PS2 problems, need confirmation about PS3

I went to install my WotG software today but my PS2 wasn't recognizing that I had a disk in there (note: not a disk error). I only use my PS2 for FFXI so I haven't had to have a disk read since ToAU. I'll admit I don't clean it like I should, so it was a bit dusty. So I went out and got a disk meant to clean the lens (Phillips is the brand I believe) but it won't recognize that disk either, or any regular DVD. I think the motor that spins the disks might be dead.

So what I'm asking is....what exactly is wrong? Is it a motor malfunction or has my ps2 bit the dust (it'll still play FFXI fine, just not read any kind of disk.)

I've heard the PS3 can play PS2 disks. I know the older 60GB versions work, does anyone know if the newer 80GB will play FFXI too?

Did you try reading the disc vertical and horizontal? I know it sounds retarded but my 1st PS2 wouldn't read discs laying horizontal.

Also, you can check if it's spinning if you're willing to take the top case off. Take all of the screws out, you'll have to cut the "warranty" sticker on the bottom and make sure you carefully disconnect the ribbon cables.

You'll be able to see the CD then. Put a disc in, power it up and see if it spins. If it is spinning and just not reading, you can manually adjust the spin timing of the drive(it might be off).

You'll see a white "gear" that has teeth on top of the drive. Mark with a sharpie where the needle is and turn it one click at a time clockwise. Try it again. Rinse and repeat for about 5 clicks. If it doesn't help, then your drive is probably dead.
