    Codecs for Quicktime

I have Quicktime Pro, and I'm trying to convert .AVI (Div3 codec) files to files playable on my iPhone. Only issue is I can't even view the files to convert them because quicktime fails at life. I downloaded Divx, but Im assuming its not the right codecs...or somehow the Divx I downloaded isn't adding the codecs to quicktime, because it won't play any of my movies at all. Any help? Did I mess up the codec installation or do I need some different codec.

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

So first, your having trouble opening an .avi file? Try VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ that prog can open up about 95% of all files without installing any codecs. If that doesnt work you can try K-Lite Mega Codec Pack http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/ which installs basiclly every codec there is so you can play files on WMP or WMPClassic. So dont even bother with quicktime, get rid of that shit.

If you still cant get it to play.. I wouldnt even bother, sounds like the file was poorly converted and doesnt even work.

So now you want to convert .avi to iPhone, right? iPhone supports H.264, which is a good format, but it has different containers, .avi .mov .mpeg and .mkv. I dont use iPhone, and ive been trying to find out what format it uses, but I cant find anything. So without knowing that, I cant help anymore, im also not sure if you can just toss a movie on a stick and have ihpone read it, or if you have to convert it to an 'iphone format' first.

    Try http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=.avi+to+iphone
and http://www.virtualdub.org/ that one of the best progs to do any sort of video converting.

Ill try to help more if I can.

    Re: Codecs for Quicktime

Well the whole point is I have Quicktime Pro, that will perfectly convert my movies into the exact optimal format for my iPhone, so they don't use too much memory, but still look really damn good on it. I guess I could convert them out of the .AVI format into something Quicktime can use, and then convert them to w/e the iPhone can read, but that just seems like one extra step. Essentially I need Quicktime to read an .AVI file, that's the issue. Not using Quicktime (at least until I've exhausted all efforts) isnt an option right now.

Even on a Mac there's no good way to open .avi files with Quicktime. This is mostly the fault of the shoddy audio support for most Mac video codec ports.

Mother of God, there cannot be a more cockblocking company than Apple. I swear they literally ask you to spend money in every action you take to enjoy any of their products. I have no idea how they still exist as a company when there's so many other options.

I don't want to be a smartass, but an avi file is just a container.

I know, but why make it so that Quicktime, a "MOVIE" player can't play 99% of the things that you can download off of the internet. (any Divx ripped movie/TV show will be in this format) It's obvious the reason for it, and that even something you spend $30 for, can't do something the 1000 other free movie players can do. Looks like I'll just be converting my movies using another program then...I just couldn't accept the fact that a movie player couldnt play a movie file as mainstream as .AVI.

I think the larger problem is that the iPhone (apparently) won't play anything that doesn't get the Quicktime 'seal of approval' first.

Yeah, essentialy, since they're both Apple its kind of like the chicken and the egg. Doesnt matter which comes first, they're both in the end the same thing. I'm totally going to petition to get my $30 back...first time I spent money on a piece of software in as long as I can remember, should have trusted my gut.

Because the Quicktime player only plays videos encoded with the quicktime codec. Try a better media player, one that accepts DirectShow filters and various codecs to play basically any time you throw at it.
