As someone who's been to a great deal of conventions, yes, you should have photo ID, though it matters little where it came from. School ID, Work ID, Driver's Licence, whatever you wish to use.

Do you need an ID just for registration, or every time you enter as well?

I'd imagine just for registration. After that you should have a badge which will grant you access in/out. At least thats how it was last year and pretty much how every other convention works.
