Um, no. The difference between 480 to 1080 monumental. The difference between 1080i > 1080p is barely noticeable. I'm even willing to bet that the average joe can't even tell the difference between 1080 and 720. (I sure as fuck can't tell when I'm playing videogames in 720 and 1080.)Originally Posted by Meteora
Even if you could spot "differences", it just means you're looking too hard; no one pays that much attention to detail when it comes to 720 vs 1080. Arguing that you "must have" Blu-Ray when it's only advantage is 108-wai.... nothing? is just stupid.
If anything, future-proof yourself and just buy a dual player.
Not true. Either media type can have VC-1 or AVC streams, and lossless audio with up to 7.1 channels. (I won't even bother mentioning MPEG-2 because of its horrible compression.)Originally Posted by kazen

My advice also.Originally Posted by Deejay
P.S. On paper, HD-DVD looks better for movies. It has a higher bit rate for audio, lossless Dolby TrueHD audio is mandatory, higher progressive frame-rate (30fps vs. 25fps blu-ray). Blu-ray has larger storage, and a faster data transfer rate. Good for games, probably not so good for movies.

I for one have an xbox and PS3, I didnt upgrade the xbox to HD player because the PS3 has bluray, it is VERY nice, and I decided that was the format I would invest in.
At last check, VHS won the old format before because the Porn industry went with them. Porn industry chose to release their content on HD-DVD so....
Actually VHS won the old format because Sony fucked up the BETAMAX standard by being Sony.Originally Posted by Krandor

Didn't blockbuster go with bluray?
FFS can't we just ALL GET ALONG... I hate having to own multiple fucking consoles/machines and multiple cards to different stores to get the shit I want..
Oh shit, this belongs in the other thread heh.
I won't get either and i'll just wait till the next set when there's only 1 format.
Seriously dumb. Imagine bringing a movie to a friends house "Oh I can't put this HD-DVD in your Blue ray oh wells <_>". Meh.
blockbuster has one foot in the grave anyway
Im not even going to read the entire thread and all I shall say is if your buy an HD-DVD player for staying power then you are an idiot. Blu-Ray will be around much longer than HD-DVD because it is in PS3 and because the vast majority of major movie studios (I believe it is 8 vs HD DVDs 2 or something) have exclusive contracts with Blu-Ray. There is a reason that HD-DVD players are cheaper than Blu-Ray and it is because they are trying to stay in the game.
Mark my words,
Blu-Ray = VHS
HD-DVD = Beta
Edit: Also, you could just wait within the next year when they both go down in prices anyways. I did end up reading back and seeing that people mentioned the dual players, which are nice, and also around 1k. The reality is that blu-ray and hd-dvd are both 1080p, and the TVs + legit monster cables that make these movies perform at their highest capacity are expensive. If you want to compromise get an upconvert for like $100 and a nice HDMI cable. It will cost you less and you can use your regular own DVDs in it. Sure its not even close to 1080p but its not 1080p price either. (make sure your tv has HDMI on it, if it doesnt get monster component cables.)

Im pretty sure (sure as in that I recall reading something a long time ago) that it is illegal (licensing issues or something) where 1080p cannot be displayed over component cables. I dunno, just some shit I was reading when I was researching TVs. No matter, I have 3 HDMI's on this new TV and not a single piece of equipment that displays 1080p :D. Come to think of it, the 40gb PS3's don't have HDMI ports do they? So the cheap PS3 solution to a blu ray player actually isn't a solution at all...well, it'll go 1080i I guess, which is close, but cannot get true 1080p over the bargain PS3.Originally Posted by solsovly
EH, I'm pretty sure the 40GB's have HDMI. 1080P can also be displayed over component. It just can't be a long distance and it's more or less the maximum the cables can handle.Originally Posted by Tyche
40 gig PS3's do have HDMI outlets.
No no, It's without a doubt possible to do, but there's a licensing issue with movies that won't allow them to display 1080p over analog.Originally Posted by Vinen

And yeah, I was wrong about the 40gb PS3s.AACS-compliant players must follow guidelines pertaining to outputs over analog connections. This is set by a flag called the Image Constraint Token (ICT), which restricts the resolution for analog outputs to 960×540. Full 1920×1080 resolution is restricted to HDMI outputs with HDCP.
I love how everyone assumes Microsoft wouldn't/couldn't make a Blu-Ray add-on if it really does win the format war. Look what happend to Sony's precious HDMI? I really don't think the general public really cares much about 720p vs. 1080p for Blu Ray to have any real advantage.
Who cares?
Let's wait for Platinum-Ray vs SuperHD-DVDs.
