    Free SE MMO "Concerto Gate"

    http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q4-2007/102307c.html
San Jose based game publisher OnNet USA has agreed to publish the Square Enix developed MMO Concerto Gate in the States. Concerto Gate is the sequel to the MMO Cross Gate, which saw great success in Japan and other Asian markets since its release in July of 2001.

Concerto Gate is marked by its ease of familiarity to those fans of console based RPGs through its use of randomly generated battles. The game presents in an art style similar to that of Ragnarok Online, though with a Square Enix touch of flair. The visuals display a creative cross between the Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon and Seiken Densetsu titles.

Unique to Concerto Gate is a world map with "terra generating" elements that will show changes done to landscapes over large period of time. Forests may disappear through extensive tree cutting and small holes dug to search for treasure may eventually grow into larger ones.

OnNet USA is preparing a public beta to begin in the early months of 2008. Concerto Gate will be free-to-play to anyone wanting to experience it.

heh... I saw figures for this at a convention but I didn't want to buy them without knowing what it was from. That being said, after watching the battle video it seems turn-based? That's very interesting for an mmo. >_>

It's a mix of real and turn based, kinda interesting, I would have preffered a more RO style, but this may be good.

That battle system looks kinda boring for an online game imo...
If there's any PvP in that game I'm sure it will suck pretty hard.

I thought the same myself, the article compared the game to RO, but when I found the vids I saw the turn based action.. I was like.... ehhh, needs more RO battle style.

So.. I dunno how good or bad it will be.. people must like it, this is a sequal to the game thats out currently, and they put expansion packs out for the previous game. You figure somethings gotta be good about it.

RO, lol. That game is so simple, but so much fun when you have nothing else to play.

I'll give it a shot, but from what those movies show it looks pretty bad.

My question is... Is there any other turn based MMOs out there besides the realm and this.

CROSS GATE was not introduced to the US, but it has gained popularity within Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan and Korea. The game has accumulated 23 million registered users in China alone since its launch in February 2002.

    Hmm.

Speaking of turn-based and random battles being odd for an MMO, maybe it'll be more like a console RPG that just has online co-op capabilities in a persistent world. Instead of controlling a party of 4-5 characters, you only have 1 and the rest are played by others, but otherwise is consistent with a console RPG style of play. Although replay value would be low, I think it'd be fun to play something like that with an actual finite storyline like real console RPGs. Something you can actually beat online with friends, and not be an MMO type grind.

Last I played it many a year ago, Dofus has a turn-based fighting system. Its a flash-based MMO that is kinda good... but I stopped playing when they made it pay to play. Once you enter a battle you go to a different map. Battle map is tiled, and you move based on your speed and such.
