The only time an NFL ref will call pass interference without contact is if the DB is "faceguarding" - blocking the receiver's line of sight with his hands to disrupt his ability to catch the ball.

You see this called like 4 times a season. Maybe.

You also see this happen on fly patterns where it's the DB vs. WR. What you're NOT supposed to do is put your hands up while the WR is still locating the ball because it could be underthrown and when the WR stops to turn around the ref will see that you're:

A.) Not playing the ball because your hands are up when it's still not even in your proximity.
B.) You're blocking the receiver from coming back and making the catch.

You will get flagged for this, (not always) but it does happen.

Fade routes are usually caught over the shoulder, correct. But if the ball is underthrown than it is illegal for the DB to just put his hands up and stand there. It's PI. That's the only point I was trying to make.

Blocking a receiver's path to the ball is pass interference. When you don't turn around and keep your hands up you're blocking the receiver from making a path to the ball if it's underthrown.
