When I got a new comp and needed a new copy of FFXI, I had to like dig behind a few other PC games on the shelf to find 1 copy FFXI.Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX

Odd... I was out shopping around and noticed that even the little game store outlet in the corner of Hollywood Video has a stand-alone rack of FFXI (well, one side of it). GameStop has a few copies on a shelf, but from past experience, they usually have a wall full of it on display behind the counter when an expansion is released. It gets the same treatment other games do when they come out or release an expansion.Originally Posted by Falisa
Maybe there's just more FFXI players around here than elsewhere.

Yeah this was in Best Buy. The gamestop I went to in the mall around me didn't even have any in stock. I dunno if they all got bought out or they didnt care to restock it.
I didn't reserve ToAU, and I got Gamestops only copy. I guess they don't sell enough to stock more then 1 or 2 around here.
I just reserved my copy today when I was in Gamestop. They said I should since they probably wouldn't be getting much in.
I've never preordered anything before. So basically, I go to the GameStop today, tell them I wanna preorder 2 copies. Then go in on the 21st and pick them up?
If I go on the 21st after I preorder and they don't have them for some reason, can I request my money back so I can go scavenge other stores looking for it?
Yeah, you just head over and say you want to pre-order. They'll take your information and you pay a deposit of a minimum of $5 up to the full price per copy. If you change your mind and don't want the game anymore you can cancel the pre-order and get that deposit back in full. You'll get a call on the ship date to let you know the game will be in the next day. When you go in to pick it up just bring your pre-order receipt (preferred) or a photo ID. Naturally you'll pay whatever the remaining balance was on your order, if any. It's easy, guarantees you get a copy at your store, and helps out the employee you placed the pre-order with (they get bonuses for selling pre-orders). I can't think of a reason not to pre-order if you're planning on getting a game.
Odd. I preorder from Gamestop and I've never gotten a phone call. That's unsurprising as they don't take my name or phone number or anything. They just tell me to come back on the date with my receipt.Originally Posted by Xanthe

The phone calls are hit or miss. I got one for Halo 3 and Contra 4, but not for Call of Duty 4. It's not telling you anything you can't find online, though - they just say the game was shipped today (the ship date on any web site), and should be in the store by tomorrow afternoon.Originally Posted by ThistleChaser

Yeah, the phone call IS automated, and you might not make the call list depending how close to ship date you pre-order. Kind of a "dur", but you also won't get a call if they don't have your up to date phone number. Not getting the call definitely doesn't exclude you from getting your copy, it's just a nice reminder.
Availability will likely be sketchy. I remember when ToAU came out I was paying for/using an LS-mate's account (temporarily, as it turned out). I preordered one copy from Amazon I think, and just figured on picking up a second copy for that account from a store on lunch or something. No joke, it took me around two -months- to see a copy appear in EB, and I never saw it in Wal-mart or whatever. Now granted, I never really went and hunted around past the few stores near where I worked at the time, but I would kinda expect WoTG to be even less widespread.
Preordering is good since that means they'll at least get shipped the game. Do make sure you pick it up promptly though, as the official Gamestop policy now is like 72 hours or something and some will really stick to that. I had Bioshock collector's edition for PC that I preordered, got a call and all, but because I went in on friday instead of thursday they'd already sold it...but not before ringing it up for me before checking >_>
Wound up getting one transferred over, which took a few more days.
For WoTG, I preordered from their site...that way I don't need to worry about a side-trip on my way home. Shipping isn't free, but neither is gas.
I've pretty much given up on the gaming boutique type stores though. I don't want used current-gen games that may or may not be resurfaced, I don't want a gut copy of something with a zillion stickers all over it, etc. Most times I go to Gamestop (and I used to work there), I just leave wondering why I bothered. It's becoming less of a specialty store, and more the game section of a Best Buy where everything has a preowned doppleganger for $5 less.
Actually, that's being unkind to Best Buy...they have a better PC section by far.
In the UK preorder via the net is the only way to go with a game like FFXI.
There is hardly any exposure for the game in most high street game stores, and it was only really the 360 release that saw copies crop up here and there, but even that can be a pain to track down now.
I've got my copy of WotG on preorder from play.com, I got my ToAU from them too and they delivered on release day so I was happy, hopefully i can strike lucky twice and get it release day again.
Because they won't get the copy that you pre-ordered and then lie to you about getting more in tomorrow. (True story.)Originally Posted by Xanthe

Ahh yeah, I forgot to mention that it depends on the store. Some can be really good about it (like mine), others just plain suck. I suppose it all comes down to the quality of the store's employees.Originally Posted by Septimus
This is why I'm wary of pre-ordering. I've heard nothing but horror stories about GameStop/EBgames.Originally Posted by Xanthe
If your store is somewhere in NYC I'll go there and preorder from you!!!
My local gamestop doesn't cary PC titles in general, so I had to pre-order it yesterday when i picked up mario galaxy (which i had pre-ordered as well). They said i can pick it up the 21st.![]()
Re: GameStop orders/reservations
I'm a manager for a GameStop store here in Ohio. As of yesterday we have several PC reservations and a couple reservations for XBOX and PS2.
What people have said before me is fairly accurate; with a title like this most stores will only order a couple of extra copies beyond the number of reservations they receive.
If you play this game you're almost sure to buy WotG anyhow. My advice is to be safe and just make the $5 reservation.
Most GameStops will have WotG in store on the 21st with maybe a small handful getting it late afternoon on the 20th based on their location to the warehouse and demand for the product.
