I would say that as far as crafting goes more people are sandoria and windhurst because most people use those crafts, woodworking/bonecraft/cooking/cloth/leather are in my opinion probably the most used crafts and I could be wrong but most people house in the nation of their main craft...that do craft.

I could be completely wrong of course, but that's the first thing that jumps into my mind as to why those nations have more people/success
There is no h in windurst.

Aww I think Gustaberg music is wonderful- there is a live performance version that I think I found with the CoP soundtrack.. not sure- but it's beautiful.

Anyways, on my server Bastok really isn't as bad as people try and make it out to be. We're not consistently last- I don't pay too much attention to standings anymore, but it seems all the nations get their chance to shine in first.
Gustaberg music is one of the most beautiful pieces of game music I've ever heard for just being a regular zone/not epic fightscene piece.
Quoted for epic truth. Gustaberg is the only game music that makes me feel sad.

Both San d'Oria and Windurst are responsible in that they did not mettle in things that didn't effect them until much later, that's a big theme in the game. In the same way USA letting World War II go on for so long, in the end, it would have consumed them too.

If it makes Bastokians happy, Bastok goes have the most superior and strongest military force at the moment(outside Jeuno of course). However, they rely greatly on exports.

They have a very small population of players, that's why they lose at these sort of things.
How is it Sandoria and Windurst's fault that Bastok sent a jealous captain along with a galka and the galka-loving broad in the same fucking squad?

Let's not even mention that part where Volker gank killshot off Zeid, Bastok is a country of fucking retard of NPCs, with Zazarg and Cid being the only saving grace.

I mean sure Windurst pissed off a terrestrial avatar and Sandoria fuck around with an object capable of annihilating the entire Vana'Diel...ok they're all fuck ups.

that galka and galka loving broad are central to 2 jobs af story line.. anyways heres another plus for bastock. it basically has a wap from pal. mines to bastock. leveling new characters i spent a lot of time in the fumaroles and dangruf wadi. if your high enough in level oldton mova is a nice shortcut. i remember when i first started playing people used bubbling bernie to make money.

Re: Bastok... Why so consistently bad?

Weekly conquest tallies on Alexander seem to rotate lead a lot. If anything Sandy is slightly lower and Windy wins more often.

I love Bastok. I would cheerfully do the other storylines but I can't because I have all the OPs complete and I don't want to lose them. I know I'd come home to Bastok though.

I started Eld off as a taru in windy, hated being a taru - lasted about 60s. Then I remade her as a Hume which was better but hated the city - found it impossible to navigate. I still dislike running around it.

Sandy I don't mind but the fake bagpipes music drives me insane and the snotty elvaan attitude.
I've considered playing an elvaan female a few times but I'm happy with my hume. We also have Cid, who undestandably will save the world.

    Also, I love Galka.

There are many answers to the question, the biggest reason I heard from most people is that the Items you get from sandy as a reward for spending CP is just beter then what Bastok has to offer. Another reason is because a lot of people want to be on the winning team, so I know a lot of people joined sandy just to be first.

Story Lines from what i remember the story lines were like this:

Bastok story line is about politics and the return of the shadowlord, and the Galkan messenger. (IE Boring)
Windurst Story line: Mostly about fenrir ( a lot more interesting)
Sandoria : A sword called "light hunter"

Basically the story of bastok is a tad boring, and there are a few missions down right impossible for the average player, (that snot in the middle of gustav is ridiculous). So it required a lot of players and you know how hard that can be (I got lucky back then and could go with a JP party doing it) . Another big issue is that Bastok lacks players compared to sandy and windurst and if everyone takes their signey bastok is found to lose.

There is no reward for doing the Expeditionary forces, I done them 3 times and the reward you get for it is generally really poor. And its hard to find motivated people to get them done. So basically in the end its a very variable thing, on odin usually sandy was first with an occasional bastok dominating for 2 weeks and the nwindy taking over the helm. Most people finb bastok boring looking, there is not really much to relate with in bastok its a rocky desolate place. Sandoria has a nice grassland, while Windurst has the disadvantage of being on the opposite contintent. So most people picked Sandy because you could go to bastok easily, and also got better gear and have a beter terrain.

