    [spoiler:31oauwx6]http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Lilies

    the text from Vol. 2 explains the backstory for our "new" foes;

It was then that Maryse's travels brought her into contact with five other such outcasts and their destinies were bound together forever. These six individuals bade farewell to their troubled pasts and created a new coven of witches--the Dark Lilies.

After the formation of the Dark Lilies, the six witches resurrected ancient spells of destruction for their own protection. Their actions earned them even greater enmity from the common people.

The Dark Lilies found no welcome in the lands of Altana's children.

Chased from the civilized world, the witches looked north for sanctuary, and eventually found themselves knocking on the gates of Castle Zvahl--the stronghold of the Shadow Lord.

Perhaps this turn of events was inevitable.

    http://images.wikia.com/ffxi/images/...-2006%29-3.png

The six were granted audience, and spoke with an Ahriman that stood in attendance to the Shadow Lord.

"A fascinating proposal. You wish to serve the Shadow Lord? Then you must enter the darkness in which we thrive!"

It was at that moment that the form and speech of mortal beings was stripped from the Dark Lilies, and they were reborn as monstrous shades.

Not long after their transformation, the Great War descended upon Vana'diel.

The Dark Lilies were placed at the forefront of the beastman armies, and used their tremendous powers to batter the allied forces of Altana.

Rumors of ethereal witches wielding ancient spells spread quickly across the battlefield and struck dread into the hearts of all who heard them.

But even with their awesome might, the six witches failed to prevent the eventual defeat of the beastmen.

I have to commend SE on the Altana storylines, interesting, engaging and beautifully animated as ever.
A special applause goes to the German translators this time, normally the German translation is rather dry and devoid of obscure references, but this time the managed an nice little pun. The title you get for the fight mission is a play on the German title of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe".
Very fitting and enjoyable. I can't wait to know what happens next.

What's really interesting to me about this patch's missions is that it made it excessively clear that the missions are going to have no effect whatsoever on the actual world. Walk into La Vaule (sic?) and it's full of mobs. Cutscene starts and it's this nice peaceful village that gets attacked, but you prevail triumphantly, and even clear the area of the "extra" powerful threat. Then you walk out and are completely surrounded by beastmen. I dunno, was kinda hoping we'd really see and experience the changes in the world, rather than just having cutscenes while every zone is already pretty much exactly what it will be a year from now when the war is "over" as far as missions are concerned. I guess this was kinda obvious all long, really, but it's really clear in this one.

Oh well, at least the cutscenes are good, and the blatant homophobia and pedophelia are quite amusing. I really hope there's some freaking epic battles on the way.[/spoiler:2n1nbeqk]

epical you should prob spoiler that for people that are just looking for directions >.>
[spoiler:2n1nbeqk]Problem is, I'm not sure what reason the mother would have, for telling Lilisette that it was Jueno, instead of La Vaule. Why would location matter so much, that she would lie about it? Especially since if the mother is Portia, she was right there.

However, no one else seemed to know what kind of wound Rags got. It could be that Rags will fight in Jueno later, and Portia just mistakenly believes that's when he was wounded. But it would seem odd that she doesn't recall that Rags was wounded in La Vaule, then.

Going with Rocl; all things indicate we are in the past, not alternate dimension. Things we do will affect the present, however it seems the effects will be small. Mostly, it seems we are there to prevent history from being changed too much, and everyone's knowledge of us will be wiped at WOTG's end.[/spoiler:2n1nbeqk]

[spoiler:1scghqn2]But don't forget, she also stated that La Vaule has been occupied by the Orcs much sooner than it should have been. Davoi and Parbough Mines weren't supposed to be occupied by beastmen until after the Crystal War, events are clearly progressing in a way that they are not supposed to. So chances are that he did get cursed much sooner than he was supposed to, and possibly by someone different.

My current conjecture is that Lilith is someone new who came to the past to disrupt the Crystal War and swing things in the opposite direction. She seems to be too big of a player to have never been mentioned before, plus there does need to be an impetus for us to have gone back to the past in the first place.[/spoiler:1scghqn2]

Still standing by my old old old theory that we're going to be in the Hydra Corps, there will be some epic ass tear-jerking CSes in Xarc [S] involving (Lilith now, it appears) setting up an awesome battle/ambush to turn the tide of our charge to the Castle, where the rest of the Corps stay behind, and send us ahead to Zvahl.

Insert some key npc we've grown fond of saying "we'll be right behind you" and then we charge in, focused on the Shadow Lord.

Cue Lilith, most likely, doing something involving Atomos/Diabolos perhaps, the rest of the Corps being sucked into Dynamis while we charge in for the final battle, etc.

We exit after winning, finding not the carnage of battle and one side or the other victorious... instead, nothing...

Nothing but the people originally credited with defeating the Shadow Lord, showing up after the fact, as we get drawn into the walk of shadows, perhaps.

