Word from SE: Don't try and register until Saturday

How can they not anticipate a server load of this magnitude. I would have imagine they have some odd server coding or something. I get my timeouts within 5 seconds or so. That's ridiculous. They should have enabled a way to register via a web interface.

What's funny is, they DID. A few days before they were telling people to register as soon as they had the code, rather than waiting til it goes live. They even told people to set POL to remember your password for logging into the membership section, to take one step out of the process. Putting a direct link on the FFXI screen seems like another way to take some steps out of the process.

Still, I don't get why it's such a problem. They obviously have some weird sort of setup on their servers. How is it that they can handle 2000-3000 people playing a game on 20+ servers without much problem.. but as soon as a few hundred people want to type a 20 digit code in to change a flag on their account, the servers can't handle it?

I phoned tech support a few hours ago asking about this. They said that they were working on it today, reducing other features of the Service & Support section to accomodate those who want to register. As to the validity of what he said, I don't think he lying, but I don't think he knows what's going on either. Said it was the info he received from the tech people.

I just registered without any problems whatsoever.

However, I can't get the fucker to install on my PS3.
Firmware's all updated and everything, but my PS3 resets each time I attempt to install WotG through POL.

Using standalone expansion disc, if that helps.

This is just becoming beyond retarded. Is there no method they can use to make things smoother? Some sort of queue system? Or perhaps an online form of registration. Or could they not have made sure they were prepared for the large majority of their player base attempting to register a new expansion? I remember a few months ago they had a maintenance for hardware upgrades, but i'm guessing that they didn't touch the Registration Server.

This was a totally foreseeable outcome, and how a major company like SE couldn't find a way around it is just astounding. It's not like they couldn't have just got a server capable of handling this amount of traffic, especially as it was 100% foreseeable, and likely to happen in the future for further expansions.

It becomes even more infuriating when they post update notices/tell people over the phone, generally "Yeah, we can't do anything. We suggest you don't even try to play this expansion (who's release was generally delayed and very sloppy) that you purchased, for several days. We're working on the problem, but are so incompetent that even after 48 hours, we have no solution."

I get the feeling that if this were any other major MMO, issues like this would most likely not even happen, or if they did, would have a fairly swift resolution from the company.

did you go thru the content ID heading on the FFXI front page or the direct link? i've been hammering on both for an hour and a half trying to get this abomination registered and am getting nowhere other than the red screen of death every once in a while.

Don't they still have a piss-poor BBB customer service rating? I mean, if your front lines for the customers (ie customer service) is rated horribly, how the hell can you possibly think that their tech support or outright IT department can be trustworthy?

At some point in time, you have to start wondering where our monthly fees are going... must be expensive to hire more and more GMs to say that no one is breaking the rules, I guess.

Why are some people now getting registered immediately with no problems at all? This is such fucking shit. Been trying to register for like 4 hours with no luck, and two people I know just get right on with no problems, first try, like 5 minutes ago. Awesome SE. Just as long as the JPs are all DNC75 by the time I play this it was all worth it.
