    Re: The Metal Thread

Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Stratovarius were my favorite epic/melodic metal band. Nightwish new album is amazing so far with the new singer. Epica is pretty good if you like nightwish

Most bands mentioned in this thread are pretty good and worth of try.

    Some of my favorites:

The Absence - Great melodic death band from the US surprisingly.
Cryptopsy - Some of the best technical death there is, None So Vile is a masterpeice
Grave - Just great death metal
    Dismember - same
Bloodbath - Death metal with some of the great names of a lot of metal bands in it, heh

First off, speed metal isnt a type. Its called Shred or Power metal depending on the songs. and Second off Dragonforce is TERRIBLE at Shred. Google some people like Joe Satriani, Paul Giblert, Steve Vai, or John Petrucci. Those are real shredders, some of the best players in the world. Dragonforce shit is just sixteenth notes played in sets of 4's.

Im not a huge metal fan but, Slayer, Mastodon, lamb of god, Black Label society are good. If your really into black/death metal theres Cannibal Corpse. I really hate their music but if your into it, knock yourself out.

RacerX is also pretty good, although they are an 80's metal band and broke up years ago.

Dragon Force is bleh, and their vocalist is horrible (for metal anyway).

Cannibal Corpse is epic scaryness. Try some Dark Army, I uploaded a few of his songs on youtube, the guy does pretty good for being a one man band. http://youtube.com/user/SephYuyX

    I agree completely.

As far as "epic" goes, you can go different ways. There's the epic side of power metal, but it's overall cheesy. Then there's the more epic side of black metal with bands like:

Summoning "Stronghold," "Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame," and "Oath Bound" specifically
    Graveland "The Fire of Awakening"
    ForeFather "The Fighting Man"
    Woodtemple any
Primordial "Spirit The Earth Aflame" and "Journey's End"
    Menhir "Ziuwari"
Golden Dawn "The Art of Dreaming"
Falkenbach "Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty..." and "Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri..."
    Iuvenes "Riddle of Steel"
Hollenthon "Domus Mundi" and "With Vilest of Worms to Dwell" (strong classical influence)

    Re: The Metal Thread

lol @ some of the bands that people think are metal in this thread

Anyways, while it's not really "metal" Dream theatre and all their side projects are good (listening to really good guitar mostly)

    "epic" metal:
    Tiamat
    Dragonforce I guess
Rainbow is pretty good, it was formed by Ritchie Blackmore (the deep purple guitarist)
    Finntroll is also good
bands that I guess you would call heavy metal:
    Opeth
    In flames
    Children of Bodom
    Lamb of god
And of course there's good older stuff:
    Zeppelin
    Judas Priest
    Blue oyster cult

Now if you want stuff like power metal there's more mainstream stuff:
    Metallica
    Megadeth
    Slayer
    Anthrax
    GWAR

And some other random metal bands that I like:
    Nile
Iron maiden (yes I like iron maiden fuck you if you dont)
    Gojira
    Heaven shall burn (is ok...)

I could go on for hours, really lol.

Oh yeah, don't forget The Sword. As they say, everyone either loves or hates Dragonforce.

They shouldn't even be considered metal.

I honestly never thought A7X was considered metal until I read it on wikipedia.

Between the Buried and Me = freakin' awesome. The beginning of that second link starts off kinda quiet/melodic, but it changes quickly from there. They go all over the place, musically, and you can hear 5-10 second snippets of almost any band you could imagine on their latest CD.

Dream Theater, Emperor, Mayhem, Arch Enemy, Cradle of Filth, The Kovenant, Kamelot, Old Man's Child. Trans-siberian orchestra is good too.

Also there is Ayreon, its not really just metal but more of a mix of almost every kind of music put into 1 cd that tells a story. Each CD has different singers from bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Threshold. Should check them out if it seems like it is of intrest.

I quite like Ayreon. The guy's pretty damn cheesy at times though, and doesn't seem to realise when he's gone over the line into something camper than Rush and Genesis combined. Though it's frequently not metal at all, straying into folk-cheese and random prog meanderings, his last work, The Human Equation, contains some damn rockin' stuff, like "Day Three: Pain", which features James LaBrie from Dream Theater and Devin Townsend from Strapping Young Lad.

The one gripe I have with Ayreon is that his use of different singers on every album leads to a certain lack of, for lack of a better word, consistency. Still, the prospect of having Michael Åkerfeldt, James LaBrie and Devin Townsend on the same song made up for the cheese and the bunch of dud songs on that album.

Adding Devin Townsend and everything he's done. The guy's got a freakishly good voice, a stupid haircut, and he's done everything from singing on a Steve Vai concept album to heavy industrial thrash-metal with Strapping Young Lad. In my view the man can do no wrong. Except for the haircut.

    Re: The Metal Thread

I really liked in flames, that is the only metal band I will listen to, i am all alternative rock now. Their Clayman and Soundtrack to Your Escape albums were amazing.

and I was just kidding about dragon force, didn't know if anyone caught the sarcasm. I'll add more exclamation points next time
