Re: Latest Info on New SquareEnix MMORPG

Imo, the biggest issue with FFXI is downtime/gathering time/traveling. Having to job change all the time, wait for other and going to the location of the event is one huge time sink that slow down gameplay way more than it should.
I'm just glad we can change jobs in the first place, this is the only game I know that allows you to play multiple jobs on one character. And the community is better for it. Every other game you have a bunch of "alts" which I find annoying.

As for death penalties, at one point there was no 2k loss minimum, so it's gotten better, and also in some games you can lose gear when you die which is retarded.

Hell no, i'm not playing another SE-built MMO.
No one forces you to sit there for 3 hours. I had more fun doing random crap and not even worrying about camping kings.

They don't seem to care about fixing old content, but everything from late CoP and on has been improvements in almost every area. And that is what matters concerning a new game. Assaults and Salvage is likely have a bigger effect on this game than something added in 2003 which the playerbase seems to care about far more than the Devs do.

Additionally, you have to take into account FFXI's age and when it was 1st introduced into the market. If I remember right, around this time, the whole xp lost thing was a common place for MMOs. There isn't exactly a method of fixing this in any way other than a total system overhaul now. Has SE learned from the experiences of FFXI? I'd say yes with the current way things are being implemented and going, or else we'd be playing the same game that was created for 2003.

Quite frankly with the whole ToAU crap, there's so much easy xp that xp shouldn't be much of a problem. Hell I'm thf 75% of the time for TH and I get my entire xp buffer via Besieged. And trust me, I die plenty being the person I am.

SE does a really great job making games and story lines for them. What they still haven't learned in the 5 years is our to enforce their rules. Or they hire the dumbest fucking idiots on the planet to become GMs <cue sig of GM asking a bst about his pet>.

SE's GMs are nothing more than babysitters and investigators. "whaaaaa someone called me a moron /callgm" or "Hmmm botting you say? I'll look into that and then make a copypasta detailed 'report' with minor changes of last month's report of what I 'did'." It's the GMs that give SE and FFXI a bad name. I find more productivity in talking to a wall than to those fucking idiots. We have WS and equipment macros, they have "Thank you for your comments. We will investigate this matter immidiately" macros.

SE should really look to their player base for GMs for their new MMO. The GMs they have now are nothing short of an embarassment for them.

Re: Latest Info on New SquareEnix MMORPG

GMs have been terrible at managing player disputes since the age of UO. What's more important is designing a game where these disputes don't mean anything and people get over them quickly because some other productive thing to do is available immediately.

From the very beginning you're competing with others for slow-respawning mobs.

'Oh shit that party just killed all our Clippers'
'Damn that PL'd gilseller party trained every mob in the zone and -ga'd it down'
'Fuck there goes the last Lich Spawn, let's go to Beaucedine side and hope nobody's there'
'Goddamn thief just opened my AF coffer'
'ugh Uleguerand, Mamools and Greater Colibri are all full...let's merit somewhere else'

For years, FFXI fostered a terrible trend of 'only one alliance gets to have a shot at the best gear every 24 (kings), 36 (CoP Wyrms) or 72 (Dynamis zones), locking everyone else wanting to participate for that window.

Even without super-high server population the odds are very good, 1-75 that someone somewhere is going to not only piss you off but make all the time you just spent gaming wasted in FFXI. I have to believe this is the root cause of all the silly GM calls and bitchfests that happen everywhere in Vana'diel. This is the major lesson SE's online designers haven't fully grasped in 4 years now: A game that's zero-sum with a lot of time spent doing...well, nothing--from start to finish just isn't attractive after a while. The game's fun...but only when timing, luck and/or the failure of your competition works in your favor.

What you should really be worried about is the cross platform play.

As long as they keep it on the PC platform, you're gonna have cheaters.

"they just want us to have fun playing it" isn't the whole truth. Of course they want to hit WoW numbers.

I agree partially on the 1st point, the multi-national thing isn't all bad. It allows for a more diverse group of players and also makes it easier for people who have strange playing hours to find groups, etc.

Cross platform play is not a great idea in my opinion not because of cheating, but because it limits the game. Having a game on PC does not instantly make it easily hacked.

