Re: Latest Info on New SquareEnix MMORPG

I like it when people insult other people who play games more than them. "Obviously everyone who plays more than me is somehow a loser in real life! Because me? No one is better than me, they must have some major flaw."

FFXI has really improved in its events. Dynamis was orginally a huge problem for me because it last 4 hours(and my first LS started a 10pmEST...). Assaults are perfect in that two or three runs never goes longer for 2 hours. It's too bad Assault hasn't caught on with most of the community outside "Need more Salvage" or "Need to get that one armor piece". I guess it doesn't help the search system sucks(but I guess that's true for most MMORPGs). If Assaults were originally adapted at the level 50 cap, things would have gone a lot smoother for most people. I believe that SE will realize it is superior than their previous content and it will likely appear in their new MMO. I still won't be playing because FFXI is going to be last MMORPG.

The key to all happy MMORPG playing- stop trying to compete. The game doesn't go away because you didn't hit Divine Might a week earlier, or a month. Enjoy the content when you get the chance.

That's easier said than done. My specific problem was this. I've been a Paladin all 3 years I've been playing the game. When the LS I was in first started I was one of the Paladins that got to tank on a regular basis. Along comes someone who decided they wanted to start playing Paladin, leveled it from 40-75 in a matter of weeks. He didn't do anything but play damn near 24/7 and ended up getting incredibly lucky with gear drops and ended up with a better gear set in 6 months than I have in my 3 entire years. I hold a 8-5 job. I played about 6-7 hours a night. This other Paladin just had way more opportunities than I had gamewise and cashed in on them. Pretty soon I lost my position as Paladin. I wasn't allowed to tank at events anymore because I didn't have a Valor Surcoat and this guy did. All I had was Koenig Cuirass and a Gallants + 1.

So in that sense I felt I did need to compete...to keep doing what I wanted to do with my friends. After awhile I tired of camping NMs to get gear for other people who would always have more raid points than I had.

This is the main reason I'd consider playing an SE MMO again. I'm certainly not a roleplayer, but I still get attached to the character I spend leveling up and getting gear for. It annoys me that all other MMOs make me create an entirely different character just to try out a different job.

Nobody said that the only people who play a lot are losers, he said that it's generally people who don't have much on their plate that have the time to. I played this game damn near every day all day for a long time, but i was one of those people who could afford to blow off class or studying in order to do so. life's changed a lot more than the game has and short of a disaster in my life i couldn't see myself ever having that kind of free time again.

Maybe in a year or so when I will most likely end up working from home but even then, i'm not even sure i would want to.

I'd still love to be able to play the game, but my bottom line is that my life doesn't afford me the ability to anymore and partially cause of that I don't think i could play it again if I wanted to. I've done a good job of alienating myself from the people I called friends, hell i've quit and come back like 5 times, even now I log onto a friends account every now and then to do something. I fail at quitting.

I do that right now, but it's very difficult to even play once every 3 weeks due to my time constraints. Hell i can't even play my ps2 games as much as i used to. I can personaly attest that balancing FFXI with real life is practicaly imposible. I haven't quit yet, but i've thought about it soo many times.

Re: Latest Info on New SquareEnix MMORPG

I'm just glad we can change jobs in the first place, this is the only game I know that allows you to play multiple jobs on one character. And the community is better for it. Every other game you have a bunch of "alts" which I find annoying.
Half of me agrees with you here, half of me doesn't. I like the idea of getting one character and keeping that one character always. You become attached to it. And if you're in dynamis and you're on, say, RDM and a MNK piece drops no one wants and you also have MNK at 75, you can lot on it and use it later. In something like WoW you're on your lock and a nice piece drops for your pally and it gets sharded.

However having the same character also has problems. For one they have to make gear/etc more difficult because you can use it across multiple jobs. For example if a Dalmatica drops I can use it on my BRD, my RDM or my WHM even if I might not necessarily use it on all jobs. With Warcraft the replayability is kept because if that nice pally piece drops while I'm on lock and it gets sharded, it's tough luck, I have to go through the same instance on my pally and hope it drops again. And that's where the games diverge - WoW keeps you playing by making you run things a few times on different jobs, FFXI keeps you playing by having ridiculously low drop rates. Now it might just be me, but I'd prefer running an instance 10 times on a different job (different perspective - keeps things interesting) than staring into space for 3 hours a night (regardless of job) to get a drop... a mob that you might not even get to fight at that.

So yes I like having one character to develop... I also like how I can have totally different experiences on different characters even if I have to repeat content, because I know that if I go into an instance I will get to do something with my 3 hours rather than just stare into space.

