The mistakes you're referring to are known as "overstrum"Originally Posted by Lockecole7
FC = no missed notes no overstrum, nearly perfectly played. It's still a FC if you like release some sustain early and stuff.
sp doesn't have to be perfect either for an FC.
And Locke, try GGaHT on Expert lol. >.< took me like 20 tries.
An FC simply means that your total combo is equal to the max notes in the song. Overstrums are allowed as long as they occur before the first note or after the last one.
Any tips on how to transfer to the orange key and back easier? My technique is holding be back from expert I can tell, and I know its probably my formation and how I approach the keys.Originally Posted by Exoduso
Not really, it's just practice. Eventually you'll get used to staying on the R/Y/B/O, while shifting your hand quickly back to the green with your index, and then once the green is done you'll switch your hand back to the R/Y/B/O formation.
After a while it'll become natural. Just start playing expert and go down the list in career until you get stuck, then go back to the top and start 5 starring the first tier songs... it's how I got through expert. By the time I made it back to the songs I was stuck at (and i'm talking about GH3, RB is much easier than gh3's songs heh) I was passing them easily.
The important thing you have to remember is that you'll have to shift a lot to the point where you have no problem moving from per say a Yellow/Orange double note hit to Green/Red. Attack/Die, All Right!/Interstate Love Song/All the Small Things/Dirty Little Secret/Interstate Love Song/Little Sister/Move Along/The Kill are all good DLC to practice the shifting on. Pretty easy songs, repetitive chart, but a lot of swapping between different double/triple notes.
I actually beat rock band on expert, while I still can't get GH3 on expert (damn you mosh1 ;![]()
Ok, thanks that helps alot, helps to know that I should keep my fingers on the bottom 4 while transfering to the top, I was doing the opposite and probably why it was so tough for me. (read: impossible).
Also, (mind Im incredibly new to these games, like 2-3days) I notice there's smaller and bigger notes in Rock Band. Like big bars and tinier ones. Is there a difference? I notice some notes seem like I can hit them without strumming (which seems pointless) as opposed to the ones I have to strum for. So far I've just been strumming for every note, since I dont really know any better. Is that pretty much correct?
Don't strum the small ones, they're hammerons and pulloffs...
Hell if you haven't done the tutorial yet, you probably should. In RB, you have to hit the ho/pos at the right time, you can't just hold the fret down and wait for the note to arrive like in gh3 (read = broken game not made by harmonix.) So the last big note you strum, and then if there's a series of smaller notes after it you just tap the fret buttons at the right time (just as it passes, hit the correct fret color.. no strumming.)
Also, get used to alt strumming if you haven't already... when Misterbob told me i'd have to alt strum eventually i thought he was kidding but holy shit, songs are damn near impossible for me now in BOTH GH and RB if I don't alt strum (that is, strumming up and down while holding the strum bar rather than just down strumming which is what i've been doing since GH2.)
When I moved up to expert in gh3 it was pretty hard, so I tried forcing myself to alt strum... I got used to it a lot faster than I thought I would (I was expecting a few weeks, I got it after 2-3 songs heh) and it made my life a lot easier from there on out.
If you have the rock band guitar, use the lower solo buttons when the solos start (when your screen turns blue and a percentage appears at the top of your chart), while in a solo these buttons act as the fret AND as the strum, so you don't have to touch the strum bar at all regardless of whether the note is big (regular) or small (hammeron/pulloff), so that makes it a lot easier. If you're using the gh controller you still have to strum as usual.
Hope it helps.
Uggh, so yeah after watching all of the tutorials and from what you've just told me, Ive been severely over-complicating alot of things. Guess thats why medium seemed somewhat hard for me, and anything beyond that impossible. Only thing is I have 3 days of that ingrained in my mind, so its gonna be tough to unlearn everything, but for the better. I already like originating in the RYBO position for the past hour that I've been trying, 5 starred the first couple hard songs, so things are coming into place. (yeah yeah I know they're cake compared to the rest.) Still having an issue realizing whats a hammer-on and a pull-off midsong since I pretty much just strummed and individually fretted EVERY SINGLE NOTE before knowing all of this...and what exactly the difference is between the two. (a hammer-on and a pull-off?) Or are they basically different words for the same thing, just depending on when the strum originates from.