I think the statement about reaching WoW's numbers serves a few purposes. One, it doesn't give them any astronomical expectations to meet, and the game won't thus be judged as a "failure" in some people's eyes. I think it would take something either very revolutionary or a very well made game that looks much better than WoW to come close to the player base it has right now. It also stops some criticism about them trying to make a "WoW killer" which seems nigh-impossible right now.

Personally I didn't think FFXI was too bad. It just lacked 2 things, a steady flow of new content (that was meaningful) and progression among that content. An entertaining and more balanced PvP system would have been nice, but PvP was sort of a minor afterthought in the game.

I just hope this comes out sometime soon, so it isn't released on a 4-5 year old system and again be plagued by "hardware limitations" though that is hard to imagine at this time on the 360 and PS3.

Edit: After reading Correction's post, it made me realize another thing FFXI was lacking. Ways to progress your character alone. Being able to do something outside of sitting in your MH (and wanting to especially) would go a long way to making things more enjoyable.

I'm a fan of "severe" death penalties. In WoW death really doesn't mean jack and for the most part people don't care if they die, so they don't work on, well, not dying. All it does is give another reason for people to not make an effort, and I'm not a fan of people doing that.

I'll most likely play a new SE MMO, but I would want to get a lot more information about it before I'm certain. Oh and I'd need a better computer...

I think you misunderstand the WoW death system.

While exping, if you die you become a 'ghost' and have to run back to your corpse to safely revive with the smallest penalty (time spent running back + the added cost of repairing -10% durability).

While instancing, if you die and don't have a rez for whatever reason you have to run all the way to the instance portal, then all the way through the instance you've been clearing to get back to where you were. It's still time+money but the time component is stretched out.

While raiding there are only two spells that let you rez someone while a mob is engaged (the 'combat rez') and they're on pretty long cooldowns (30 minutes). On top of that, one of them is meant for wipe recovery and not really rezzing (the 'soulstone'). The penalty for 1 person out of 25 dying in a raidboss encounter makes the fight exponentially harder. If a DPS just died, that's between 9% and 10% of the boss's HP the rest of the raid has to make up for. If a healer died, that's a lot of more deaths to follow as there isn't enough healing to cover both raid and main tank. If a tank dies...well that's just a wipe, and the money+time penalty is multiplied by 25. Die enough times in a raid and you'll have to reclear trash, which is even more money+timex25 people.

The penalty for dying in WoW scales with the rewards for not dying. That isn't anywhere near to what FFXI puts you through for dying. You can die 10 times to Tiamat and still get fire crystals when he dies. But Scout's Honor the WoW death penalty is hardly a 'get ouf of being good at your class free' card.

Re: Latest Info on New SquareEnix MMORPG

I think a cool option for an MMO would be to let people choose who they are playing with in terms of platform:

    1. Have servers where everyone else is on the same platform as you. If you're on 360, you play with nothing but 360's. If you're on a PS3, you play with nothing but PS3's, PCs play with other PCs, etc.

    2. Have servers where you don't care and all platforms are meshed.

In either instance, at least you know what you're dealing with when you sign-on to a particular server. I don't know how feasible this is in terms of cost of maintainance or labor, but I think it's a cool idea.

I promised myself when i failed quitting ffxi that i would never get involved in another MMO again for the rest of my life. I don't really care how awesome it sounds, I don't want to get sucked into another time sink like this where i can't just turn off the game and come back to it when i want.

Games that play while i'm not there are fun when you're there, and suck when your not. Bad part about growing up is now it's impossible to be there for more than an hour at a time.

That's why I quit. These games are built for people with alot of time on their hands, and in my experience I just couldn't compete with the following people: college kids who shunned their schoolwork and friends, the unemployed, stay-at-home moms, and retired people. I know there are other cases...I knew a guy who played all day because he was handicapped and couldn't move around. Nice guy, but what else is he going to do with his time?

The key to all happy MMORPG playing- stop trying to compete. The game doesn't go away because you didn't hit Divine Might a week earlier, or a month. Enjoy the content when you get the chance.

I'd have been a frustrated burnout otherwise.
