Google Analytics data for windower usage from April 1st to October 1st. The upswings are updates. You can see that FFXI was dropping off pretty badly immediately before the July update, but it bounced back up and kept fairly high until FFXIV's release.

This represents the number of launcher launches per day for Windower 4 users who opted in to collection. These players are mostly NA/EU (20% Japanese, 5% Chinese). It is possible that JP usage is different, but you can see about a 50% drop in net Windower 4 usage between April and October. The attrition seems to have slowed, but it's still trending downwards.



You can actually potentially see the July drop-off starting around the peak above May, which probably represents the April 29th update where they outdated RME. Considering that it takes time to sell your shit, inactivate, etc. this ~20% drop-off could have been due to RME quitters.

July 2013's update added 2 WKRs (and the associated zones) and capes/crap, as well as raising the max Coalition rank to 5 (I think). That could perhaps explain the spike in activity as people explored new areas. More likely it is due to the first Login Campaign, which started on July 10th.

this doesnt surprise me, there is barely going anything on via shouts dury EU prime and we have entered a negativ spiral downwards to hell. World migrations or something else needs to happen, because at this rate the game becomes unplayable at some point.

While I wasn't very methodical about taking /sea results, this is what I have till I stopped paying for XI. SoA raised population when it was released, and slowly declined after that (with the weekends having a higher population). Low points were immediately after maintenance (I usually logged in around 3 P.M. Eastern).

For the most part, Cerberus hovers around 550'ish people most of the time, give or take a few of course, but sometimes it'll go to 900+ on the weekend and/or JP prime time.

Numbers are bad because of bad content for the last few years, very little to do with xiv other than the last push. Abyssea was amazing content imo, I had more fun with that than anything in the game in the 7 years I played, the problem was they decided to go back to crap older style content (badly done) and after abyssea that just didn't fly. I tried the beta for XIVARR didn't like it, didn't like what they did with XI so now I'm playing neither.

Most I know quit long before XIV and very few of my friends actually moved to XIV, they just went to other mmos.

Given what I've seen of XIV and it suffering the same problems of current XI (high burn rate content) I think they could very well end up with less profits from these 2 games than if they had simply properly supported XI on its own. Square are such a brain dead company lately.

They went from running one profitable cheap to maintain mmo to destroying the population of one and running another incredibly expensnive game with a shakey future.

Yesterday 258 logged in on Lakshmi around 1am EST.

Vertical progression was the worst decision SE could have ever hoped to make. They simply do not have the resources to keep people occupied in between update periods which was previously staved off by low drop rates and the need to maintain multiple sets of gear which took time and effort.

Somewhere Tanaka is laughing that by 2014 Final Fantasy XI could be closing its doors.