I am Bastokan but I honestly find it ok we are always last because most of the bastok gear is + 20 mp when your not in a n area controlled by you

Why is it every single post you make, regardless of how trivial the topic, unleashes THE FUCKING RAGE with endless cursing?

On topic, Bastok has an overall lower playerbase for a start. It's sort of a downward spiral, people leave Bastok, Bastok starts comming last in things, more people then leave because of that etc etc.

Not that it bothers me, its still my favorite of the three nations with the most interesting NPCs, in my opinion.

Re: Bastok... Why so consistently bad?

IMO, in the earlier days of the game (before OPs, before lots of people had teleport-altep plus escape to short-cut through korroloka, before there was the tele-dem->gusgen-> movalpolos->escape->N.gustaberg short-cut, before the home-city warp taru), the distance from the nearest crag to your home city meant something. I think its safe to say that the time it takes to travel from the dem crag to bastok is greater than the holla/sandy ride or the mea/windy ride. People were doing missions, quests around their hometowns, leveling newbie jobs, etc. A lot was going on in your homecities.

I was actually surprised when I first realized that bastok did so poorly in conquest. On Leviathan, they were not in first place from NA PC release until about 15 months later. I think the fact that SE allowed players to pick their race and start in any home city made a big difference in making bastok so poorly populated.

I think things might have been different if your starting city was actually linked to your race. The newbie ring wasn't a big enough incentive to keep humes in bastok (I don't count galka in the mix since they are rare in comparison).

Once SE released OPs, with bastok in last so often, and having a very hard time getting useful OPs, people just migrated to the other two.

I don't know about other players, but I thought the bastok mission storyline was pretty lousy vs the other two. Again, this isn't something people care about now, but back when sides were chosen, when getting sky access was considered a big achievement, getting rank 10 was also considered a sign of your status. And getting help with windy/sandy missions was by far easier. So switch nations, get your rank 10. And the bastok problem has compounded since.

Oh, and what can you say about such a technologically advanced nation that had a stairway going up the cliff in North Gustaberg in the past, and that magically disappeared in the 20 years since. They made airships, guns...elevators. Install a friggin' elevator there. /sigh

I still much rather have a stairway than an elevator that will take 3 minutes to ascend/descend.

Aaaaaannnnnddddd I muchmuchmuchmuchmuchmuchmuchmuch rather have a stairway than having to zone to south gustaberg to get to any of the two parts of north gustaberg like in the present (whoever thought of this was a huge asshole)

Re: Bastok... Why so consistently bad?

I think a simple way to get conquest to fluctuate a little more across all servers would be to allow the players to keep their OPs when they change nations. I'm dying to be able to do the Bastok and San d'Oria missions but would rather not lose my Gustaberg and Ronfaure OPs. If players were allowed to keep them I'm pretty sure a lot of people with my sentiment would change nations and I'm pretty sure it would help Bastok out. I would even be ok with losing my OPs when I change nations but getting them back when I change back. Much like how I would retain my CP even though I switched nations.

if this gear works in the past then i'm totally stoked! I can use my Rep.Medal just about anywhere now instead of just dynamis >.> lol...

Oh, and I think bastok is last 90% of the time because Volker wears that damned Beetle Armor and Leather Headband. I mean seriously how are we supposed to stand up to San d'Oria with their Knights and their cool armor, or Windurst and their array of BLM,SMN,RNG,THF ; ;. I think that the outpost situation is a whole lot sillier now that Campaign Outposts have been released. In the past you don't even have to do a supply run, you just zone in and you can return at any time- that is crazy awesome. They need to just let people keep outposts when you change nations, otherwise it is pure silliness.

San d'Oria has by far the worse NPCs, they don't even have a saving grace. last March it was decided that Curilla was the best of the dirty elves. that's got to tell you something.

There is a waterfall+river right there. Thats a cheap power source for some elevator/lift system.
