It sounds more like Assault to me, since they point out that there are more varied activities than just direct fighting.
Could be something similar to Alterrac Valley in WoW - a huge battlefield where you can fight against the other army, but also plenty of sidequests you can complete that aid your side. I could see this as a way to involve even low levels or something - low levels pick up supplies from the city and run it out to NPCs near some of the forts in the field. This either heals the NPCs, or maybe provides players with temporary items? I could definitely see how this could be integrated into one large battle, but since instanced fights went over so well in ToAU, yours is a good possibility, too.

I'm also beginning to suspect that different portals may lead to different times in the past, though. I had assumed that there would be one "world of past" you could freely roam, but perhaps they break up different areas based on those critical battles they mentioned in today's Crystal War topic. That would probably make more sense plot-wise if they wanted everyone to experience all of these historical fights, keeping each zone in that conflict eternally. Perhaps a return to the CoP system of beating certain missions/battles to unlock the next area?

I'm thinking more along the lines of Assault/Besieged-like stuff. I want to see a line of beastmen charging across an entire zone that's big enough to handle it. Epic. Warfare.

Now, if you excuse me I have a Federation to save in a few weeks...so I can get born, grow up and become an adventurer that goes back in time to save the Federation so I can get born...

(Anyone else getting a serious Final Fantasy I (not XI) vibe at this point?)

I agree that this could constitute the new rumored tanking job. Perhaps it could incorporate elements of the Greek gladiator tradition as well... and maybe use the name Gladiator as well. According to my limited understanding, Rikishi can refer to professional sumo wrestlers in Japan. The similarities to gladiator include the notional of professional fighters that were highly trained to compete for sport. Depending on how this theoretical job is executed will obviously impact how appropriate the gladiator name will be, however I am not sure that SE will create another lightly armored h2h job, especially as one that's theoretically designed to tank. To support the claim that wrestler/strongman/rikishi isn't too far from that of Gladiator, I provide the following supporting statements in picture form.

    (Awesome)
Also maybe they could throw vikings into the mix there... but i'd still prefer the name gladiator... and the look.

Viking was in Final Fantasy III, but its main ability, Provoke, was already given to Warrior. Still, it's a tank job through-and-through and has some basis story-wise, since they were a legendary tribe to the North whose strength rivaled the mighty Gigas. They're only briefly mentioned in the Life In Vana'diel book, but recently Square Enix has been taking more and more from it.

    Anyway, just my guess.
If Viking is the new job I will level it to 60 on my Galka so I can run around in full AF in Windurst shouting "FEEEEEEAAAAASSSST!!!"

And maybe throw garbage cans at cars when I run out of Tarus to eat.

If they do not make an NM named "Slurms McKenzie" I will be incredibly disappointed.

    That's Gustaberg, near Drachenfall.

I know because I asked Septimus where in Gustaberg that was

I think that is North Gustaberg, under the Drachenfall.

I can tell from the fauna, and the fact it's that bleak strip-mined look and not rugged dangerous mountain pass full of reddish brown dirt.

And seeing many FFXI zones in my time.

I'm betting this strongman/Viking job will be the new tanking job everyone's been wanting. The real question is, how will it work? PLD already has defense down and it doesn't sound like an evasive job. Will it use H2H?

At any rate, it sounds interesting. God knows we need something to spice up the job dynamic. Only down side imo is that this probably pushes out the as yet unconfirmed and quite possibly imaginary Geomancer. Looks like Dancer, probably viking, and probably time mage.

Incidentally, I was looking at the bastok timeline Elmer made and...

Are you saying this as in you think there will only be 3 jobs? Wasn't there rumor for 4 jobs based on the info Famitsu obtained about the Job abbreviations he/she heard? (DNC TMM MDC EMU)

Wait... why are people referring to the new rikishi/wrestler/strongman as Viking? Seems like it would be more sumo influenced than some nordic barbarian based on the labels given so far.

I think because Elmer threw out the name Viking when explaining that they used Provoke in earlier FFs, then everyone was like OMFGVIKINGISTHENEWJOB.

They only ever said there would be "more than one." 2 is the most likely, 3 is in the realm of possibilty (since that's the norm), but 4 is just unlikely to the point that there's no reason to get your hopes up.

    Cue "No, no it wont."

    No.

I gotta admit, I'm kinda hoping they'll just retrofit old jobs like WAR & maybe MNK to be better tanks. In MNK's case, it would probably have to be some sort of stance thing to cut down the damage we do, but WAR prolly just needs a new bad-ass ability or two to bridge the gap.

Guarded Stance? Same increase to guard proc as counterstance's counter, but at a loss of attack. IDK. D:
