In Mario 64, I got just enough stars to move on, and then went back, like you.

In Galaxy, I'm trying to get as many stars as possible before moving on.

I get the three basic stars in every level, plus any hidden stars or comet stars that get in my way, but after I get those three, I move on. It's kinda fun getting to the next hub only to find every single new area already open because you have 15+ more stars than you are expected to have.

Circuit City will have Mario for $35 on Black Friday in case anyone is cheap like me. If this has already been posted, sorry. XD

I'm torn about my path, lastnight I was trying to get as many stars as possible and then move on. I think starting tonight I'm gonna go back to my M64 playstyle, cause theres too much stuff I want to explore. I hardly see me getting bored with the notion of exploring the earlier galaxies anyway!

    Re: Mario Galaxy

You can't fully complete any of the main galaxies until after you beat the game, since the Purple Comet hasn't been unlocked.

And oh god, when it unlocks, you're going to have some "fun". Luigi's Purple Coins (on the Toy galaxy) and the purple coin mission on the Dreadnaught galaxy are ridiculously frustrating and difficult. The Luigi one especially lol

A few of the Daredevil comet runs are nasty too.

Completion times (This assumes you NEVER use a guide/ask for help):
Main game: 8-12 hours (depending on how good you are, a lot of Mario 64/Sunshine experience will make you lean towards 8, maybe even less, as you only need 60 stars this time around)
Full game: ~20 hours (Currently at 16 hours with 97 stars, 20ish seems about right).

Not exactly a long game, but incredibly amazing and well-designed. With a guide you could probably complete it in 5 hours, so DO NOT USE A GUIDE.
Not to mention 120 stars = unlocks Luigi for another playthrough. Note that Luigi's game really isn't any different. Luigi just jumps farther/higher, runs faster, and has a harder time stopping. The galaxies and star requirements remain identical, so to the person who said the game has "241 stars", thats really not true, you're just collecting the same stars twice.. (The one extra star is a really easy mission on the first planet of the game where you collect coins, it doesnt even really count as a star honestly).

TBH i hate 3D mario games.

nothing quite like a side-scrolling 2D platformer imo.

And the way I play is to get all the stars possible before moving on.

    Re: Mario Galaxy

I went to toys r us just to pick up their advertisement for "buy mario galaxy get a free 25$ gift card," then went to Circuit City, got it priced matched, and now have the game + a 25$ circuit city gift card =D

This whole price matching thing made me realize something too...

I think the easiest possible way to get something like this is to get the ad that has the advertisement, go to somewhere else like bestbuy that doesn't have a black friday mario galaxy deal, and then get them to price match it, because the chances of you getting a 35$ copy at circuit city are quite small.

Not that game scores are any definitive measure of a game, nor that anyone in this thread has really downtalked the game, Mario Galaxy is rocking a 98% with 28 reviews at metacritic.

I'm just glad to see the series back on track, since Mario Sunshine was the first Mario game I didn't even bother to beat (didn't even get more than 20 stars). Probably going to use the $25 gift card from TRU to get a Wii point card and download some of the older Mario games to complete the package.

You're probably right, only problem is I'm not sure where I'm gonna find the ad in this Alabama craphole. :\

Up to about 76 stars, I think my playtime is at about 10-11 hours now. Like the above poster, I play an area and get all 3 main-objective stars, plus the hidden star if I find it. I check for comets regularly and seek them out.

I've completed all minus 2 stars+hidden stars+additional areas for the first 3 hubs, unlocked the green star hub and did those 3. Currently working through the engine room.

The final Bowser fight is really cool, even if it wasn't all that hard. Got about 35 stars left, and figured I should beat Bowser to unlock the Purple Comet. It almost seems like there are two levels of difficulty for stars: Easy, and Oh Shit What the Fuck I Didn't I HATE YOU Hard.

Luigi being a bonus isn't a spoiler, Nintendo announced it a while ago.

Which craphole? Because I live in Tuscaloosa and didn't have a problem with it.

Meh, I live about 25 miles east of Birmingham, in a small town called Moody. I'll probably have to drive to Trussville or something to find an ad. :\ Would it be in a newspaper or anything by any chance?

Anyone else gotten a message from Mailtoad sent to your Wii yet? I noticed my Wii glowing blue when I got back from class so I checked out my messages and found that Mailtoad told me that Luigi had gone missing again! Just another cool thing about this amazing game.

    Re: Mario Galaxy

Purple Coin Stars are so random. Sometimes its just walking around the level finding 100. That is fun. But then I did the one in the Haunted House level and... holy shit. 1:00 to collect 100 purple coins using those stupid blue star things in a place with those bouncy meats and mines all over. And just when I got 100 and thought I was finally done, oh wait, I have to get 100 coins AND the star in one minute! God freaking damn. Never want to do that star again.