My hope is that if we do fight the Shadow Lord, he is the same power as the 5-2 battle version, then the real fight with Lilith or whomever happens.

I would prefer that we not fight the Shadow Lord at all and just let Zeid defeat him the way it was supposed to be.

Hell, wouldn't be unlikely for us to be fighting alongside them a la Prishe/Emoboy vs Promathia.

Course, Sept would doom his poor group by deliberately wiping time and time again just to go back and fight alongside Zeid one more time.

Another reason why I doubt that we will fight the Shadowlord. We met our Loli-heroine for the expansion, so chances are we will be in the fight with her.

I hope to hell that the next expansion has a scantily clad, adult Galka as the main hero. I WANT MY TURN DAMN IT!

    Damn pedos...

    Just for you, Sept.

I did think it was funny with her name though, I read it as Lolisette at first.

Trio'd the fight. RDM/WHM SCH/RDM SMN/WHM. The SMN used leviathan to tank the dragon, while my friend(SCH) used Lumiohelix, and a couple Blizzard IVs. I stuck to Thunder III and kept barfira up(for the occasional fire breath). The only thing that screws up the fight is draw in and voidsong. Avatar rarely lost hate and we kept our distance.

Pretty easy fight when it doesn't go awry.

I think our Loli-th is also evil. Its pretty apparent she is going to be part of that "Dark Lilies" coven that ressurrects ancient magic and joins the shadow lord.

    :D

Maybe she is a descendant from the original six and has come back through the maws to the past to make sure the Dark Lilies don't lose. Which would explain why events are happening faster than they should. Loli-th is using her knowledge of future events to help the beasties.

Maybe if we're lucky they'll add missions with that minor chocobo update. And the next stage of Nyzul relics.
    Some questions:
[spoiler:idzeplhq]-I'm confused. Lili says she's from the Vana'diel "of many years past" or something. Doesn't she mean she's from the same era as us?

-What are people's thoughts on the "emptiness" mentioned? Possibly related to CoP's Emptiness?

-Was it ever explicitly said that Tavnazian Fomors were just soldiers slaughtered in the Battle of Tavnazia? Maybe they were members of Lilith's forces?
I know it's kinda implied since killing Orcs, Gigas, and tauri lowers your Fomor hate, but maybe they just regret joining the beastmen or were forced into their status. Think of the backstory of Eldieme/Fei'Yin Fomors mentioned in the Spiral Hell quest (Elvaan children kidnapped and forced to drink a potion or something) or the Undead Swarm's Fomors (Fallen Imperials & Experimental Undead).[/spoiler:idzeplhq]

Go up to where you watch that last cutscene for CoP.

Tell me there isn't something strange about the party of Fomors that pops there.

    They were soldiers.

    Re: WoTG Mission discussion

    Speculation about the storyline:
WARNING: Really freaking long. Also details latest missions, so if you haven't finished the newest ones yet, DO NOT READ.
[spoiler:14h39s34]Okay, first of all, that damn cryptic riddle/story/limerick thing from the Spitewarden.
"For emptiness itself is not to be sustained.
The whole of creation abides right at this point.
Both good and evil, both the sacred and the profane."

I think this is talking about the CoP emptiness. But the second two lines,
"The whole of creation abides right at this point."
Makes me think this isn't just the forces of Altana's win at stake, but all of Vana'diel is in danger of utter destruction. Which may mean we are under the threat of the emptiness in the past.

Rocl (I think he speculated) seemed right in that the Beastmen have just as much to lose as we do. If we DON'T interfere with the past, there won't even be a present. This is the end of the goddamn world that could happen before we are even born!

    Second, the Cait Sith(s).
    "When the Harbinger cometh...?"
The Champions of the Dawn shall descend...?"

And then the other one chimes in:
    "Naoi, Naoi!
This is certainly no time to be idly singing prophecies. No time at all!"

They don't seem to be the ones behind all the corruption of the past. But who is the Harbinger?

    Harbinger
    n. One that indicates or foreshadows what is to come; a forerunner.

Hm. Someone who foreshadows what is to come. Perhaps, someone from the future?
So it's probably either the player or Lislette.

So then there's the Champions of Dawn. These could be anybody. The people who end up saving the forces of Altana (Zeid, etc). Or maybe the adventurers from the future who must fight to save the whole of creation.

I honestly don't believe Cait Sith is evil. But I do believe that he made some mistake which let some other force through to muck around in the past, possibly sending it on another tangent that leads to the destruction of the cities. So all he's trying to do is fix it without fucking it up even further. Which is where we come in. We pretty much fall through by accident, probably the same way Lilith or whatever got through to mess around in the past as well. Not wanting anymore outside help, Cait Sith asks to lessen the suffering, and of course, save the world.

And of course I can't remember much more Vana'diel history to speculate further, but that is what I believe to be happening in the storyline so far.[/spoiler:14h39s34]
