Question About FFXI Graphics Fix

I was wondering, is there any way of going beyond the set 2048x2048 background resolution?

That limit isn't from FFXI, it's from the graphic cards, at least from the ones that were around by the time that registry edit began to spread. Newer cards support larger rendering resolutions, so it's not an issue to use something larger than what you stated above.

I personally run FFXI at 1280x994 (too keep the taskbar visible) and set the background res at the double of that (2560x1988) on a GeForce 7600GT 256MB, which makes everything look quite smooth.

setting the background higher than the overlay is a way to do anti-aliasing via super-sampling.

going with a square res is more efficient from a rendering standpoint (although not as important as it used to be) and will also tend to increase the effect of vertical AA (vertical aliasing is more apparent to most people)

if you have a card that can drive twice your overlay res (or more) and want to maintain ratio, that's an acceptable way to do it.

going beyond 2x res will still result in additional gains, although the apparent improvement drops off rapidly.

hmm, i run kind of an odd display size because i don't like full full screen.. 1344 x 840. So would 2688 x 1680 background res give noticeably better results than my current 2048 x 2048? I'm running an ATI x1600 pro as I stated earlier...

drawdistance doesnt go further then 20 I think

it's likely that your GPU has a max resolution somewhere above 2560x2048 but below whatever you're trying to set it to.

if you exceed the rendering capability of the GPU it spits out black screens or throws a runtime exception; depending on the exact paths it hits and what card you have.

DD can go up as high as you want, its just that there arnt huge differences after a certain amount. That amount is based on the area, your comp sepcs and your own eyes.
