Correct! I myself used to make this mistake till someone pointed it out to me... and I'm UK born and bred. During the summer months (end of March till end of October) UK switches to British Summer Time. This is GMT+1. GMT never changes but people just assume that whatever the time in UK is then that's GMT. Outside that seven month period it is.... otherwise no. 8)Originally Posted by Capo

It wasn't their fault. Damn DDoS attacks.Originally Posted by Koga
Sure do, I think the servers didn't come back online until something insane like 2-3am PST.Originally Posted by Koga

Were you there for when rarely had extended maint, just recurring maints in succession? lol I remember when CoP 1st came out and we had so many maints in succession for a week and a half.Originally Posted by Fhqwghads
My memory is really vage about it but sounds familiar.Originally Posted by Koga
I remember when Ragnarok crashed and each server followed on a domino effect, though, which lead to many hours of unscheduled maintenance during the following days to fix.
Yes please. Mine's a Guinness. And some salt and vinegar crisps. ^^Originally Posted by niisse

Considering what we pay as a playing group to SE on a monthly basis and the lag that we experience in AUW, i'd expect a whole day of maintenance.... Eve-online manages to cope perfectly well with 32000 players in a graphically/tech complex envieronment on ONE SERVER.....seriously SE need to get their shit together, it's 2007, not 2003.Originally Posted by CailIfrit

Yeah, but the underlying tech is from 2003. I don't think you should hold your breath for any length of time waiting on an almost entire re-write.Originally Posted by Ehlana

One player-visible server doesn't mean one actual server. Eve may have all their servers coordinated and interconnected, but you can be damn sure there's far more than just one. Same goes for FFXI - which is why you can have lag in AUW and yet none in secluded areas.Originally Posted by Ehlana
The real problem is that FFXI uses an outdated model where servers don't load balance. It's one server per area and never changes. Or two, or three, but not enough to handle 700 people in one zone. More modern MMO server engines are smart enough to take those servers that are idling running something like Ifrit's Cauldron and load balance some of the work to them.
On their end, or the user's end? I'm not sure if SE boosted their hardware if we'd see much of a difference. Maybe stuff would load faster in Whitegate and other densely populated areas, but the frame-rate would still suck.Originally Posted by spooky

As far as users throwing more hardware at it, since I've been told that there's a cap on both the frame-rate and the bandwidth, speedier hardware and a faster connection both won't do much. Diminishing returns and all that crap... once you hit the ceiling on how fast the game will let you run it, no amount of bad-ass cutting edge hardware will help. That's why I mentioned how a re-write is probably the only solution, and that'll happen when hell freezes over. (Stranger things have happened though, hi2u The Eagles!) All hearsay of course, since I've never seen their code, but with the PC I have and a fairly fast connection, it sure seems that way.

One FFXI server (e.g. Carbuncle) isn't a single machine......seriously people need to get their shit together and learn not to make baseless claims on subjects they know nothing about.Originally Posted by Ehlana
Could you explain what exactly is the problem with taking down the servers for a couple of hours once every couple of weeks? You know that almost all other MMO's have much more downtime OR have 10x the number of regular users, right?Originally Posted by EternityEnd
face it.. some people can't live w/o ffxi for more than an hour at a time...Originally Posted by ringthree
Im glad they're doin maintenance... theyre probably upgrading or addinf something to prepare for DX9 and/or WotG...