Also the whole holding down a fret if its the higher note and being able to keep it held down while you fret another note thats lower than it is something Ill have to get used to. Im used to strumming all of these notes individually.

Whereas judging by the tutorial I can hold down the green and just fret the R, while strumming the two as they come.
As long as the notes are close enough, yes. Just hold down green the whole time and press red when it comes up and you only need to strum once.Originally Posted by Lockecole7
You can hold the lower note down if the ho/pos are close by... otherwise it won't work in rock band (but it WILL work in GH3)... like I said, RB is very strict on this issue, so if it's very close it'll work fine. If it's a bit spaced out and goes like this:
G
-R
G
with the R and 2nd G being hammerons/pulloffs, you'll probably drop the 2nd green if you try to hold it, press R, and then let go to nail the next one.
You shouldn't try to overthink it, the main thing with these games is practice practice practice (and no i don't mean practice mode unless you're a perfectionist or if you're stuck on some random song and you just can't pass a specific part..) Just enjoy it, it'll come naturally. I know it did for me.
You're not gonna be the best after 3 days, not even close. Hell it took me about 3 months to even be able to 5 star expert songs in GH3 consistently in the higher tiers (Sticken, Before I forget, etc.)... and I say 3 months because all i've played in GH2 was medium and hard, and hard seemed impossible for me in the beginning. When I got to Lou on GH3 on HARD I wasn't able to beat him... it just seemed way too hard and complicted. That was back in November, now I can beat him every time on hard, so it's obviously just practicing. Playing GH3 and RB at the same time probably helps because i'm getting the best of both worlds, but that's up to you.
I need to strum for both, correct? (assuming neither are hammer-on/pull-offs) Just that I dont need to green>strum, let go, red>strum, let go, green>strum, let go, red>strum, etc. I merely hold green>strum, red>strum, let go red, strum, red>strum, let go red, strum, etc?Originally Posted by Jedimasta
I know it seems like I'm overthinking things, but I'm VERY aware of how impossible something can be if you don't approach it the correct way and with a good foundation. The understanding I had of the game (Im not musically inclined to say the least) was next to nothing, and all of the intricacies that make doing the higher difficulties possible weren't known to me..so eventually I'd just frustrate myself by doing things the VERY, VERY hard way.
And I know you say just have fun, and trust me I do, I just want the experience of me playing with my friends to mimic that of actually playing together as close as possible, and I feel the harder difficulties mimic that best. Medium just feels too slow and it feels like Im playing only half the song, I enjoy hard at least because I feel more in tune with the song and it feels more true to life. Thanks alot for your help, I'm not expectating amazing things in just 3 days, but it does feel good to know Im on the right path now.
No, its much easier than you think. Strum on green, hold green and red, let go of red but hold on green and green will still strum without you having to strum. Rinse and repeat for however long it lasts. This can obviously also be done with multiple lines of notes. (See any expert song on GH3)Originally Posted by Lockecole7
That's just for HO/PO's, he's talking about the ones that aren't I think, um, "take this life" is a good example.Originally Posted by Jedimasta
So yeah, if it's not ho/po you gotta strum, but the game detects only the closest button to you (i.e. orange over blue), so yes you can hold the other note. This does not work on chords, no holding down green during a red+yellow chord for example.
omg I hate Take This Life with a passion lol, my hand hurts like fuck after like 2 minutes of strumming insanely fast. >.<

Up until the time that I actually played this song and did the vocals, on the tv show I honestly thought it was all mumbling aside from the chorus, and the Timmay! parts. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't bothering singing the real words lol, just muttered and yelled Timmy but then sang the chorus. Good times.
lol pretty much the only other words are "and the lords of the underworld, darkness fills my heart with pain" and maybe one other line
and girls sleep with girls or something heh.
