    Lost Odyssey

Anyone have any additional info on Lost Odyssey? I've seen the trailers and such. The graphics look incredible, however I'm curious to what the gameplay will be like. This is another release from Mistwalkers, so I'm hoping it's more challenging then Blue dragon.

Will do, thanks. Didn't realize they had updated the trailers.

Had a chance to check out some of those gameplay video's. I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Hopefully the storyline will be as decent as the graphics.

iirc, the main character is immortal but doesn't know how, and the story unfolds across his many different lifetimes (lives with other people as they die around him). I could be wrong though, but thats what I remember reading.

Their first game, Blue Dragon, still has me scratching my head, tbh. It got such good press in Japan but was just utterly trashed here. I have high expectations for Odyssey too, but time will tell.

Blue dragon is a dissapointment for sure. This looks promising but then so did that.

Eternal Sonata on the other hand is great.

Yeah, Blue Dragon has left me fairly bored, however I'm hoping this is aimed at the more in depth RPG player.

It's sad that more people give crappy BD a chance while completely ignoring the obviously superior and far more entertaining (at least story-wise, even though the gameplay is pretty cool but repetitive too..) RPG, Eternal Sonata.

This game/thread needs more love... I honestly hope it isn't the complete piece of horse shit that Blue Dragon was.

Well, my understanding is that there is a heavy emphasis on the games story for Lost Odyssey, while Blue Dragon had a rather lackluster one.

Obviously, graphically, it looks really great, but I think thats because its running on the Unreal engine? I also read that the game should take roughly 40 hours to beat, and that 20 of those hours are cut-scene, so take that for what you want. I'm excited, but I was excited for Blue Dragon too, so who knows.

It looks great, but I'd hate to shoot myself in the foot again by getting too excited.

Yeah, unfortunately so far every import impression I have read has absolutely panned it.

    Re: Lost Odyssey

Exactly my problem... they hyped Blue Dragon so much that i'm not sure whether to believe LO's hype this time.

I really hope that if it is indeed focused on story, that the story is actually GOOD for a change..

    Some goodies...
Loading times seem to be a drag, Kelolons seem to be Mistwalker's mascot, and the gameplay seems a tiny bit too slow but it might be because enemies keep joining in.

Either way I dunno what to think right now... I hope it won't bomb.

    Lost Odyssey - Xbox 360, February 12th, 2008 (USA)
    Developer: Mistwalker, feelplus
    Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
    Game Engine: Unreal Engine 3
    Media: 4 DVD-DL

    Production Details
    Director: Hironobu Sakaguchi
Story: Kiyoshi Shigematsu (award winning Japanese novelist)
Art: Takehiko Inoue (famed Japanese comic artist
    Music: Nobuo Uematsu

Basic Premise - From Wikipedia, Lost Odyssey
    • In Lost Odyssey the player takes control of Kaim, a man who has lived for 1,000 years.
    • Revolves around the many generations of which Kaim is a part of, his loves and losses and conflicts in a world nearing a "mystical industrial revolution".
    • Apparently nine playable characters, some mortal, some immortal.
    • Story unfolds both in-game and in separate "novel" like segements (optional reading).

    Gameplay
    • Menu-based battle system
    • There exists a front row and a back row for your team during combat, players in the front row block members in the back row from being attacked.
    • Immortal characters do not learn new spells, rather, they assign themselves to mortal characters, who learn magic through usage.
    • Immortals automatically revive themselves in combat after a few rounds, party is defeated if all characters are down at the same time.

    Japanese Reception
    Famitsu: 36/40 (Blue Dragon received a 37/40).
First day sales: 40,000 (Blue Dragon sold 83,000 copies on day one).

    Criticism
    • IGN posted their impression after six hours with the Japanese release, and were critical of several things:

Barring a dramatic shift past the six hour mark, Lost Odyssey isn't going to blow people away with its visuals or presentation. But, aside from a few cliches here and there, all signs do point to an otherwise solid Japanese RPG.

Just a quick compilation of info on Lost Odyssey, to show it some love. I still have some hope for it, but some of the comments made by the IGN editor have me worried. Still, he did say that it looked like it would probably be a solid Japanese RPG.

Yeah there seems to be plenty of bugs... but as long as the story is decent and the music doesn't suck like in Blue Dragon it should be good.

Yep, story and music is what make a game memorable for me, and that one look decent in both aspect. I will probably get it if I ever buy a xbox.

The low frame rate problem kinda bother me...how can they let something like this slip after 4 years of production. You dont program a game hoping it will run on your system, you need to program it taking the system in consideration.
