The guy isn't allowing reporters in or the general public, the guy isn't even going to shake hands with anyone! I know this isn't new, but how much longer are we going to be used as money pits for presidential candidates whom we do not have the right to vote for, and especially candidates who don't even give a shit about us?

It wasn't so much about my remark about bananas, but the first part of my post, where I pointed out the perpetual apathy of Americans toward the rest of the world, that could be considered another incidence of "insulting the intelligence of Americans" (Democratic debates notwithstanding). As such, I preempted a second attack on the same grounds as that in the dino/religion debate thread. Of course, maybe you only attacked my post two weeks ago because I was contradicting your own point that time. That would also make sense.

Do you mean the recent referendum that was never intended to be put into action? The US government had intended from the begining to keep Puerto Rico as a non incorporated territory since the Foraker Act by keeping it especially vague, and then asserting this position during the Insular Cases. It has been stated numerous times, and even admited by many members of Congress, that placing the option of "Remaining as you are", which i believe was the option that won out during sead referendum, was completely wrong seing as how the current system is merely an autonomous colony, as contradictory as that sounds, which, according to the UN, is not supossed to exist.

There should only have been two options, Statehood or Independance, and naturally, the "Possibilist" tendencies of our society won out, and they chose the dickhead option which fixed absolutly nothing. In other words, the referendum was just something trown out there to make it seem like Puerto Rico was fully responsible for choosing to remain as a colony, an option that wasn't suposed to be there.

If you want to be known as a country, you better damn well be able to support yourself. Federal aid? Dont blame it on something you never had. If Jamaica can support their economy without "Federal aid", why cant Puerto Rico? Again, dont blame the national government for what your own government should be handling.

But we do get federal aid, or so i assume that's what we get. In fact, in my opinion, one of the things that is helping in the deterioration of our society is the constant flow of cash that is injected into our economy. We have people who don't work because they win more money by not working, we have american businessess overpowering the local economy, and thanks to that archaic law of incentives, these business basicaly cheat the local government out of cash, forcing it to hire workers and which leads to the oversaturation of the government work force, and hence an inneficient government. Not to mention these same businessmen from the mainland helping perpetuate the corrupt system by constantly feeding the politicians their daily meals when they do their "job" right.

The island has merely become the shady business dealing center for the US, where all sorts of illegal acts take place. I could make you a TL;DR mega post about how it all got to be this way, but put simply, the US government's early projects of debilating the native economy and replacing it with it's own, and therefore also eliminating any independence the island has, transforming it into the leech it is today. What we need is the federal government to stop acting as if trowing money at the problem is going to fix anything, the US needs to get back in here and deal with the problematic seeds they planted. We need to have reforms made and start an independent economy, instead of sitting by twideling our thumbs hoping some new charismatic super hero/politician arrives and saves us from our own ineptitude, whilst we continue to believe the "Estatus" is what really matters.
