I select my character and I get the status bar and then I get the black screen with "Downloading data..." at the bottom. that disappears and nothing happens just stays black.

This happened to me a while back... during a cs I don't remember.
I just gave up after talking to a gm (on my mule) that was completely useless telling me to call tech support in the middle of the weekend. (Tech support is unavailable on weekends, even live chat.)
I was able to log in on monday without a problem though.
So it sucks but maybe just wait and it'll work out

Your dats got corrupted, you can try doing a check files, (Never worked for me), if not reinstall the game.
Unless of course the DC was due to internet failure..then i dunno. But if the dc was from FFXI probably this. Your disks may be shitty too, a friend of mine reinstalled 3 times with his same disks and an area wouldn't load right, bought new disks and alas all was well.

This happens to me every now and then. My problem is my router. All I do is reset it and everything runs normal again. (Though I'm sure you already did this.)

I had a friend have this happen to them,, they gave me their account info over POL, I logged them in and moved them to Jeuno.
They then logged in and all was ok, and they did not need to reinstall... Wierd I know but worked