Also for the other points mentioned, I dislike how FFXI really does take up a lot of time. Due to travel times, event times, and a distinct lack of any solo content you can't just log on for an hour or two a night and achieve something. You need to put in months/years of effort and attendance. Sure it makes it nice when you do get your item, but it only works if you have time for it. Hopefully with a new MMO they will add more content that will attract the more casual MMO player without 'becoming WoW' (yes, I know they said they're not even trying to compete or basing the game on a WoW model, but still).

I think the one problem SE will have with a new MMO is their reputation from FFXI. A lot of people who played FFXI won't play again for various reasons outlined in this thread and word of mouth spreads for MMO's. I hope they have something that will attract a new market for them. Sure, they'll get some players from FFXI playing it, but I just don't think they'll too many.

Changing job is great. What I was complaining about is inventory space, and the time it takes to actually swap your gears (3-4min every times). It's just annoying.

I like the changing jobs, the unfortunate side effects are loot whoring and a large amount of clutter.

Caused in no small part by SE's mind-bogglingly shitty job at job-specific itemization. You have to have a piece of gear for every ability you use per class, instead of simply every class you play. If that wasn't a problem we'd all be happy with 50 mog house safes and no lockers.

Re: Latest Info on New SquareEnix MMORPG

I think the key to a successful MMORPG *is* to allow casual players to play and enjoy their time on the game, while still having a lot of facets for the hardcore gamer.

I think that's why WoW has done so well... they really allow you to cater to your own time for a lot of the most basic functions (IE, leveling and making money). You could easily spend a few hours every week whenever you have time and get somewhere in the game. Picking up exp and money is simple, and dying is far less of a big deal. Obtaining usable gear isn't too bad either, but the best is still earned through end game content for people with more time allowed.

A new MMO shouldn't be a carbon copy of WoW, obviously, but they should learn from their mistakes. While they seemingly have gotten better over time (Compare Limbus, Assault, Salvage, exping in Aht Urghan vs exping in West areas...), they still have refused to change their worst ideas (King camps...), and still come up with "gems" like Einherjar (possibly the worst sink ever...).

I hope they take a few pages from WoW, and twist them in an interesting way. The fact is, FFXI is *difficult* to play as a casual gamer, since the leveling and money making processes are huge grinds. If a new MMO is the same way, it will never have a such an explosive user base.

    In before PS3 limitations..

But really I will try out this new MMO if and when it ever comes out. If theres one thing that keeps me in FFXI is the graphics and MMOs released even this year still don't compare in my eyes. I think SE has learned alot from their first MMO and that the next one will be even better but we'll see. It's probably going to be quite some time from now..

    Edit: whoa didnt even notice this was necro'd >_>;

Might try it if they give a free trial... but I'll probably be turned off it because it isn't a FF (so far as we know), like previously said, that was the main reason I got this one...

Though, if it's not complete win, I'm not having another timesink in my life

That's the thing with any MMORPG (and I've gone between casual LS chatterbox to hardcore EQ guild raider to Gemstone guild officer and near anything in between). They're designed to take whatever time you put into them. The more time you get, the more options- it's when we think the only option is "play every possible minute" that games like FFXI kill people's heads.

At the moment, I do the occasional Dynamis, Campaign for merits when I feel like improving my RDM, and stretch my legs otherwise, just exploring and occasionally helping out with stuff, or playing around with lower-level jobs. Maybe once a week or two get ahead on CoP.

Like I said- the game content will not go away. People are still doing their first Promyvion, taking down Alexander, and going "OMG CAIT SITH!" as you read this. Fafnir will not stop spawning. It'll all wait for you, and so will anyone who's a real friend...and that's sorta the whole idea in playing MMORPGs for me. Having fun with friends.

Edit: And even posting on topics you failed to realized had been necrobumped, go me!

didn't mean to freak anyone out, sorry ^^;;. but, if you google the address you might be able to tell that it's not a bogus website (ex. "squareenixmmo" into the google search bar).

What of the chance that I bumped up a 3 month old thread because I may have come across some more consolidated information that participants of such a relevant thread may be able to find interesting? Whether they find it so or not is hardly a criminal act on my part.

It is a new site though (posts dating from november '07), and I understand your weariness about unsolicited posts. My bad. If you'd like to wait for it to become more official, great. I'd like for it to become more official myself. But, if no one knows about it, how can it be supposed to happen?

    anyways, sorry for the trouble.

I think in these times of accounts being "hacked" and "hijacked" it is better to err on the side of caution, I am sure it was nothing doubting you as a person or anything of that nature.

Thanks for the heads up nonetheless, it should be an interesting read.
