    back on the topic of ways the LHC could end the world/universe etc.

    I think my favorite is magnetic monopoles.

    who here has cut a magnet in half? now, when you do that; what do you get? hint: it's not a monopole

    I know what the scariest/coolest way would be.

    two words: Nuclear Fucking Zombies

    Wouldn't a person just get more and more dense as they approach a black hole, not "spaghettified", which would imply you aren't getting any more dense, just stretched out?

    The way I understand it, the idea is that the force exerted on one end of you is much greater than that exerted on the other end. so every few centimeters of you is accelerating at a different rate, and you get pulled apart. Along with whatever you were standing on of course. Density is something different.

    I may be wrong, it's been a while since i poked at magnet stuff... but don't you just get two magnets?

    That being said, if you could make a magnetic material that had no end, ie: moebius strip or maybe a strip of magnet that stretches around the globe...

    what the fuck would happen?

    Yeah, every particle of you would accelerate at slightly different rates... dunno about the density thing though...

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

    Anyone care to explain what they hope to discover with this experiment? I remember that it involved comfirming or understading things such as, all or at least one of them: Higgs bosson, anti-matter, trying to link relativity with quatum mechanics(i think it was through confirming the existence of other dimensions, confirming the string theory?), breaking down quarks and lepons(sp?) into smaller units(may be related to higgs). Anyone care to explain a little on what all of these are, how they relate to the LHC, and what their confirmation means for science?

    I know, a loaded question, but i already read some literature and i wan't to confirm i understood it. Also, i heard if none of these appear, scientist at least hope something new will be discovered. Is there 100% chance something new will be discovered , anything at all? They also call the higgs bosson, the god particle, right?

    You wont feel your weigth when you're free falling toward the black hole. The "weigth" is a force that attract you toward the mass (F=m * a or Force = mass * gravity). If there is no ground, you're just going to accelerate toward that mass. Tidal force is when gravitational force at different heigth are different. Universal gravity laws say the farther you are from a mass, the lower gravity is. Since gravity is extremely high in is case, the difference between your feet and your head is going to be extremly large, and your feet will start falling faster than your head

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/7/f...baf04b5463.png

    G is the gravitational constant ( G = 6.67 × 10^11 Nm²kg²) and r is the distance separating you from the black hole. Since your weigth is basicaly 0, you can simplify to whole thing to Acceleration= G*(mass)/r²

    Take a black hole 500 times heavier than our sun for example ( 1 ×10^32 kg) when you're 1 kilometer away from it.

    A= (6.67 × 10^?11) * (1 ×10^32) / 1000m = 6x10^21/1000 m/s² = 6x10^18 m/s²

    If your feet are 0.999kilometer away from the black hole
    acceleration= (6.67 × 10^?11) * (1 ×10^32) / 999m = 6x10^21/999 m/s² = 6.006x10^18 m/s²

    In other word, there would be a difference of 6 000 000 000 000 000 m/s² between the acceleration of your head and another part of your body. It's not hard to image what you would look like if your feet were going this fast, compared to your head.

    Yes, you get 2 magnets.

    If you curve a magnet around the globe , nothing special would happen. The closest N would be connected to the closest S at both extremity, and you would build the rest of the magnetic field the same way you do usually (like any U shaped magnet). A donut shaped magnet wouldn't have any magnetic field in the direction of the circle, but there would be one going from left to right. Havent done any magnetism in 5 years, so meh, might be wrong

    Depend what you mean by "something new". There is a chance no new interactions or particles will be observed, but it should help our understanding of physics no matter what.

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

    Ah, I see. Although this does remind me of something I was wondering before... I know that Aristotle mistakenly believed objects had different accelerations due to gravity proportional to their mass, and thought that two objects in a vacuum would fall at different rates (albeit an infintesimal difference, due to the relative mass of the earth). He was proven wrong, when it was shown that two objects experience the exact same acceleration due to gravity regardless of mass, with no difference however microscopic between the two.

    Now, this seems counter-intuitive when you look at that equation, which suggests the acceleration experienced by a pair of bodies is proportional to their masses and inversely proportional to the distance between them. From that, I would have thought Aristotle would have been right, and that the sum of the (negligible) acceleration of the earth and the acceleration of the less massive body would be (negligibly) smaller than the sum of the acceleration of the earth and the more massive body.

    right, you get two magnets.

    if you made a magnet that had no end you'd still have two poles, they just wouldn't be on the 'ends' of the bar.

    (a monopole is a magnet that is 'only' north; which is pretty mindbending in terms of classical electromagnetism)

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

    You're correct in a way, gravity is always calculated from the center of mass for any given systems. If you lift an heavy object in your hand, the center of mass would change (/r² factor). However, like you said, it would be negligible unless you take something really massive. Need to keep in mind that both objects you're comparing count toward the total mass, so it won't change much (unless you want to count the non-uniform distribution of the mass on Earth). G*[(m1+m3)+m2]/r² or G[(m1+m2)+m3]/r² is going to give you the same result

    I think Aristote believed there was a significant difference between the acceleration of 2 different objects (would need to wiki it to be sure)

    It's the same thing for the force both object do on each other

    I'm getting a nice laugh at the people in youtube comparing this to the tower of Babel and how we're going to get smitted(sp?) for "trying to play god". But then again, it's youtube.
