constantly for reconciliation between S. and N. Korea

So far, so good. Everyone here seems to be working hard towards peace and more importantly, seeing results. This is the Nobel Prize I saw going to people like Martin Luther King, Jr.

The United Nations/Kofi Annan : For being...the UN.

Jimmy Carter: "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development"

Now the Nobel is being given out for rather vague reasons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirin_Ebadi : Human rights campaigner in Iran.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wangari_Maathai : Reforestation/sustainable farming movement in Africa

    Good!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_ElBaradei : Director of the IAEA

What? Another award to the UN? I guess they did thwart the expansion of militarized nuclear programs (owaitpakistanindiairannorthkorea)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grameen_Bank : Giving loans to the poor in Bangladesh

Don't quite get what this has to do with peace, but I guess economic stability is good for the nation.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intergover ... ate_Change
    + Al Gore

What? Another award to the UN?

THIS is what has me saying 'wtf?' not some misunderstanding about what Gore is doing to raise environmental awareness. Yet another win for the UN I guess, they've got a record to keep building. Environmentalism is a worthy cause, but winning a Nobel should mean more than 'raising awareness.' Can you honestly say that Gore's speechgiving/filmmaking campaign has seen the kinds of material results you used to get out of a Nobel Laureate? I'm really confused as to the value of the Nobel after this latest giveaway.

The planet has gone through several temperature cycles, some of which have been *significantly* warmer than we currently are, we just happen to be on the upswing into another one. Even some of the facts he used to make An Inconvenient Truth that weren't outright exaggerations were taken from the government study on global warming where they purposely deleted the warmer periods in the past to make it look like what is happening now is a big OMGWTF. And yes, they did later find the memos and papers later where they admitted as much and gave the reasons why it needed to be done, for people who may think this is like claiming Bush blew up the Twin Towers. If you believe that humans are the driving force for a warming world because of An Inconvenient Truth, you should also watch The Great Global Warming Swindle.
And if you believe that humans aren't the driving force for a warming world because of The Great Global Warming Swindle, then you probably have a serious mental handicap. While you're sitting there drooling, go take a look at the 'science' present in TGGWS. While the scientific credentials of its creator, Martin Durkin, are impeccable, what with him being a telivision producer with no background in science whatsoever and all, he does have somewhat of a history of making shitty shock-docs disguised as scientific gospel, designed to draw ratings and publicity.

You mention that An Inconvenient Truth uses 'outright exaggerations', but I think exaggerations are still slightly more valid than mis-quoting scientists who have since attacked Durkin over his misuse of what they said, including complete bullshit claims that humans are not in fact the leading contributor of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, but in fact the ancient scourge of the planet, VOLCANOES, are drowning the innocent masses of earth in pollution. When asked to justify any of the 'science' in the program, Durkin responded to an email from Armand Leroi, another scientific documentary producer for channel 4 (who actually does have a background in science), with the extremely mature and enlightened argument: "You're a big daft cock" "Go and fuck yourself".

By the same token An Inconvenient Truth is also designed along a similar line of thought, in that it is trying to reach a pre determined conclusion, however at least it isn't just a giant pile of lies upon lies designed to misinform simply to create controversy.

What's your definition of peace? It doesnt have to be directly related to war and armed conflict,it can also be related to the well being of the planet population. Global warming has the potential to seriously fuck up certain poor country, and finding way around it is probably going to save a ton of people.

Can't say I'm fond of Al Gore...he always seem to be doing it for his own popularity more than the Earth, but what he is doing isn't bad either. If his action could change something in the future, than I supose he deserve it.

See.... this is the kind of thinking that eventually leads people to start to believe people like Ann Coultier.

Please, explain to me how refusing to run for president again (when at this point he would likely win a landslide), and donating his reward, as well as virtually all of his time, and a lot of his own money to fund a charity in the cause for which he's fighting.... is somehow "for his own popularity."

