Sam's Have A skill in parry
Even with capped Parrying Skill + Merits, Parry wouldn't proc enough at this time to warrent tanking efficiency as SAM.Originally Posted by Neb

Not to say Parry is some saving glory with tanking on SAM, but just the idea of tanking on SAM isn't so impossible as most think. I don't even feel like debating it much anymore.
Seconded. My SAM is nowhere near god status and my parrying is only 169, but I still notice the procs, and used wisely Seigan+Third Eye works wonders.Originally Posted by RKenshin
Their goal seems to be to give people a new tank job to level up because all the tank players already have their PLD and/or NIN leveled up and aren't interested in leveling another one. They want more low level tanks. So, whatever job it is, it will be a job that most people have NOT leveled up yet.
I think that crosses WAR off the list. Every melee player has at least War37 already. No new tank population to be mined there. So, that points at one of the other jobs. Hard to say which job it will be, though. All kinds of jobs have the potential to be a good "tank". You could turn just about any of the melee jobs into a successful low level tank with the addition of a spike hate ability and a mitigation ability (defense or evasion).
Don't get me wrong about SAM tanking, lol. I've been trying to get at that for a minute-- I have just over 200 Parrying skill on SAM and still working on it. I'm just saying that it won't be as effective, even in clinch tanking, if you know what I mean. Also the problem of magic damage is there. Also would need to add something to SAM that would push the norm into wanting to use them as tanks and not DD.Originally Posted by Xanthe

new tank will be MNK
they will just alter guard the way shield was altered for pld and maybe up the procrate on counter voila you just got a tank (maybe with a few configurations here and there).
that just sounds like making /war a more mp efficient sub (tho nin sub would still be best there)Originally Posted by Damane
Maybe also lowering Chakra recast in addition to Guard changes?
This is exactly what they need to tank. Barring the groundshattering addition of 40 defense;Originally Posted by Asrun
Could give Samurai a 'Parrying Mastery' trait. Give them a trait not unlike the PLD Shield Mastery trait, combine it with Seigan. I could see them doing this.
TBH, no matter what they do to an existing job to make it more "tankey" the biggest hurdle will be telling the player base "Hey, you can tank with THIS!" and having people accept it over the already established working tanks. For that, it might be easier to make the whole new job.
Speaking of which, I think Fencer and Geomancer should be added, both as tanks.
Whatever they manage to do, its going to be something minor that will only affect low level exp. They're not going to buff WAR to where they can take dmg like a PLD or evade like a NIN. Same for MNK, being the other likely choice; imagine how broken it would be to have tanking traits in merits.
Personally I could give a shit less on what they do, they already said it won't be for tanking HNMs, it won't be enough to substitute the complete blow-off to what everyone wanted -a new tank job.
On a side note, I can't wait to join a PT full of female dancers(no galkas) and schoolgirls when the expansion comes out :D
I'm betting it's like BLU or something. Or maybe PUP.
In all seriousness they probably could make BLU a tank pretty easily.

For S-E rep, I KNOW YOU WILL READ THIS: please, please, please, consider using BitTorrent to deploy patches... at least the ones bigger than 20MB. (It will ease traffic on YOUR servers also)

Still would not surprise me if the new tank is meant to be BST.
Look at the changes it's getting in this patch. Pet enmity spike. Adjustments that seem to favor being able to heal pets faster (faster Stay regen, new food to cure status ailments, shorter reward timer...
Figure, BST/WAR, 'voke, Snarl, pet takes most damage...that, to me, sounds like the start of making BST a viable small group/XP tank. Or at least something like a first-voke merit party member.
'course, it'd be contingent on being able to keep pets alive and keep hate...so sorta remain to be seen. WAR or MNK or something wouldn't have that issue due to direct healing ability and easily being able to generate hate.
Far as "moderately popular"...I'd say BST is, it's just a job that's rarely seen in XP/merit despite that a number of people play it.
This is what I'm hoping for as well.Originally Posted by arshesney
