Blu-ray or HD DVD?

So today in my engineering class my instructor was mentioning that Toshiba will make an announcement to officially end it. I just read the rumor elsewhere that such announcement will be tomorrow at 12 AM PST, let's see what happens.

Still don't care enough to upgrade to a blu ray player. Regular DVD is still just fine to me (and I'm sure the majority of people). $30 for a movie I'd only watch once and be done with is a bit too much. Maybe when I eventually get a PS3 I'll check into some older blu-ray movies, but the jump from DVD -> Blu-Ray just can't compare to the jump from VHS -> DVD.

I have one of those. MS said something recently about being able to support Blu-Ray with an add-on if the public wanted one, so there's always future options I suppose.

When I watch regular DVDs now it's like i'm watching through some blurry filter, it's horrible.

Then again, i've had my HDTV for a year now.. my eyes have been spoiled by HD programming and gaming.

Fuck that. DVD -> Blu-Ray is nothing compared to Blu-Ray -> HVD. Why are we taking small tiny ass steps like this. It does look better, but it's nothing compared to what we have coming in the future.

HVDs will be pure win for one reason (when they get here next century) : it has the storage space to put an entire season of <name of show with 40min episodes> on a single disc in 1080p format.

Nothing bugs me more than buying a 6-DVD season of my favourite show to just have to swap a DVD every four episodes. (hey there House!)


Hell, I'm wondering why they haven't done that with BluRay already; is there a standard that says all BluRay movies *have* to be 1080p? Can't see why they couldn't just slap a whole show series on them at standard 480p.

I'm sure they could do that, but then people wouldn't thing "HD" when you see "Blu-Ray" or some shit. I'm sure there's some awesome psychological reasoning behind it.

Blu-Ray has very stringent quality controls (to protect its brand name) and yes, being HD is one of them. I have to deal with preparing stuff up to Blu-Ray standards at work.

People buy blurays expecting high quality videos, 480p on a bluray isn't exactly it.

And if it's having to swap 6 dvds every 4 episodes in order to watch it in hi-def i'd rather do that then have 1 bluray with 23 episodes of 480p.

The real question here is why you'd sit around watching House for 5 hours straight without getting a drink or snack or going to the bathroom or anything like that.