I mean do you think he sits around at night going "well I may have gotten fucked in the ass for the presidency but at least all this global warming bullshit has people thinking I'm cool and not a big dull nerd anymore!"

Or is it just summed up pretty much perfectly by Xavier's post?

Did you miss the part where pretty much the entire world (even the Catholics) are reacting to global warming now, and were hardly acknowledging it as recently as 2 years ago?

Re: Al gore- What the fuck?

The comment about TGGWS was more of a "If you believe Al Gore just because of The Inconvenient Truth". They're both outliers. As for what Al Gore practices, in his movie one of the things he urges people to do is to reduce energy consumption at home. However, he himself uses well above and beyond the national average. In 2006 alone he used 221,000 kWh while the average was 10,656, nearly 20 times more. His average that year was 18,400 kWh, and the year before his movie in 2005, it was 16,200 kWh. If you're going to give a prize to somebody for raising awareness of a topic, they should at least be following their guidelines themselves. Especially if it's something that you already know about unless you've been living under a rock.

There are better options available for purposes like electricity, but most of the people that push things like this are also against the construction of newer, safer, more efficient nuclear plants.

I think I got it... is there another joke other than the obvious one?

The way I see it, Gore is saying something more like "I'll do some good for this stupid country even if they all hate me."

Also, if he ran now, Clinton would do her best to screw him over, and he'd just rather not deal with it again. He might even think he can get more done without getting elected.

This figure is also extremely distored, since it doesn't take into account the fact that he purchases (and uses) a good chunk of his own electricity through renewable means, that he runs some of his businesses from his home, and that the Gores have been forced to install an elaborate security system due to threats to his life because of his work.

Just curious.. where'd you dig up your facts - The Tennessee Center for Policy Research? Credible source right there.. /snark

I actually looked to see if that was a real site. I couldn't remember where it came from so I checked, I guess the 221,00 kWh was a little over, the Associated Press looked into it after some people said the center that published wasn't completely legit. The AP found that he instead purchased 191,000 that year, it's not 221,000 but still well above the 15,500 for the average Nashville home.

*The 191,000 was taken from the utility company's records.

Comparing a rich guy's electricity usage to the city average is a little like saying that you and I are in the richest .001% of the world's population because we make more than 10 cents a day. It's probably true, but it's still completely meaningless. And on top of that, electricity can be produced cleanly in the first place if you pay more for it.

I get your point, but looking at your list, well...the US still has tons of soldiers stationed in S. Korea to serve as a repellent to N. Korean hostility - I guess a stalemate = peace, but demanding "results"? I don't see much reconciliation there. /shrug Human rights in Iran still suck. Clearly "results" isn't the only metric that the award is given on. Better than Bono anyway, fuck that guy.

There's a nomination process right? Who else was nominated that he beat out?

Well, the city of Nashville's average is higher than the national average, and that wasn't counting the natural gas he uses for heating. Just because somebody is rich doesn't mean they should be allowed to be 15x the average for a region while preaching conservation.

On second thought, it turns out I was completely wrong. A politician would never do anything other than what they say. There is a vast conspiracy in motion, much like the one against Jack Thompson. How could I have been so naive. It turns out Al Gore had his tonsils removed and replaced with CO2 scrubbers and even had a filter put in his ass so his farts are eco friendly.

Ya, completely ignore the "Home Business, larger house, needed security system, and alternate means of obtaining the power" and just ramble on about distrust in politicians in general. Your comparison is invalid and you just brushed aside the reasons your comments count for jack shit. Whose the consipiricy theorist here?

Yes, I agree. Al Gore should lead the way in electricity conservation - he should have like 1/8 the consumption of the average american. He should also make his own clothes, ride a bicycle everywhere, and light his house with the sunshine pouring from his asshole.

Erm, actually I prefer the current Al gore to the one you're imagining. Expecting a worldwide famous millionaire to consume less energy than the middle-manager at the box factory is just stupid.
