You know, Viking seems unlikely given the similarity to WAR, but then again, if you had pitched Scholar to me last week, I would've called you a nutcase. Anything seems possible now.

    Totally off-topic, but...

Falisa, may I ask where that Yigit DAT mod is from?

This would counter Wars Offense, Offense, Defense mix with Defense, Defense, Offence.

that is what i was thinking a defense warrior type, id like to see that, but i think SE is leaning towards completely unique things so will see

    Re: New Job - Scholar

I was thinking along these lines, trying to figure out how they could put in a new tank job that isn't a clone of PLD somehow, or a blinktank NIN clone, and it occurred to me : Tank job that tanked, not by being really really defensive, or by outright negating damage, but by giving the mob specific debuffs that applied only to the tank - along the lines of tanking by using 'Killer' effects, except attk down or acc down, for example, and they'd have to proc on a nearly 100 percent basis. These debuffs would give the tank a steady influx of hate holding tools... Pissing into the wind, of course, but I've been curious for a while as to how you could implement a tank job that wasn't an obvious carbon copy of an existing job? Most speculation I've read for Berserker / Viking / Rikishi seems to be describing a job that's... basically Warrior, with added 'RAWR'. WAR was originally intended to be 'the' tank job of the game, but that's obviously not how it's played out, especially since Ninja jumped into the fray... I haven't heard much speculation as to what the mechanics of a new tank job would be, just that everyone thinks SE should add one. 'course, SE has a longstanding reputation for surprising us, so we'll probably just have to wait and see.

They are used in The "Even More Gullibles Travels" - the quest that unlocks the opo-opo crown quest.

From what i've read white and black grimoires look like a JA that's used. Don't see why they couldn't manage without them since they should be able to cast without having grimoires up. Seems like grimoires just make casting easier. Might even be 40 seems like this is scholar's equivalent convert. This is just all speculation though.

Try reading Scholar's descritpion again. It specifically states the use of Grimoires as a sub and to me it looks like they can only use one type of magic at a time.

There is no time limit on this ability, so technically you could remain on one set of magic forever.

“White Grimoire” lets one specialize in White Magic by lowering cast times and reducing MP cost. In addition, Healing, Divine, and Enhancing skills are all raised, and unique abilities are unlocked. Conversely, Black Magic spells have their MP cost increased and casting time lengthened. However, you are free to switch back and forth at any time.

With Scholar as a support job, using the Black Grimoire will boost those respective skills, perhaps allowing White Mages to net better results with Drain and Aspir, or land the oft-resisted Paralyze on an enemy.

Given the simplicity of most jobs in FFXI, I'd imagine something like a "Guardian" that would be able to have massively high defense and vit (like retarded high full time 999/200+) while wearing high enmity and a huuueg shield, possibly doing reactive damage for some threat, but using a variety of shield bash type stuff mostly.

That's basically a prestige class of a Paladin minus White Magic with permaPhalanx lodged up some orifice, though, really. I think they were aiming for that when they made Paladin, although I'm not really sure - extreme damage reduction as an idea for a tank job is certainly a possibility, but especially considering the recent updates to Paladin I think (or hope) that they'd try and do something completely different.

If you reread the Scholar description, you'll see that using a particular Grimoire will incur penalties to the opposite school of magic by means of increasing MP cost and recast time. Which means that they'd have to be able to use it in order for it to be penalized.

you don't think there's a posibility of oracle tendancies with yin/yang magic as a scholar's own magic set? would seem silly of SQEN to make a new "subjob" their dual school mentality that SQEN gave them could facilitate y/y magic as well... all that said.. I hope it's not a rehashed rdm.
