job interview clothing question

so, so i'm going to this place to fill out an app and an on the spot interview.

my problem is i don't have a suit to wear, so i decided on a black plaid & white main (silky)polyester dress shirt ( something like you would wear to a birthday party or if you were going out somewhere with friends ) and jeans.

now the problem is i have blue or black jeans, not really knowing much about it i would have worn the black jeans to compliment the black plaid stripes. I asked a couple friends though and they said the blue would be better.

Now bg, i pose the question to you. blue or black?

What job, for what company? What is the environment in which you'll be filling out the application?

The past few jobs I have worked at didn't like blue jeans because they are too casual. Black jeans have worked just fine everywhere I have worked though.

it's a job for a security firm, and the place I'm going is a suite and the company shares the entire building with a lot of other businesses.

(The question was just for the interview, if i do get the job most likely i'll be in uniform. Thanks for the reply though, any insight is helpful in the long run)

I've just worn regular clothes to interviews, then they usually just told me that I couldn't wear blue jeans to work.

i've never had the need for a suit till now, i realize it's the best option but it's not applicable at this time.

Both of your options are terrible. Unless they tell you to dress work casual, etc.. for the interview then dress in a suit. Wether you want to believe it or not your appearance is a large portion of the interview. My boss and I used to spend hours making fun of people after interviews because of how poorly they were dressed & or how badly they reeked of smoke.

That said, since you are dressing for failure anyhow go with Black Jeans. Blue Jeans are waaay to casual / Blue Collar.

Exactly, often when in High Tech the person interviewing you will be dressed work casual. It may seem strange; but this is how it is. Once you are past the interview thats when you find out what you can really wear. Heck, I wear a hoody and khakis were are a few sizes too large for me (<3 Belts & being too cheap to buy new cloths since I lost weight).

I came to work in a pair of beige cargo pants and a button up shirt, later to find out that EVERYONE dresses like that at my job. Even the CEO. All depends on the work environment I suppose.

As a rule of thumb, it's almost always better to be overdressed than underdressed, regardless of the situation. This is especially true in the workplace, but I think applicable to most areas in life. If you can afford it, you may want to consider buying slacks like people have suggested, and a white or powder blue dress shirt and tie. You may have a uniform when you get the job, but you DON'T have the job yet, and it behooves you to put your best foot forward, as the cliche goes. So dress up, iron your shirt, shine your shoes, smile and be friendly, the rest is up to you.

The only thing that sucks about being a guy is you really don't have a lot of choices as far as business casual, formal or work attire is concerned.

[Edit: If you can't buy slacks/shirt/tie, at the minimum 1) wear deodorant but 2) do not wear cologne, and 3) leave your cell phone in your car, or in your bag on silent mode, not on vibrate.]

Ive interviewed in ripped up hollister blue jeans and sandals. I knew I had the best resume for the job and I know how I interview. Been working there for 2 years and some of my superiors still give me shit about the clothes I wear (albeit in jest). Now I'm in a position where I do the interviewing. Unless someone was completely unsanitary, I could care less what they were to wear as long as their attire doesnt reflect poorly on the company (offensive clothing) and they had the credentials to do the job properly. Security, from what I notice when visiting some of our customers (I never see the same guard for more than a few months), have a really high turnover ratio, so they'll probably take who they can get.

All the stuff mentioned so far I've gone over in my head and believe me if i had or could afford to buy cloths or a suit for the interview i would but it's basically impossible right now, what i mentioned was my best dress attire i have and can afford.

as far as hygiene and smell i wouldn't dare go out stinking or looking like a slob, especially to a job interview. (thanks for the advice about no cologne talus)

and i don't have a cell phone so i don't have to worry about leaving it anywhere, on or off


if there is more advice to be had i'm still all ears though guys & gals, keep it coming.

You need to run out and get a few pairs of Dockers.

Dress your best, it's a job interview, if you don't want to dress as best you can it means you don't want the job as badly as someone else.

get a pair of black slacks from walmart for $10 and a pair of cheap dress shoes for about the same price. after the interview return them. (keep all the stickers and tags and shit though and don't scuff the shoes).
