Yeah, but the way he does them are pretty funny. Kind of like, over exaggerated and in your face. Gets kinda olde fast though :/.
His Vicious Circle thing on HBO was hilarious... everything else I've seen from him was kind of meh... I guess Tricen hit the nail on the head.
it's like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, fucking amazing the fist time I saw it. Then the next 200 times I saw it, it got so annoying. You can only hear the same joke over and over so many times. What sucks, is that most comedians don't really write their own stuff. (I could be wrong, I was under the impression most do.) Could just be comedic talk show hosts.
A buddy of mine went as Dane Cook for Halloween. He already looks like a douchebag, so he had that covered, and just walked around with a microphone enthusiastically telling bad jokes about nothing while kicking the air.
It was spot on.
To me no one comes close to George Carlin, who is by far my favorite comedian. I see his shows, watch his HBO specials, listen to his CDs and even read one of his books, and there is rarely a time where he reuses a joke. He writes all his own stuff too, which I think is amazing. He makes Dane Cook look like a high school clown (not far from the truth it seems). George isn't even in his prime anymore, I think he's been a comedian for over 30 years now and he still blows these younger guys out of the water.

Went to the show last night, never laughed so hard/often in my life. And I don't know what jokes he was telling in other cities, but he had like a 90/10 new to old ratio of jokes here, (I'm familiar with all of his works, so the above ratio is pretty accurate) and even the old ones were incorporated differently so that you really didnt see them coming. This man is a genius in person, I was 5 rows from the stage and he's really progressed his humor since the days of his old work.
To be honest, I don't understand the hate. I can see how he just isn't your piece of pie, but I get the vibe from 75% of people who dislike him, either havent heard alot of his work or are just jumping on the bandwagon train of dane haters cause its cool to go against the grain of 2million+ people who like him. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the above comedians, especially demitri martin, although I do feel George Carlin though intelligent in his humor, is alil over-rated. People say all Dane Cook does is just yell to deliver a joke and kick the air, I really don't see how its any different then George Carlin's "angry at everything schtick" and just about every other comedian who has their "style". It's how he performs a joke, it's his way of taking an average joke, (the shoe one) and adding alot to it and fleshing it out by having you visualize the event in your mind.
Anyway, didn't mean to bump this, just thought that those would know I ended up going and that it was thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks for the discussion.
Somewhere on the intarweb I found a Dane Cook translator.
It makes whatever you type all caps and puts !!! on the end.
Basically a rehash of what most people have said already but...there's just something "off" about Dane Cook. I've seen him twice--I laughed my ass off the first time I saw him. Second time, over a year and a half later, and he was telling the exact. same. jokes. Never laughed once. Saw his HBO special (Vicious Circle) and chuckled once or twice, but was annoyed more than anything else less than 30 minutes in.
His comedy basically never really "evolves"--you're never laughing at the material, you're laughing at him, and I think that's part of what makes him become so stale so quickly.
Now, if you want good? Bill Hicks is a goddamn genius. I'm almost glad that he never had the chance to go downhill from where he got to![]()
